HURT KITTY

My cat Pogo (star of a previous WDYLL thread) managed to claw through the screen on one of our windows and got out on the roof last night. We were out on the fire escape calling for him and he started crying so we found him down on the ground at the side of the building.

He was limping on one of his back legs so we took him to the vet and looks like he has a broken pelvis :(

We've had the screen up on the window for over a year and he's never tried to get out in that time, dunno why he decided to stage a breakout last night. Maybe he's fed up with being on a diet (took him to the vet for his injections a few weeks ago and he's a bit overweight so we've cut out his wet food).

This would be why people get pet insurance, I suppose. £500-600 just to get him sedated and x-rayed.

Oh, poor Pogo :-(

surfer_stone_rosa (surfer_stone_rosa), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Got call from the vet, he hasn't broken his pelvis after all, but what he has done is dislocate his leg really badly, so he has to be operated on tomorrow :(

He's also torn ligaments in his knee, but that might not need operating on, vet doesn't know yet.

Silly boy. Hopefully that will teach him not to go prancing around on roofs in the middle of the night.

(I thought that thread title was a command!)

I hope your kitty feels better soon, most of the time they seem to get over their injuries pretty quickly.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

how weird would it be to be an injured cat that, one day, falls asleep at the vet's office and just wakes up and, whoah, you can walk around again and shit.

the feeling an animal has after surgery has got to be the closest our society has come to magic.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Except if they feel like most people, the IMMEDIATE aftermath is a bit hit-by-truck-ish. Our dog cried a lot when he woke up after neutering, and also after a teeth-cleaning, which is why I resist the vet's endless demands to repeat that last one. ENUF TRAUMA!
So get in there and advocate for pain meds, Colonel!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I don't need to ask for pain meds, they've got him on a drip already, he must be high as a kite right now.

Does anyone know if it's likely I'll be able to pick him up from the vet after his operation or is it normal practice to keep them in for observation? I'm working from home tomorrow so I'd be able to go and get him straight away if I can.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

get well soon, pogo!! =(

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

i imagine they'll keep him for one night if it requires invasive surgery, if not they'll probably release him.

either way you should go visit!!

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

When my dog had surgery (of a totally different variety, but equally serious I think), they kept him for the day (surgery in the morning and we picked him up that afternoon), but I think it was mostly to get the anesthesia out of his system, as they bandaged him up in such a way that he couldn't reinjure himself.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't suppose there's any way your vet would let you take out a cat insurance policy right away, and then let you claim against it for this course of treatment? It might be worth asking (I know someone who did this). Might make it a lot cheaper for you in t'long run.

I hope your cat is better soon. It's horrible seeing an animal suffer.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think our vet is likely to go for that, unfortunately.

I'm hoping they'll just hold him long enough to get over the anaesthetic. The vet is going to phone this evening when they've had more chance to observe and sort out what they're going to do tomorrow so I'll ask then.

Any Britishers know where I can get a decent window screen??? Tried B&Q they didn't have anything. All we have at the moment is some insect netting, which did the job until now, but now we know it's not enough I want to replace it with something a bit more solid. One of the accordian-style ones would be ideal I would think.

Maybe this could be a good business idea - there seems to be almost nothing available in this country, there ought to be a market for it especially with global warming -> more insects etc.

Poor kitty! I hope he feels better soon. And stays off the roof. Sheesh!

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

poor silly pogo

one of my cats had to go in for something minor the involved a general anesthetic and I got to pick her up straight away. she was still very high when she got home and was stumbling about, bumping into things and swaying. it was hilarious.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

When my friend Jesse's cat Brenda Waterbed came home from being spayed and was still under the effects of the anesthesia, she would take two steps and then place her head straight down on the floor as if she were about to do a kitty head stand and stay that way until he knocked her over.

I don't see why any of these sellers wouldn't ship overseas, if you really can't find anything there.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Give Pogo my best, Colonel Poo. I hope he gets well soon.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Vet called and we won't be able to get him til Thursday. Which is probably best really. We have tickets to see Low tomorrow night and thought we wouldn't be able to go, as we wouldn't want to leave him after we'd just got him back home, but if we can't get Pogo til Thurs then we can still go.

Thanks for the sympathy, I'd pass it on to Pogo only he's partying with Pete Doherty right now.

I'll take a look at that link, thanks Beth.

UPDATE:

Pogo is home after his operation. He has to wear a cone on his head because he keeps trying to pull his stitches out but otherwise he's doing good. Bit wobbly obviously but that's probably just the smack.

Unfortunately our other cat Corduroy has decided he liked having the flat to himself and is being rather hostile, hissing and growling at Pogo all the time. Maybe he smells different or something. I expect he'll get used to it after a day or 2 though, he was like this when we first got Pogo last year.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Cats are normally agressive to their peers when they are ill or injured; he will probably adjust as Pogo gets better (if he doesn't settle down straight away anyway).

All the best to Pogo.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Pogo! My ex-flatmate's cat climbed out an open window once (mother came to visit and didnt know we kept the windows shut for this very reason). We couldnt find him for several days... turned out he'd fallen two floors to the driveway and been found by the neighbours curled up and crying. He broke a leg but was otherwise fine.

Funniest part was him having this plaster cast on one leg. The other cat in the house (mine) tried to hassle him, so he held out his plastered leg and baffed her in the face with it! Hilarity.
