Anything that involves taking the person's surname and sticking "Y" on the end of it, footballer style.

And anything that someone says is their nickname (eg: Paul "call me the guv'nor" Ince). A nickname is bestowed upon you by your peers, not chosen by yourself.

What about good nicknames?

There's a football phone-in show on Radio Scotland and every so often they ask people to phone in with their pals' nicknames. Some classics:

Krakatoa: because he sits dormant surrounded by piles of ash
Neon: because he's a six-foot tube*
Thrombosis: because he's a slow-moving clot
Drill: because he's a boring tool

etc etc. Much better than "the Donald" anyway.

*tube being a classic Scottish insult for an idiot

People I have known

Ariston: because he goes on and on and on.
Thrush: because he's an irritable cunt.

Ben Dot (1977), Friday, 22 September 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

yay! More of these please! (I might nick those and try to pass them off as my own next time they do that phone-in again on Off The Ball, though the thrush one might get me in some trouble)

I was always amused by "Refrigerator" Perry. Whatever happened to him?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 23 September 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

I know someone who's nickname is apparently "Africa". I really have no idea why, he's a white indie dude.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 23 September 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

I remember watching a broadcast from Wimbledon or the U.S. Open one year, in which Bud Collins complained that the nickname people were using for Andy Roddick, "A-Rod", already belonged to Alex Rodriguez. Bud decided it was time to give Roddick a new nickname, and -- blissfully unaware of the homoerotic implications -- summarily christened him:

"Ramrod".

(It didn't catch on.)
