Gay New York City Help pls!

My boyfriend and I are going to NYC for a week or so on holiday in early Nov and are begging for hints/tips - esp about the gay scene (we like pop/rock/indie more than techno techno techno. We've heard of the Metropolitan - anywhere else that we might like?), mens clothes shopping (esp carharrt, nice t shirts, trainers etc and so on) and general eating and drinking tips

many thanks!

The Phoenix bar on East 13th St has a super jukebox, tho I find it uncomfortably crowded most weekends. There's a new BEAR bar opening this week, also in the East Village, called Big Lug (generally a friendly crowd, one wd hope).

I'm straining to recommend anything else, I'm more disenchanted with Gay New York than I've ever been.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks anyway! Know what you mean re disenchantment - we get jaded with gay london but at least we'll have the novelty factor of visiting somewhere new in NYC

Mark Co (Markco), Monday, 23 October 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Try a few places that aren't gay while you're there.

of course we'll do non-gay things too. I know lots of straight and lesbian friends who have been who are recomending stuff to us, just no gay boy friends...

Mark Co (Markco), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

big lug? that sounds awesome. let's go.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

dude, you'd hafta beat em off with a stick there.

Nearly all my fave places to hang out w/ gay ppl are technically 'mixed.'

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

(not beat em off literally i dint mean)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

not unless i get paid, heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

recommendations of mixed places = cool too. most places in the UK are v mixed compared to the states I think anyway

Mark Co (Markco), Monday, 23 October 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Big Lug had been around for a year or two. Not that I ever had any first-hand experience, mind.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait...I know there was a party/event/night-style thing called "Big Lug," so I guess it now has its own dedicated bar. Cool.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

I have been reduced to a state of near-complete ignorance over the NYC gay "scene" so I will be taking notes if this thread winds up being worth a damn.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 23 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

yes, Big Lug usta be at Nowhere -- Phoenix' sister bar -- where some bitchboy bartender unplugged the juke on me after I played "Fairytale of New York."

I take it we're leaving off venues where one primarily tries to get laid.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

metropolitan seconded. too bad you're not going in the summer, their sunday bbq was fun the one time i went.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

yes, we are not looking to go on the pull, tho we don't mind places with backrooms or whatever as long as they are cool in other ways too

Mark Co (Markco), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

Every time I see the title of this thread I think of a drag king Statue of Liberty being mugged. This is not a good thing.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

It would be a good thing if it was being mugged by a GIANT ROBOT or a GORILLA or something

Mark Co (Markco), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

Metropolitan's new-wave night usually features some ridiculous late '70s/'80s films being played on the TV (mute) like Eyes of Laura Mars or CHUD. Next two are November 4 & 18.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

we will be there for the 4th!

Mark Co (Markco), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

oh, if you like records, there'll be this (all over the Kinsey scale):

Is Pyramid worth a try?

I guess the Cock is no more?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

re FTONY, it was October.

The Cock has moved to lower Second Ave -- I think it's still there -- but I wouldn't recommend it unless one is after a grope or ten.

I haven't stepped in the Pyramid in over ten years, I bet.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

why would anyone go to the pyramid in 2006?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno! My references are from the '90s. Maybe you could stop by the Sound Factory after? :)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, I have been on the case with this and a friend of a friend has recomended the following...

CHELSEA

Elmo (really more a restaurant, but quite the scene)

G(a bit tired, but people still go)

Opus 22(sunday’s from 3pm - 9 ish). about the best thing happending in new york right now — but who knows for how long.

Hiro(sunday nights... where all the fashionista’s go)

HELL’S KITCHEN

Vlada — people like it — but again, I find it to be the island of misfit toys. (mark sez: I don't really understand what that means???)

Therapy... the first “stylish” bar in hellsea — still the ole’ standby

EAST VILLAGE

Nowhere — my FAVORITE gay bar in the city. divey, dark — and the least gay, gay-bar

Phoenix — divey

Urge — dirty, divey nasty... can be fun

so that's another vote for the phoenix! what do people think re the others?

Mark Co (Markco), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

Vlada — people like it — but again, I find it to be the island of misfit toys. (mark sez: I don't really understand what that means???)

It's a reference to the American Christmas special Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer: it's where all the fucked-up, broken, ill-conceived, and unwanted toys are sent.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

as I've hinted before with Nowhere, if the barkeep unplugs the juke on you, punch his lights out.

I was in G once for the novelty. a "sit and pose" bar? Haven't been to those others.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

open a bar called Big Lug and watch the hairy, burly boys line up (marginally NSFW):

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 October 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Oh this reminds me to ask. I'm not 21 and don't have $100 to drop on an ID that's only gonna be useful for a year and a half. What is there for me to do? Anything that's, like, not a nightclub? The more not-gay the better (I'm really not one for the whole sassy queen thing). It'd be great if I could get into Big Lug or the Dugout...

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 26 October 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

There are 18+ dance nights around, I think, but unless you're into frosted blond twinks practicing their booty-popping to Rihanna's "S.O.S.", you might want to avoid those.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 26 October 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god... the last (and first) time I ever went to one of those things... total trainwreck. God, why aren't there underage non-dance social things? Where do all the 21- bears go??!

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 26 October 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

no idea, youngster; sorry.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Christopher Street?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

well, I didn't want to suggest anything "controversial."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Suggest away. Seriously.
