I have to admit I find this a bit perplexing, somehow.

ha ha this 'quote' from that page:
"Football is for everyone. Get into the Homeless World Cup. I do"
Rio Ferdinand

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

My mind boggled upon reading that. I suppose it's a great idea and all but the idea of taking homeless people, organizing them in teams and sponsoring them to play other homeless people in South Africa seems fantastical, somehow.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

i know what you mean. there's a sense that it trivialises and exploits their position isn't there? the idea that after this they go back to being homeless isn't satisfying obv.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

There's a set of Panini Homeless World Cup 2006 stickers, with no book to stick them in.

(Sorry).

"Football's Not Coming Home" etc

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Football's got no home", surely?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

I'm trying to resist the temptation to be curmudgeonly, but the whole thing seems almost cruel.

"Football's (be)Coming Home(less)"

Oh come on, it's not Bumfights or anything like that. It seems good-intentioned to me.

Why is it cruel? I'm presuming during their time in South Africa the players are being fed, clothed and sheltered. And certainly having a better time of it than they would be on the streets in their respective countries. And I suspect they get some sort of contribution at the end of it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been to South Africa!

Am I Re-elected Yet? (Dada), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Matt and Alex, I agree and concur. I just wonder what these people will feel like after all the hoopla has settled down and they're back in their respecive countries and still homeless. Ferdinand's transfer fee to United alone could house very single participant for life. I'm sure it's all for the good but it seems strange, somehow.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

me neither

two years pass...

If someone can please explain to me WHY I'll be very appreciative.

Okay that wasn't meant to post, but now that it's here this year and posters are everywhere and I STILL can't get a cogent explanation of the benefit to homelesses perhaps someone here is able to enlighten me.

Getting hassled for change even more than usual as well.

Maybe they'll gain confidence and lay off the goon bags?

Does this make money? Where do the proceeds go?

usual benefits of taking part in sport, i'd imagine - fitness, teamwork, sense of belonging, self-discipline. uses football "as a trigger to inspire and energise people who are homeless to change their own lives", sez 'ere.

fela cooties (haitch), Thursday, 4 December 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

a friend from work is helping shepherd the portugese team around the city while they're here, she's really enjoying it.

fela cooties (haitch), Thursday, 4 December 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

I get what it's doing for the participants, but it's a serious expense for so few people isn't it?

Brunswicki and Footescray (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

(obviously I am naive, hence all the questions)

Brunswicki and Footescray (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's more like the 'flagship' event - gets media attention, acts as lightning rod for fundraising, etc. there's like a second tier of local programs spread through the countries taking part that probably have more of a direct social impact.

fela cooties (haitch), Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

Ahhhhhhhhhh. Thanks.

Brunswicki and Footescray (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

Not as useful for raising homeless awarenessness as Bumfights.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 4 December 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

The impact is consistently significant year on year with 73% of players changing their lives for the better by coming off drugs and alcohol, moving into jobs, education, homes, training, reuniting with families and even going on to become players and coaches for pro or semi-pro football teams.
