Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

As you can see, I don't know enough Spanish to understand why the gol was disqualified, making the Brazilians angry.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

OK, instant replay shows a handball.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Thursday, 27 July 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...

so are all the countries sending secon string teams to the copa america? or just the u.s.? should i watch u.s. and argentina on thursday?

mizzell, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I think I will try to watch Mexico-Brazil tonight.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Is that not tomorrow night?

jim, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to watch USA/Argentina, but I bet it's not going to be pretty. I imagine Mexico will send their best players considering Sanchez's job is on the line after losing in the Gold Cup final.

dan m, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

According to my reading of the schedule on Wikipedia the Brazil-Mexico game is tonight.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_Am%C3%A9rica_2007

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Vamos Mexico! That second goal was great.

dan m, Thursday, 28 June 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Was out of town last week but got to see some of today's games. Looking forward to the semifinals and the final and the clasicos therein.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 9 July 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm so pissed off these games are past my bedtime. I started watching the Argentina v Peru game last night before my eyelids started closing and it looked awesome.

Daniel Giraffe, Monday, 9 July 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

Last night I watched the Argentina-Mexico game along with two U-20 games. Argentina looks pretty amazing.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i was hoping argentina would score another just for consistency's sake!

edb, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

MAN that U.S./Argentina game was slaughtertastic!

Abbott, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Argentina looked so dominant I was surprised they didn't score more.

Michael White, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

I am sad Mexico lost to the Argies.

MAN that U.S./Argentina game was slaughtertastic!

The Copa America game? Or did they play each other in the U-20 cup too? I couldn't believe we beat Brazil last week in that one.

dan m, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

but they've slaughtered EVERY opponent in this tournament. they're just so poised and explosive ...

edb, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

predictable final then, but surprised there haven't actually been that many Bra-Arg finals in the tournament in the past. Argentina should win.

blueski, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

The U-20 USA v. Uruguay game last night was a bruiser! The Uruguayans did (do) not play pretty futbol.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Argentina should win.
Yeah, but isn't there one of those rules that Brazil beats Argentina, like France beats Brazil?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I will read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_and_Brazil_football_rivalry to see if I am wrong

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I was talking about the Copa Americano.

Abbott, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

I guess not. I was just thinking of a Copa Americas final a few years back when Bielsa was coach.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

The U-20 USA v. Uruguay game last night was a bruiser! The Uruguayans did (do) not play pretty futbol.

Still, I thought Bradley was going to get a ban in that scuffle after the whistle.

Michael White, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I know! I was thinking post-game red card! I like his "2-1" hand motions towards the Uruguayans. I honestly didn't think they'd win.

I also was amused when one of the long-haired Uruguayans slapped Szetela, and he had a bit of a slow reaction time, in falling to the ground.

Poor Jose Altidore! What happened to him? I haven't looked up the diagnosis of his nasty injury.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Michael White, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

While Michael Bradley, who had scored a beautiful game winning goal, was celebrating with his teammates, Cardaccio ran up to Bradley, spit in his face, tried to slap him, then turned and ran away like the gutless coward he proved himself to be.

Amen to that. Oh, and nice own goal, Cardaccio.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Should I bother to watch the third place game today?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Meh. Watch the U-20 game (USA vs. Austria) instead. It could be a proper whooping. I think it starts soon. I'm stuck at work. Bummer.

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Under 20 US vs. Austria now. The Austrians seem to have Hans Magnus Enzensberger on their team.

Is there another thread for the U20 games?

(xpost)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Is Jose Altidore playing?

Not sure about a U20 thread.

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

(i should stop hijacking this one xpost)

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

No, I think this thread is also serving as the U20 thread and that's fine.

Altidore is not only playing, he scored a goal!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

But Austria just got the equalizer at minute 43.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

OH bummer!

How do they look? I wish very much I could be at my local watching the game. If it sounds promising, I may head over there. Screw work.

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

It was such fun watching them lay waste to Poland in the 2nd half. I would def. be up for that that again (minus the feeling bad for the other team part).

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

oh no!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. I've been getting updates. Bummer!

Did they lose in OT? Or will there be shootouts?

molly mummenschanz, Saturday, 14 July 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

overtime

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 July 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Just turned on Nigeria vs. Chile

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 15 July 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

2 hours later, minute 40 of the next game:
oh noes!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 15 July 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

argentina are seriously blowing this

Porkpie, Sunday, 15 July 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Completely craptacular game from Argentina. The own-goal said it all.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 July 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Tomo y obligo, mándese un trago,
que hoy necesito el recuerdo matar;
sin un amigo lejos del pago
quiero en su pecho mi pena volcar.
Beba conmigo, y si se empaña
de vez en cuando mi voz al cantar,
no es que la llore porque me engaña,
yo sé que un hombre no debe llorar.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 16 July 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

are you sure you aren't mixing him up with Melo as Sandro has never played outside of Brazil?

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Won't be able to watch because of time difference but my Chilean team u de Chile are playing.¡dale león!

Efraqueen Juárez (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, Mexican teams get to play in this and the north American competition?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

^ firestarter

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Ferguson on Chivas/Hernandez

Ferguson praised the contribution of his scouts and of Hernandez's former employers Chivas de Guadalajara in their negotiations for the player, hailing their levels of professionalism for keeping the deal under wraps.

"I think our scouting people deserve 10 out of 10 for identifying him before the World Cup and I think if we had been trying to negotiate after the World Cup it would have been very difficult," said the United boss.

"I think a lot of teams would have been after him and it would probably have cost us two or three times more.

"Our relationship we have built with Chivas has been excellent, they really were very accommodating in everything, the amazing thing was that no-one in the club said a word.

"At Manchester United we find that almost impossible, news always leaks out at our club, but Chivas kept it quiet which was a marvellous asset for us and full marks for their professionalism."

Isn't he really just saying that they lost out on millions?

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

xxp Yes, but if they win Copa Lib I think the second-placing CONMEBOL club still gets the bid to the Club World Cup. It's weird b/c the best Mexican teams don't always end up in the best competitions.

Also:

Vamos Mexico! That second goal was great.

The scorer of this goal now plays for Chicago, hooray! Never would have thought that possible back in 2007.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

Shouldn't MLS sides try to grab a piece of that action?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

It hasn't happened for a variety of reasons. As it is, MLS clubs can barely compete in CONCACAF champions league due to their restricted roster sizes and salary cap. Plus the seasons don't line up very well and the travel would be insane. On top of all that, I'm pretty sure barely anyone would watch it. I think DC United competed in Copa Sudamericana once and didn't do anything, but that's basically it.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Chivas def. Universidad de Chile to get to the final, they face the winner of Internacional/Sao Paulo.

I kind of can't stand Chivas but this is really something.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Hey dan i can't remember if I asked you but do you know much or have you seen much of Sandro for International?

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

weird

Guadalajara entered the tournament in the round of 16 stage after being granted automatic qualification by the South American football confederation (CONMEBOL) after being disqualified from the competition last year due to the swine flu epidemic.

mizzell, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

didn't see the second leg, but thought chivas looked like the better team in the first leg (especially the second half)

mizzell, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Don't know much at all about Sandro, sorry.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

ok we'll find out about him the hard way i guess

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Bump for final second leg tonight.

Aguante Chivas, what the hell.

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

(Inter won the first match in Guadalajara 2-1)

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

What time's it on at? I may have a late night ahead of me, might be a nice thing to keep me company

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

A T D H E dot net says 03:00 CET, dunno what that equals where u are

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

I think that makes it 2am UK time? That can't be right, it's in Brazil and they're only about three hours ahead I thought

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

No, looks like it is - 10pm kickoff locally, plus an extra hour for summer, scuppers my plans

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

You'll have to watch Chicago Fire v. New England Revolution instead. Look for me in the crowd!

Danny Dyer (dan m), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

Congrats Internacional. Sounds like fun. The article is kind of awesome too - he looks like he's gone for the alltime cliché record and he's pulled it off with aplomb. I'm taking notes.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 19 August 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

he article is kind of awesome too - he looks like he's gone for the alltime cliché record and he's pulled it off with aplomb.

Haha wow, you aren't kidding - in ten years google will be able to write exactly like that and it'll be amazing

This final is nuts. Two stupid red cards in the first half of extra time.

sell cigs to kids (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 4 November 2023 22:23 (two years ago)

Kennedy has scored what might be the winner, an absolutely beautiful volley, runs the whole pitch and then goes to celebrate with the crowd, which is a red card offence by their rules.

Then a couple minutes later, Boca have a player sent off for the stupidest of bitch slaps.

15 minutes to go, it’s in bbc3, fluminense 2-1 up
