Reading Aloud

Okay, I'm rereading "Mason and Dixon" because of the recent announcement of a new book by Big Tom. I find myself enchanted by the language and wanting to read many passages aloud (I read on the bus a lot, as well as in the break area at work, so this isn't really feasible.) I've never done the books-on-tape thing. I think the last time I listened to someone read a book aloud was in elementary school. I kind of want to collaborate on reading some book aloud with some other folks. A chapter apiece, rip the whole thing to a low-ish bitrate mp3, then make it into a torrent and send it out into the intertubes.

Is this totally asinine, or are you with me?

I am totally entranced with this idea.

Is it too ridiculous to suggest The Mahabharata?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno - I've never read The Mahabharata.

I guess it'll depend on what kind of turnout the project attracts.

Although selecting a work in the public domain seems like plain good sense.

Burton's translation of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights probably fits the bill, then.

Less ambitious ideas: Leaves of Grass and Middlemarch.

I kinda like to hear people read aloud. How folks interpret a work goes hand in hand with how it's written.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

Good idea! Although I'm not sure it'll scratch quite the same itch I'm feeling. I'll sure give it some thought though, and there's a big one right here in town.

my gf made me read a short story aloud to her the other day. it felt a bit weird but it was kinda fun.

I like reading aloud, tho I'm always a bit wary of the sound of my voice. Bleak House or something like that'd be fun (having just been watching it on TV).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

My mother (an elementary teacher) would be so proud of this thread.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

What about a readaloud of a radio play, so we could each do parts? Or would the logistics/rights issues be too tricky?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

I once did a radio drama in college to "You Kissed Lilly" by Charles Bukowski. It was kind of bizarre, I haven't listened to it in a couple of years.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

If anyone in the NYC-area wants to start a read aloud club, I'm all for it.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd be for it, I guess.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

this sorta daft idea came to me last night: contrary to coneventional-wisdom scorn for the mouth-breathing folk that move their lips when they read, mightn't you possibly remember more of what you read if you did? (move your lips, that is.) you know, like a sense-muscle memory that'd prop up the content?

literalisp (literalisp), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

I have just composed a local craigslist ad to see if anyone wants to do a read-aloud book club for Mason and Dixon in some local bar.

This means you, ILAustinites!

nancy and i used to read to each other all the time. it's absolutely retarded on some level but also a lotta fun.

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

I find that Faulkner has a much stronger impact on me when I read it alout.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

I think this is an awesome idea. I would totally do this.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

If it's on mp3, though, I don't think it works

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

I would totally do this. Nabokov is also great reading aloud.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

During my misspent youth I did this for an extended period with some friends and it was a lot of fun.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

whasamata with mp3, aside from the lack of camraderie?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's not reading aloud, if you listen to it on mp3.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that would seem to defeat the purpose.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

But maybe I'm misunderstanding the point of that part.

Okay, what do you suggest as an alternative for a bunch of cyber-buds? It was the only thing I could think of.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

Skype! That would be the radness!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry I just said "the radness"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

I meant to say "fresh"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

Just Skype it all up, crazy-style

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Don't you and I have a seven hour time difference or some shit like that?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 27 July 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

Never mind about that

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

You should just set it up, and then people can "Skype into it" or whatever the fuck, whenever it is that you do it?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 July 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

reading aloud is good. last time i did extensive out-loud reading was when i met a guy at a hotel who was reading the same book as me so we took in turns reading one chapter out loud to each other. was fun. the book was geek love.

i'd be in for sure - mp3 is good, for posterity ;-) it's still aloud, just not live. (hey trayce we could have a read aloud FAP)

blind homes here want you to have either BA in Literature or Acting to read out loud for them. i'm sure old ppls homes would not be so fussy though.

miele kitty (miele), Thursday, 27 July 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

ILB decided we all loved doing this, for relationshippy people? An M&D torrent is a very good idea, I would like to listen to it.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 27 July 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
i read aloud last weekend during a 3-hour car trip and it was a hoot! it helps when you've got dorothy parker to read from, i guess.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 August 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I have an intense dislike for being read to for more than a paragraph or so. I enjoy reading so much that I don't like anyone else doing it for me.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 24 August 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

well most people can't do it. that is the major problem.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 August 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

my greatest reading feat was Enid Blyton's 'The Chocolate Cock', to a load of emotionally pumped, impressionable teenagers (all of whom were slightly younger than me). it was exquisitely hilarious for all concerned.

Scourage (Haberdager), Thursday, 24 August 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

?!?!?!
