Blair: Is this...? (at this point Blair taps the microphone in front of him and the sound is cut.)

funny, really, but could have lent a little more insight than it does

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Bush: Thanks for [inaudible]; it was awfully thoughtful of you.
Blair: It's a pleasure.
Bush: I know you picked it out yourself.
Blair: Oh, absolutely, in fact [inaudible]

"[inaudible]" is so much better than "the sweater"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 17 July 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's the Colbert / Impersonator thing all over again; what's going unreported is what they said next.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 17 July 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

oh, hilarious!

my favourite:

Blair: What does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine, if we get a solution in Israel and Palestine, Iraq goes in the right way...
Bush: Yeah, yeah, he is sweet
Blair: He is honey. And that's what the whole thing is about. It's the same with Iraq

anyone else grudgingly find this endearing?

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 17 July 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

I cannot wait for the Daily Show tonight.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 17 July 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Bush also offered his thanks to Blair for what was probably a gift for the president's 60th birthday."Thanks for the sweater. Awfully thoughtful of you," Bush said. Then he added mischievously, "I know you picked it out yourself.""Oh, absolutely," Blair declared.

I READ THREAD TOO

"the lie of the land"

Oh and he said "yo", how cute.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 17 July 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

That's not what Al-Jazeera said:

"What about Kofi Annan? I don't like the sequence of it. His attitude is basically ceasefire and everything else happens," said Bush.

"What does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine, if he gets a solution in Israel and Palestine, Iraq goes in the right way, he's done it. That's what this whole things about. It's the same with Iran," added Blair."

So which was it, Iraq or Iran? "He gets a solution" or "we get"?

Momus (Momus), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

I want to hear the tape. I really don't understand what either of them are saying about Kofi Annan.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

it seems to be Dubya complaining about Anan taking credit for things...? I don't really get it either.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

FT version has it as:

BLAIR: Cause I think this is all part of the same thing. What does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine, if he gets a solution in Israel and Palestine, Iraq goes in the right way, he’s done it. That’s what this whole thing’s about. It’s the same with Iran.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what he means by "I think this is all part of the same thing".

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

So "he is sweet... he is honey" is really a way of saying "He wants to take all the credit... he's slick". There's also a menacing undertone: Kofi Annan would take the credit for peace, but they would take the credit for war.

The news this morning had this as "embarrassing for Blair"...

Umm, what "Blair and Bush talk to each other"? Nothing greatly damning.

As Dawn said, they are well aware that they are in a public space, and that lipreaders could work out what they might be saying anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

Of course it would have been better if it had been that bit from "Don't look back" Bob Dylan.

D: "Don' try an SHIT me maaannn"
x: "I'm not shitting you, man"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Yo Blair" as a greeting comes across as a bit demeaning to me. It's alpha male greeting subservient male. I bet Blair doesn't say "Yo Bush".

Revivalist (Revivalist), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

I find it really refreshing to hear these two talking so candidly. I wish that was how they spoke all the time. This somehow makes me like Bush more.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

Revivalist, Blair probably is too Anglo to say YO but British enough to say OI. Innit.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

You're right, but I bet Blair doesn't say "Oi Bush" either!

Revivalist (Revivalist), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

i am going to start saying "he is honey" a lot more

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

Bush's problem with Annan's 'plan' (and this, unbelievably, is the U.S.'s general response) is that Annan wants to secure a ceasefire first, then have Israel and Lebanon negotiate their differences. Bush (and fucking bolton) DO NOT WANT A CEASEFIRE. They want Hezbollah to return the kidnapped soldiers and then maybe start talking about stopping bombing, killing civilians, etc.

gooblar (gooblar), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think the Metro got it right with their cartoon today, Bush saying something like "Yo Blair, pretend we don't know the mic is on and we'll talk about Lebanon like I give a shit."

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

in one ep of 'the west wing' bartlet calls his opponent a nob while a tv camera is rolling, and it all becomes a hoo-hah, and of course he *meant* to do it as a way of sending a message.

it's well-known that no. 10 staffers love 'the west wing', and it wouldn't be the first time a uk pol ripped it off.

just saying.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Channel 4 news was speculating last night that perhaps the russians left it on on purpose. Can never trust those russians.

gooblar (gooblar), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I think it's almost certain the Russians were involved in this

Dadaismus (Are we in love like I think we be?) (Dada), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite part is the thing about "Russia and China are both big countries." Which I don't actually just find to be a stupid comment, it is mostly just evidence of his dismissive attitude towards those countries. If Bush is college fratboy, Vladi is clearly the nerd who dreams of getting back at him.

Yeah, I posted that under "Executive Power Grab" thread, which was off topic, but descriptive.

Okay WTF. Is he on MDMA?

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

Remember when Americans liked to pretend the Soviet diplomats were hopelessly uncouth, evidencing their political and cultural inferiority?
