Given this and a likely horrid-as-ever batch of nominees (will there be three more 9/11 films by New Years?), it seems like a good year to skip it.

"She just sparkles," Academy President Sid Ganis said. "She is such a pleasure to watch. Her wit cuts to the truth of things, but in a wonderfully warm-spirited way. [That is, screw that vicious Jon Stewart.] I think she'll be a fantastic host for this show, and we're extremely pleased that she's agreed to do it."

horrible. can't imagine a more boring host.

I like Ellen. The zingers may not be as biting as Jon Stewart's or Steve Martin's, but I think she'll keep things amusing.

Python... No Bite :B (flezaffe), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

I don't loathe her, but 'amusing' is not gonna justify 4 deadly hours.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Don't watch it then.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

I am predicting she will wear a pantsuit

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

you heard it here first

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, I don't understand people who are like "waaaah, the Oscars are so loooong." I look forward to the Oscars all year, they better be long.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I usually look forward to them too. except when I know I'm going to want to hit mute everytime the host comes on. ugh.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

At least they've addressed everyone's issue with last year's show: Too edgy.

Don't watch it then.

Did Jack Valenti die and leave jaymc as president of fustiness?

Conspiracy! Spielberg to Stewart: "You'll never tell a Jewish joke in this town again."

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ellen is fine, perfectly funny, but a little benign for my tastes. And John Stewart wasn't near as vicious as Steve Martin was. I thought Russell Crowe was going to jump up and kick his ass.

i like ellen too.

is there anyone with lamer jokes than billy crystal? he hosted how many times? i dont think theyre looking for controversial.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

I hope they include Sven Nykvist in this year's "in memorium" segment.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't aware he died. But yeah, I'm sure they will.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, cinematographers don't get much love. But if your primary clients are Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen, then you do.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

will Anne Heche be in attendance?

AWKWARD

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

lol @ probably cheeky cutaways to anne heche reacting to lesbo humor

gear (gear), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Let's hope that Pat Robertson calls on YHWH to strike down the event as a den of liberalwood homosinuality.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Better if it was cutaways to Queen Latifah and Jodie Foster.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Or Charlie Sheen.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

ellen's new girlfriend is waaaaaaay hotter than heche so she wins

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

I admit to having a soft spot for the Oscars from a number of different perspectives that don't have a lot to do with judging the quality of movies. And even in that sense -- after last year, there's nowhere to go but up.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Guys did you see Anne Heche on Letterman the other night? That shit was funny.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

Is Ellen still with Portia de Rossi?

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I think so! Ellen's a pimp.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

I hope they include Sven Nykvist in this year's "in memorium"

It's a safe bet, given that my jaw hit the floor when they included Bresson and Brakhage in recent years.

Whether Sven is ID'd onscreen as "cinematographer, Sleepless in Seattle" is another question.
