This is like with the one that had AIDS, and all I could think was "so does that mean Sesame Street has sex, or just intravenous drug use?"

If there's anything that can bring the terrorists to their knees screaming for mercy, surely it's the Elmo clan. We should have done this years ago.

Sesame Street Lets Alphabet Play Among the Stars
All Star Alphabet - New Direct-to-Video DVD/VHS from Sony Wonder - Guest Stars Nicole Sullivan and Stephen Colbert and Features Alphabetical Talents of Melissa Etheridge, The Dixie Chicks, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Larry King and 26 Letters!
-- DVD/VHS Presents Fun Ways to Explore the Alphabet and Encourage Children to Look for Letters and Words in their Everyday Environment --

(New York, NY) - September 1, 2005 - Move over A, B and C - letters like I, Y and W get top billing as they star with such celebrities as Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones and Larry King in Sesame Street All Star Alphabet, a new direct-to-video DVD/VHS by Sony Wonder and Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street.

Co-hosted by comedians Stephen Colbert (The Daily Show) and Nicole Sullivan (King of Queens), All Star Alphabet brings fun to phonics in a way that captivates kids and encourages early literacy skills. Starring as costumed letters "A" and "Z", Colbert and Sullivan roam a mall interviewing shoppers and children about the letters they depict. Mall snippets are interspersed between classic Sesame Street footage featuring the neighborhoods' favorite lettermen - Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie and others. Among highlights:

* Norah Jones croons I Don't Know "Y" with Elmo
* Dixie Chicks harmonize No Letter Better Than "B" with Big Bird
* Larry King interviews the letter "W"
* Sheryl Crow and monsters sing "I" Gonna Soak Up the Sun

"Most of my characters are of course not roles my children relate to or appreciate," says Stephen Colbert, who is a father of two and the upcoming star of his own show, The Colbert Report. "But when they heard Dad was playing the letter 'Z' - now that's something to tell all their friends in the sandbox."

Available in DVD and VHS format, All Star Alphabet runs 48 minutes and arrives at retail on September 6. DVD bonus features include: DVD-ROM downloadable Alphabet Matching Game, five classic Sesame Street Alphabet segments, and Kid-Friendly Instant Play, in which the program starts automatically and plays continuously.
"L" is for Life Lessons

"Learning about letters, letter sounds and words fosters early literacy skills that can help children develop language and a lifelong love of reading and writing," says Rosemarie Truglio, Vice President of Research, Sesame Workshop. "All Star Alphabet introduces these concepts in a context relevant and entertaining to preschoolers - as well as parents."

A first-of-its-kind A to Z performance, the video uses a child-friendly formula of music, colors, shapes and Muppets of Sesame Streetâ„¢ to show how letters are embedded in words and how different letters can be put together to create words. Children learn how to identify and name both upper and lowercase letters, and to recognize the unique sounds of each letter.

Sesame Workshop is a nonprofit educational organization making a meaningful difference in children's lives around the world. Founded in 1968, the Workshop changed television forever with the legendary Sesame Street. Today, the Workshop continues to innovate on behalf of children in 120 countries, using its proprietary research methodology to ensure its programs and products are engaging and enriching. These are among many Workshop endeavors recognized for their deep understanding of children's developmental needs and the most effective ways to address them. As a non-profit, Sesame Workshop puts the proceeds it receives from sales of Sesame Street, Dragon Tales and Sagwa products right back into its educational projects for children around the world. Didn't they bump the maximum enlistment age above retirement? Or was it that they bumped the retirement age above the maximum enlistment age?

My dad is not, thankfully, being deployed.

One of my younger brothers, however, is currently undergoing basic training at the US Air Force Academy out in Colorado, but I don't expect he'll be seeing any combat -- at least not anytime soon, if ever.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Friday, 14 July 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

another family military fun fact: this guy was my grandmother's brother.

U.S. Army enlistment age was raised to 42 last month. Feel free to make Volkstrum jokes.

Elmo's dad looks stoned.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Elmo's dad looks like a kiddy fiddler.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm actually more concerned about the fact they cut off Snuffleupagus's head, shrunk it and mounted it on a stick.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, that's a hobby horse. It doesn't resemble Snuffleupagus in the slightest. Seriously, I know this Elmo's dad news is shaking you but don't get crazy now.

"...and then after we beheaded her and shot the rest of the family, we sewed a dog's head onto her body! It was really funny, you shoulda been there."

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Is it me or does Elmo's dad lok too old to be joining up. I'm not as au fait with Sesame Street lore as I used to be but I don't recall Elmo's dad being in the Military.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, Elmo's dad sorta looks like Pete Townshend.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Do muppets have to crewcut their entire body, or just their heads? What is the protocol on that?

Allyzay will never stop making pancakes (allyzay), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm waiting for the "very special Sesame Street" where they learn he was blown to shit by a bomb when a team of Muppet chaplains comes to Elmo's house.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Sesame Street was brought to you today by the number 12...Which is also the number of pieces Elmo's dad was found in.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

And which Service is he in? He doesn't look like a Marine to me.
He's in the USO. That fuck is going all over telling kids that he's going into combat. He's going to do a dance number with Lola Folana and Joey Heatherton.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Dan, I just learned to say that Elmo is black. In my speech therapy course. It's not true, but I'm now able to communicate the thought effectively.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

It's all, "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain" ... "In Hartfordshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen" ... "Did you know Elmo's puppeteer is black?"
