I had no idea she was still alive! This is completely shocking.

Her send-up of the Ring cycle rules. I also thought she was long departed. I would love to have heard her take on American Idol, and now really must find a copy of her autobiography.

Agreed on both parts. I used to listen to the Washington-area classical music station on April Fools Day, when they would play her take on the Ring cycle.

I was a bit surprised that my mother hadn't heard of her. Or that, unless there's an ILM thread that's taking all the traffic away from this one, so many ILXors haven't. (Surely Ned knows and loves Anna Russell!?)

The "How to write your own Gilbert and Sullivan Opera" bit is also completely classic, especially when she sings the quartet.

The first I heard her was at an all-ages music camp in Launceston, Tasmania, in 2000. The two guys presenting a lecture on Wagner had us all listen to her Ring, while they recuperated from hangovers in the back of the classroom. I bought all her CDs I could find when I got back home.

Her take on Wagner is some of the funniest stuff I ever heard! Certainly deserving of making it to 94. Very Spike Jonesy lady. RIP.
