Just saw it for the first time.

One question: why have I never heard anyone mention that there is a rape scene in this movie?

Just found this in a Spike interview:

What's your biggest regret?

My biggest regret, as far as cinema goes, is the rape scene in She's Gotta Have It. It was stupid. I mean, it makes light of rape.

the scene isnt really treated like rape in the film. jamie or nola dont even seem to acknowledge it as such. not saying that to excuse it of course, but yeah, like spike says, it makes light of rape.

brilliant film though. maybe my most favourite spike lee film. it was before he became so didactic.

Nola explicitly refers to it as rape like 5 minutes later, when she says she wants to become celibate.

(Also: this movie is now 20 years old!)

i dont remember her referring to it as rape. if she does though, well she is very forgiving. i wonder what happened to the actress that played nola darling.

i think there was a book about shes gotta have it that came out earlier this year. or at least the excerpt i read in time out was about the film (the book was probably about spikes films in general).

"why have I never heard anyone mention that there is a rape scene in this movie?"

it's reverse rapism.

I think the book is called Spike Lee's Gotta Have It: something about guerilla filmmaking

great film, nice to see him make something so loose and unencumbered before working with the Big Ideas.

Right on, though speaking of Big Ideas -- I think his other film it most reminds me of is Do The Right Thing.

yep, def. closest to Do The Right Thing - pretty good movie, watched it again a year or so ago.

also Spike does a good job of being pretty funny himself in the movie

He's great in it!

Ever seen any of the Mars Blackmon Nike ads from that era?

How could we not? They were everywhere.

I was too young to remember!

Last week I was created a snide photo riposte to a friend's email, for which I needed a Mars pic. I was sorta amazed how relatively few google images there were of him. Fading into history, is he?

Of course, when I tried to do the same using Robert Conrad with a battery on his shoulder, I found only one photo. I was surprised there was even one.
