playing subtitled avi files

I've been trying for an hour to do this. I even went so far as to download a new media player that claims to do it. It didn't. Is there an easy way to watch a downloaded movie on my computer and read the dialog onscreen? I'm ready to shove a brick up the ass of some of these code gurus who can't write clear instructions.

Try VLC, then look under menu item Video. You can activate the subtitles track there.

That's not even playing the video right.

Okay. I dled "Infernal Affairs." It's in a folder with an srt file, which I think contains the subtitles. I tried WMP, and switching on the subtitle from the pulldown menus. No dice.

I already had divx player. I dled a plugin called divx subtitle displayer. No dice (and the video was terribly choppy.)

I tried VLC and instead of the video (audio appeared fine) got a vertically striped display almost like an old fashioned color bar test pattern, only with some movement on the left.

I'm not sure what other details I can offer.

I use DirectVobSub with WMP and it works for me. Just make sure the .avi and .srt files are in the same folder and have the same name.

nevermind. slugbuggy's solution was getting me subs, but has resulted in herkyjerk playback so arg. Then I rebooted and it's silky smoove. Thanks to you all, but esp. sluggo.

Glad to help. I went through the same deal with other players and nothing worked for me either.

I've had success with a program called BSPlayer.
