Any UKers know about tax rebates?

Specifically whether I'm entitled to one and how to go about getting it if I am.

I started a new job in April 2005 and a couple of months ago got a note from payroll saying I'd been on the wrong tax code since I joined — I was paying a flat rate on my whole earnings rather than having the usual system of allowances, bands, rates etc..

One of my collegues reckons I could be a grand down over the course of the year and that HMRC should send me a big fat cheque. But I've no idea how to go about getting one.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I was on the wrong code for over a year and got back... blimey, I don't remember how much it was, but it was certainly a lot. A grand doesn't sound over-estimated. I went to Euston Tower and spoke to one of the advisors there, but I think there are forms you can download.

Your local Inland Revenue office - or whichever office it is that deals with your taxes will want to see your P60 for the period. You should be able to find them in the phone book or online.

There'll probably be a fair bit of faffing about before they get their arses into gear but you'll eventually get your money.

Your works payroll dept should sort it themselves with the tax office when they run your salary through on the new tax code, and your rebate will get paid in a later wage run. Check with them first before faffing about with forms yourself.

one month passes...
Checked my bank balance this morning and found out that HMRC has just paid £1,077 into my account! Woo-hoo!

Excellent! I love it when the government gives you money!

OK, it's your money that they nicked, but still. Free money!

Doubt it — daddy needs a new pair of everything.

For future reference, I called my tax office and they told me to send in my P60 (the original) with a little note explaining what the problem was and what my bank details are.

Five to six working weeks later, KA-CHING! No forms, no fuss.

Usually this means the tax payer is on Emergency Tax Code ie. 'please show me the fucking emergency'. It is easy to sort a scaledown.

Pam's still waiting for her rebate after four months...

She was on the payroll here, but they merrily ignored the P45 she gave them from her last employer (I stupidly handed the whole thing to HR, without detaching the employee copy, and never saw it again) and continued to deduct emergency tax. Her P60 was therefore wrong (no mention of previous employer, wrong tax code). Wrote to HMRC explaining everything (after encouraging phone conversation with them when she decided to register as self-employed) - heard nothing since. Probably worth another call...
