Recommend me a nice place in the country

Right then - myself and some friends have decided to have a weekend in the country in a couple of weeks time. Walking, good pubbage, ideally near a beach if possible. Being metropolitan ponces, we don't really have any idea where, although East Anglia might be nice. Only conditions are:

- Not too far outside London (couple of hours travel max)
- Accessible by rail or coach
- Not in Kent

Where do you recommend?

I once had a week in a place called Tywardreath in Cornwall - it was about 20 minutes walk from a middle of nowhere station, near St Austell, but it was a lovely place and there were loads of pubs and beaches roundabout, but that's about 4 and a bit hours on the train so no good :(

I'd try Suffolk - round Aldeburgh somewhere or even round Maldon in Essex

Suffolk is probably your best bet but transport can be a problem. I'm not sure how close to say Southwold or Aldeburgh, I think Saxmundham and then a taxi is probaby your best bet.

The Isle of Wight. Train to Southampton, ferry to the island. Good transport all over the island by bus, nice pubs, beaches, etc.

We went to Dorset in the end. It was very idyllic, if a bit on the damp side.

This thread was a bit of a dismal failure considering the subject matter, wasn't it?
