Astounding moments in regional journalism AKA "The Local Newspaper Insanity Thread"

Am not quite sure what to make of this, it's obviously great, but a little random. The front page (and the whole paper) is usually quite boring and ordinary, I wonder what made them go so overboard on what should be quite a serious story.
Mostly unrelated, but i remember a few years ago they got into a bit of trouble for printing a picture of a local football team where one of the players had his willy out. And for a while it seemed that every single 'letter to the editor' they printed was about the same thing (the redesign of a road junction).
Insanity? or just another inevitable symptom of small town life?
