There went my life. It was nice knowing you.

I now must curse Russia, Brazil, and Indonesia for screwing up my score!

xpost - if you're missing a 0, i curse you

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 22 July 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

someone should make a version of this game for NYC/London, but with commercial establishments/cultural institutions/landmarks/etc, and Manhattan/Central London vs. 5-boroughs/greater london modes

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 22 July 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

also on the advanced game they wanted me to find "Kenai, Hawaii." what next, "Tokyo, Oklahoma"?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 22 July 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

with some caffeine in me, on my 20th game in a row, I hit...

wow. nice one.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 22 July 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

fuck Brazil and Russia! also, fuck trying to play with opponents who leave you hanging on calcutta and message you to say "are you a guy?" and then quit the game. AAAAARRRRGH!!!!! Also, I was neck and neck with this one opponent, and he/she just quit for no reason! I was very shocked when I got Minsk, Belarus on the money.

emilys. (emilys.), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a backwater, non-traveling American and am predictably pretty mediocre at this game.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

australia, why don't i know you better? your shape, perhaps, could be better suited for memorization. brazil, you too. africa, do you really need so many similar sized and shaped countries? philippines, i'm pretty sure i've located a better spot for manila.

and to the people who made the map - oakland is not in the middle of the sf bay. IT IS EXACTLY WHERE I CLICKED!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

australia is easy. everything's on a coast. perth is on the west, adelaide the southeast, etc. and you can disregard most of brazil due to amazonification.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

i know this - but the coasts are long! to my credit i did nail brasilia.

amazonification? you make it sound so dirty - just a jungle doin its thing man.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

oh yes, I always mix up France & Spain just from not bothering to look at what I'm doing. I did that with Russia & China once, too. And Japan & Philippines.

emilys. (emilys.), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Russia and Brazil are total murder!

molly d (mollyd), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

I get America and France mixed up, sometimes

-- (688), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Russia and Brazil are total murder!

Russia is worst. With Brazil, you can at least assume it's coastal.

Tab Hunter loves to take his shirt off (kenan), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

My knowledge of Africa is a crying shame, too, though.

Tab Hunter loves to take his shirt off (kenan), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yay 11949 on Scrambled Europe! (After about twenty tries, though)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

I am absolutely embarrassing on the Advanced World scramble.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

i suck at this

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

On Africa I usually just put it in the middle and pray.

Russia is huge and annoying.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 27 July 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

Playing non-Advanced World, have FINALLY cracked the 7,000 point barrier! (Just barely - 7006) I say Brazil is worse than Russia, if only because there seem to be more cities that they expect you to keep track of. Russia has maybe seven cities, each in a very different location.

Also irksome in terms of shaving off a few points here and there: the Canadian plains provinces - you can clean up okay just clicking in the general area and crossing your fingers, but precision is hard to get when there's just a big empty space and no reference points to keep track of where Regina is vis-a-vis Edmonton.

I've also begun constructing geographical facts and mnemonic devices, many of them based on complete fabrications. For example: Christchurch is in the middle of New Zealand, mirroring the fact that in New Zealand, the Christian church is the center of all public life. In a related vein, Emilys contributed the observation that Mannheim is in the lower half of Germany, just as the band Mannheim Steamroller appeals to the lowbrow listener. Et cetera...

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 28 July 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and here's a fun and educational study aid which also indirectly points out how incomplete the coverage of non-advanced GeoSense is... http://www.lizardpoint.com/fun/geoquiz/

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

"No, that's Tajikistan."

jergins (jergins), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

I've also begun constructing geographical facts and mnemonic devices, many of them based on complete fabrications.

The very best way! I happen to remember the painter Botticelli's years of birth and death through a short Gilliam-type mental animation involving a joint, a Morse key and Venus's foot.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.lizardpoint.com/fun/geoquiz/

Haha the Caribbean game is totally deadly to any confidence in one's own geographical omniscience!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the Caribbean is brutal! After many trial and error sessions, though, I feel way better about Africa, and I finally have all my -stans down!
