Great story, V1n Di3s3l at his best and incredible animation.

So join me ILX, join me in appreciation of this brilliant film!

no dragon type thing to battle with but cracking stuff that made me nearly-blub all the same. love the end esp.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, when he turned into a weapon I was genuinely terrified! It managed to mix the cute and the unspeakably awful in a seamless manner few childrens' films achieve (search: Watership Down).

No way Watership Down is in the same league, that film is horrific throughout!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

i was gonna say, watership down definitely focuses on the 'unspeakably awful' rather than the 'cute', but they're bunny wabbits ffs! all wabbits are cute (except General Woundwort).

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

the film pissed me off bc it is so infinitely inferior to the book :(

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Thinking about it, Konal, I don't really like the 'second' ending. It takes away from the whole "Souls live forever" thing.

I still welled up though. Gad.

Which one? IG is 'based' on Hughes but they are very different in tone and story (I think, crap I need to read that book again).

Tell that to my sister who was viciously attacked by one. She still curses it!

"This is like coffeeZILLA."

One of the greatest films ever made.

yeh, ted hughes, the iron man. i LOVED this book as a kid - i remember when i first got it it took me several goes to read it as i couldn't get past the delicious delicious FEAR and WRONGNESS i got when the hand and eyeball are crawling around putting him back together, then the rest of it was just... woah. the film - i didn't know they'd made it, saw it in the listings and then i was looking forward to seeing it and ugh ick ew i just remember thinking why'd they make it so schmaltzy? maybe more to it too, i dunno, it reminds me of how i feel abt disney-pooh as compared to milne-pooh, like they just took all the awesomeness out. i think i switched off a couple of times bc it made me really angry, but i ended up watching most of it anyway. i grew up w loads of ted hughes stuff around though.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but voice of Vin Diesel = ROWWRRRR

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

It is a lot less dark than Hughes IIRC so I can see how it would appear schmaltzy. I don't think it is though, except the 'second' ending of course (by which I mean SPOILER after he gets blown up) which doesn't help my argument at all, I think it manages to tick all the boxes (amnesia, weapon, love, pacifism, humour, rebuilding self) that I would want from the Iron Man story.

I agree with you about Pooh though, new pooh isn't even a teddy anymore, he's just a cartoon bear :(

"This is like coffeeZILLA."

You wouldn't believe how many times I found you saying that when I searched "Iron Giant"!

This movie makes me cry every time I watch it. So, so good. I love the parody of it in Futurama's "Anatomy of Interest" bit w/the 500-foot Bender.

If you think Watership Down is depressing, download the cartoon of Plague Dogs by the same people. I don't think it ever got released because it was too disturbing.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

It got released somehow (which is how Skinny Puppy got a hold of it for a video of theirs).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Supposedly there are two versions of Plague Dogs - an edited US 82 minute one and the international 99 minute one.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Kv_nol, of interest perhaps: IRON GIANT

This movie made me believe in Superman.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Watership Down managed to make an Art Garfunkel song super disturbing! One called "Bright Eyes" no less!

Only 8,000 copies were released as first-run VHS.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Dean has a poster of Jack Kerouac and a record labelled something like 'jazz record'---nice beatnik signifiers. I have a huge crush on his as a cartoon character even tho he is voiced by the Chronick Jr.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god I just watched that Skinny Puppy video. There goes the rest of my day.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Recently re-watched this movie--sooo great. Saw it in the theater with my young cousins when it came out and one of them (don't remember which) was BAWLING at the end.

I DONT THINKED GIANTS SHOULD BE TOO TALL. I WOULDNT CRY IF A TALL GIANT DIED. I LIKE MIDGETS INSTEAD OF GIANTS. I COULD CRY IF A MIDGET DIED. BUT IF A MIDGET AND A TALL GIANT DIED AT THE SAME TIME. I DONT KNOW WHAT ID DO.

So glad I'm not alone in the whole blubbing thing. Was slagged unmercifully last night when I admitted to being choked up! I have feelings dammit!

There is no way in hell I'm looking up either Plague Dogs or Skinny Puppy if the reactions on this thread are anything to go by!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure I've gone on record with my love somewhere around this place. So, yes.

Didn't this film's box-office disaster close WB's animated feature unit?

How old were they Ian? My sensitive 5 year old wants to see this.
