Great defunct daytime TV programmes

15 To 1 God, me and my housemates used to be addicted to this when I was a student. The questions were pitched at exactly the right level, easier than University Challenge and harder than The Weakest Link. William G is the man.

Watercolour Challenge Possibly the most tranquil show in the history of television. Great for watching Hannah Gordon try and think of something nice to say about a hideous piece of crap someone's just painted: "Gosh, it's nice and busy!"

You'll find 15 to 1 repeated on Challenge TV.

Just remember that she murdered Victor Meldrew... :O

I miss TV-am with their swamped-in-Laura-Ashley set and general never-resolved tackyness. GMTV is far far too slick in comparison. I was never old enough to watch it while stoned/hungover, but I'm sure it would have been quite an experience... particularly the Rustie Lee sections.

JTS (JTS), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I once beat the bloke who got the perfect score on 15 to 1 in a pub quiz. This is the greatest achievement of my life, and reminds me of why I need to get out more.

My mum sat next to Hannah Gordon at my graduation ceremony.

I think that's it for the tenuous connections to daytime telly, except that I used to go to school with someone who presents bad daytime telly that I've never seen.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

er i've been on Brainteaser. There was a thread on here about it. Is it defunct?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Still going. Did you have the fit woman or the annoying bloke?

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I remember when you were on Brainteaser, Mark. One for the "people off Sinister being on telly quiz progs" file.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Sam has posted on here too. Not much tho.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

I remember getting a 30min break from work specially to watch Sam on 15 to 1.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that was one of the others. Also Liz on University Challenge.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Naomi was on Chain Letters and 100%. I must know 4 or 5 people who've done 15 to 1.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Me = mercenary little git, wasn't really interested in doing 15 to 1 cos there was no cash to be won.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, you were on that Julian Clary lottery thingie too.

I think we should put an ILX team on Eggheads and kick their smug know-it-all arses.

(that's why I didn't do 15 to 1 either, kudos don't pay the overdraft off)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

just remembered that RickyT was on University Challenge too.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Going for Gold had its moments. Henry Kelly saying "why don't you come too" as he walked, or rather marched from one side of the studio to the other for the second part of the programme. AS IF WE HAD ANY CHOICE.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to go on Eggheads, actually.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to go on to punch that CJ guy in the head. Seriously, we should put a team on from here.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Those Eggheads literally make my skin crawl. I can't watch them. The only prize-free show I've ever wanted to do was University Challenge

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

I went off on one last week about them last week in the pub, but that CJ bloke is a whole world of extra-creepiness and smugness.

It's the way that if he knows something he's all "oh, this is so simple, I can't believe you peasants are making me answer something so insulting to my superior intelligence", and if he doesn't, he dismisses the subject as something far far beneath a genius such as him.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wow, he's got a website! http://www.demooi.co.uk/

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

I was partial to a bit of Wipeout.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 30 September 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Wipeout was good, yes.

Obviously the king of excellent daytime telly was Blockbusters. Me and another lassie from school wanted to go on it, and our school wouldn't let us!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 30 September 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Does Blockbusters count? It was more children's telly, I always thought. But clearly great.

My ex-husband was on 15 to 1 as well. He won his programme, and narrowly missed getting into the grand final. Oh well.

I loved the Big Breakfast when Johnny Vaughan presented it. Especially the shed bits. I always thought it was slightly sad that they made so many attempts to recreate the shambolic spontaneity of it on evening telly, failing completely, because of course the reason that people were so forgiving of it was because they knew everyone involved had been up since 3.30am.

This is the perfect description of OTT's failure to achieve success. Also most 10 year-olds not allowed to stay up that late on a Saturday.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Sunday, 1 October 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

Five To Eleven - on at 10.55 a.m. during the late 1980's with various resting thespians doing poetry/prose readings to camera e.g. Alan Bennett, Richard Briers, Nicola Pagett, Martin Jarvis, Annette Crosbie, Patricia Routledge etc.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

And then there was Crown Court, and let's not forget the glut of Australian soaps on in the afternoon e.g. Sons And Daughters, The Young Doctors, The Flying Doctors, The Sullivans, Richmond Hill, A Country Practice, Shortland Street.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 1 October 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, if you lived in Ireland, you wouldn't have to remember Shortland St. It's still on here.

God, the Sullivans was great. I always skipped over it, until one time when my Mam was at home sick for a few days, and she watched it, and then we got into the habit of both watching it. A top programme.

And Crown Court, with its Janacek theme music! Classic.

My So-called Life

eh (fandango), Monday, 2 October 2006 07:25 (nineteen years ago)

There used to be a fantastic children's progranmme on BBC called "Come Outside", with Lynda Baron playing some dotty old lady with a cute little dog called Pippin. They went everywhere by cartoon aeroplane, and used to take trips to see how street lights were made, and stuff like that. I loved that programme so much.

C J (C J), Monday, 2 October 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

If you're talking children's telly, I've been thinking about Pidgeon St a lot lately.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 2 October 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

'Come Outside' is still on regularly. It's a great favourite of my 4 yr old son.

bham (bham), Monday, 2 October 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's still on???! I didn't realize. Having a job really cuts into my daytime TV viewing.

C J (C J), Monday, 2 October 2006 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

15 to 1 is the king of quiz shows for purists like me, I didn't realise it wasn't on proper telly any more :(
My ex was on it once and did quite well.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 2 October 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

xp
And Crown Court, with its Janacek theme music! Classic."

I can't be the only one whose mind boggled in the direction of

"Earlier for interest I had a wine bottle
Weird death monsters approached and I admitted them
As they filed past into my house
Not the bedroom where others were
They danced in the living room
Extremely macabre and death-like moves
Others saw them and sometime later expressed horror as they left
Or escaped
WELCOME TO CROWN COURT!"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 October 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

First Class was more a teatime show wasn't it?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 2 October 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

I remember First Class being on around lunchtime-ish when I was at Primary. Or am I thinking of the one Coia presented with ver School kids?

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

First Class as I remember it was always on after CBBC at teatime, before the six news. I watched it purely to see them playing Paperboy and archery on Hypersports. Saddo that I was.

i wish c4 would start showing Cheers again at lunchtimes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

ooof! Five's Company, in the early days of Channel 5, TV nobodies lounging around on garish couches with what looked like the tattered remains of an Aspel set. Good to watch just to see how many times Esther McVey could mess up her lines.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

What was that C5 quiz show with a hundred contestants hosted by Tim Vine?

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)
