Beaning? I've been saying it wrong all these years...

Fucking sick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Even though it turned out my son wasn't autistic, I still have this weird defensiveness of autistic children. I want to find this guy and pay like Darryl Strawberry or someone* $25 to bean HIM.

Mr. Downs stared at the jurors and showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. Family members who sat in the front row of the gallery were equally expressionless.

They were too busy planning some jury beanings.

"This is Americana, where it is 1, 2, 3 strikes and you're out at the old ball game," said Mrs. Vernon.

As an Americanaian, I totally agree with her.

To paraphrase Clausewitz, sport is the continuation of culture by other means.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

i laughed a little when i read that the defendant's surname was Downs. does that make me a horrible person?

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

yeah basically!!

roffle tho.

geoff (gcannon), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

This is a fascinating situation from an ethical standpoint, mostly because I want to know if the kid who did the beaning still got into trouble for fucking up his teammate.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the "coach told me to do it!" excuse sounds a little suspect, but I guess there was probably more evidence than that for him to be convicted.

does the nuremberg defense fly with 8-year-olds?

does the nuremberg defense fly with 8-year-olds?

Yes. It does. Quite correctly, too. 8-year-olds are expected to take direction from adults. Adults are considered responsible for the 8-year-olds in their care and under their guidance. If an 8-year-old resists an adult's orders in this situation, it is fortunate and praiseworthy, but not expected.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

I think if anything, children are expected to follow orders.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, wait, I'm still unclear: was he just being a repugnant butthole, or did he have a strategic coaching objective, like trying to injure the autistic kid so he could bench him?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

both, most likely

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Gym/Phys Ed teacher in sadist cunt shockah.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

It creeps me out that the coach didn't just tell the kid to do it, he offered to PAY HIM $25 to do it.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, $25 dollars is an near-unfathomable fortune to an 8 year old.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Am I alone in thinking that this was a jape gone horribly wrong? That the guy wasn't being entirely serious in his demand? That's how it strikes me. Ah well, the law will out, I suppose.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

He was totally serious. IIRC, league rules were that all the kids had to have some playing time, so Coach Butthole was trying to get around that.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Since the coach told the kid to hit him again, harder, I'd say no, he was serious.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if that's true, he deserves all the pastings he's gotten here.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

... knock... some sense... (if you complete this gestalt, blame yourself)

IPSISSIMUS (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure he was serious, but let's say you were right. Is joking about beating up on the disabled kid a good idea?

No Suntan, No Credibility (noodle vague), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's not, and I didn't condone his actions. I just thought that he may not have intended to injure the child. He's still a cock whatever his intention, just a bigger one if the law has spoken truly.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Too much of an asshole to be allowed to coach children, and I hope he never has any of his own. No matter his intentions, it was reprehensible to voice that kind of shit to a disabled kid's teammates.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

I agree that it is unreasonable to expect an 8-year-old to go against his coach's commands but at the same time not giving any type of punishment to this kid teaches him that it's okay to horrible stuff to someone else as long as someone in authority tells you to do it; last time I looked, we weren't treating our kids like soldiers.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

We weren't?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Um...

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Umm yeah but Dan, surely the kid's involvement in this whole thing, plus whatever sit-downs his parents have had with him about the whole thing, are plenty to remind him about the right and wrong of it all? I mean, what, are you saying the kid should be charged with something, too?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

What would you do to punish him Dan? I'd say he should apologize to the kid and his parents, and offer to help the kid with his baseball skills. But he doesn't need an ass-whupping or anything along those lines for his actions, nor does he need to be humiliated publicly in front of his team mates, nor banned from playing baseball.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oh for fuck's sake, people.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

I also think that whole team and all the parents should watch the video of the autistic kid who was the team manager making all those basketball shots.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I think the kid should be prosecuted by the authorities as opposed to something like grounded by his parents because that makes sense.

Is it Reactionary Idiot Day today?

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Grounding is the most senseless punishment ever invented.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

It ruins the shock.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Facilitates it, actually - "Here, you're grounded. Now hold this live wire."

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

first pandas, now punishment. nothing can escape the icy tendrils of electrification today, it seems.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

* insert Abu Ghraib mock up with panda here *

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

These days grounding means being forced to sit on the computer in your bedroom. He'll probably find this page and defraud our credit cards
