Horror flicks when the main characters aren't annoying dumbasses that you want to die painfully

Watching the 2nd ep of the TNT version of Stephen King's Nightmares & Dreamscapes (the Lovecrafty "Crouch End" one), I couldn't wait for both leads to get offed by forces from beyond space & time. Is it just genre requirement or lazy screenwriting that requires any character to either be completely annoying/pathetic, functionally retarded, or a combo of all three?

I recently discovered a film that I've been describing to people as "a serious
drama that happens to have a horror plot" - "Gemini" by Shinya Tsukamoto.
At one level it's a forgotten-evil-twin-brother-murder-torture story, but if you
ignore that, it's a very nicely done historic piece (1910s Japan) with
some intensely complex characters.
