Weird Al and Carrot Top disturb the shit out of me when I look at them. Weird Al has his creepy hair and then some molester facial hair and bugged out eyes and then Carrot Top has his make up and strange female hair and thenout of place large muscles.

Alright, I just thought I would share that with you...

when i was a lad, it was loni anderson. even tho i'm straight, and she was "objectively" sexy, she seemed sooooo fake to me, with that helmety, dye-job hairdo, she really grossed me out. jessica simpson is the modern equivalent, 95% of the pix i see of her are just repulsive.

I'm there with ya on Jessica Simpson timmy, and you can add Paris and Britney into the mix. Pop tarts with too much frosting and no filling, all.

As for Loni Anderson, yeah I can see the comparison of the physical attributes (which is what the thread is all about), but she did a great job as Jennifer Marlowe; much better than the any of the pop tarts could do IMO. Like I said though, the thread isn't about their abilities (or lack thereof) just their appearance, so I'm not even sure why i brought up the distinction!

His bland soft air-brushed looks and his animated manner -- like his body is warring between two contradictory impulses, camp and cockiness -- are just beguilingly creepy to me. It's like he's spent every waking hour of his life in front of a TV camera, he's that overdetermined.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

He wants desperately to look like his target customer (the casually flawless college kid), and in that pursuit he has aggressively transformed himself from a classically handsome man into a cartoonish physical specimen: dyed hair, perfectly white teeth, golden tan, bulging biceps, wrinkle-free face, and big, Angelina Jolie lips.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

I am trying to put my finger on why even fairly ordinary levels of cosmetic plastic surgery unnerves me so much: perhaps it's not really the way people look so much as I just seem to believe you have to be extraordinarily self-deceived to think it's unnoticeable.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

(For the record, I've had cosmetic surgery of a minor sort. I've had lasers pointed at face three or four times to ameliorate a rosacea problem. Painful as fuck, no anesthesia, and it left my face looking like I had huge oozing purple pimples for two weeks each time.)

am0n (am0n), Monday, 23 October 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

re jackie mason's horribleness: i don't forgive his bigotry, but i understand where it comes from. he's not the only person with that mentality from his particular age group and religious/ethnic background. sadly, it's typical of old, conservative, israel-loyalist jews.

i don't think he's especially horrible-looking, though. he has that frizzy-haired, bushy-eyebrowed eastern-european thing that a lot of anglo-ish americans find off-putting, but whatever.

cocksure triumphalism at its most vacant (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 23 October 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

The picture posted above is a bit misleading, actually: what's most disturbing about his look, in person, is the contrast behind his skin tone and his hair.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 23 October 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

That Abercrombie guy argh! It is curious: his face doesnt seem like it *should* be creepy. You look at it in a more clinical way and you think "well he has all the bits in place". But our brain knows what a normal, slightly irregular, asymmetrical human face is meant to look like. When you pull a that guy, or Jocelyn Wildensteen, and mess with the planes and symmetry and proportions of your face, you're going to look ALIEN - even if in theory you've just given yourself the perfect chin, nose, teeth, cheekbones etc.

Perfection isn't beautiful, it is robotic. Dude looks like he's done in 3D or something.

There's a phrase for realism that is unnerving like this in 3d art: what is it, the unreal valley, or something odd?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 23 October 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

abercrombie dude doesn't REALLY bother me THAT much, though! he is creepy in that he's sixty-something trying to look twenty-something, i concede that. but there are plenty of aging boomers who also can't let go of the ghost of their youth either. he isn't as reptilian as, again, karl lagerfeld.

I think my problem with the Abercrombie & Fitch guy is this: from that distance he looks perfect, very much in the Uncanny Valley sense -- "perfect" in that he actually looks exactly like a beefy blond frat boy in his early 20s, has actually surgically transformed himself (on the level of appearance, anyway, which is of course an entirely real sense) into someone -- a rather cartoonish-looking person, but a credible-looking person -- 40 years younger than his actual age; he's not at all a Jocelyn Wildenstein-type disaster; the desired result has been achieved, or so it seems from that photo. But the photo isn't a close-up, so you imagine the subtle strangenesses that must exist in his facial structure, skin texture, etc ... or, worse, that don't exist.

(Sorry, mildly impaired. Cheers.)

Lagerfeld looks crazy as fuck—everytime I see a picture of him I want to shout "Mugatu!"

But you do have to hand it to him, as his own fashion is kind of timeless. I can't tell from the picture posted above whether it was taken in 2006, 1996, or 1986.
