Starring Will Ferrell & Emma Thompson.

This looks pleasantly loopy and fun, right?

Anybody actually seen it yet? Slockers? Etc?

QUERSTION #1: This isn't based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel (which I haven't read), is it?

This is the first movie starring the Ferrell that I've even thought about wanting to see. It looks funny.

Looks horrible.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Monday, 23 October 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

it's got one of those trailers that makes me feel like i've already seen the whole damn movie, so why bother? i hate that.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 23 October 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Nick, no. Palahniuk's book is a collection of essays, this is an original.

x-post

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 23 October 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

But WHAT does Ferrell's character do when he meets the author? The trailer could've been 30 seconds longer.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 23 October 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

i bet $10 theres a "please write a chapter about me fucking the coffee gyllenhaal lady" joek.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 23 October 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

"coffee gyllenhaal lady"?

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 23 October 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 23 October 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

coffee gyllenhaal is the finest actres of our time.

i think this movie looks great.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

i saw her coming out of a exceptionally dilapidated building in vinegar hill once.

I watched another trailer for this, I am really looking forward to a partially toned-down, sympathetic Will Ferrell, although I am also afeared that it might not work and might ruin the movie.

heard bad things about this in TO... but i haven't seen it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

it was a very hot script iirc. but who knows what that means.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

every time i see the trailer i anticipate it a little less.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

cool!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

it's just a bad trailer probably! (i hope)

i mean the first time, i think "well this seems original and clever, etc" and then a second time "well maybe not so original, and maybe it's just a little TOO clever" and after seeing it like 100 times all the inherent little flaws seems to be overwhelming!

im sure the movie will be fine. because im just an optimist like that.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

bundgee and jd otm

it looks like "hey let's do one of those Charlie Kaufman movies but we won't use him or Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry"

plus Dustin Hoffman retreading his character from Huckabees

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

I like the idea. I hate Will Ferrell.

Saw it last week and strongly disliked it. Everything mentioned above is pretty OTM: It's definitely 'I Heart Huckabees'-lite, or very bland Charlie Kaufman. It doesn't make any sense at all, and there's some really cringe-worthy moments. Coffee Gyllenhaal's character - a punk rock baker - is preposterous, though she is charming as ever. You do get to see Will Ferrell perform a solo acoustic version of Wreckless Eric's 'Whole Wide World,' though, which is something I never thought I would see (also, re: the last post: I hate the idea, I like Will Ferrell, so...).

two weeks pass...
Better than you would ever believe from the trailer.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

will ferrell, fighting overexposure with more exposure. so crazy it might ... no, it won't.

literalisp (literalisp), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

The casting of Will Ferrell could actually make the movie, though I'd never have thought of it in a million years. (I haven't seen it, but I saw the most recent trailer yesterday).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

the movie was mostly meh, but I thought WF worked a lot better in somber mode than I could have guessed. Also, Wreckless Eric!!

(Gyllenhal was really foxy, too)

Will (will), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, what a tremendously annoying and trite movie! Could have been pretty good Huckabees-style pseudospew, but instead got a Utne Reader lecture for four years olds on how to follow your bliss. Tom Hulce and Linda Hunt are in this too so there are four Academy Award winners in this movie with nothing apparent to say.

MG and WF weren't annoying and actually kinda charming, too bad it had to be this flick.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 16 November 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

Not even taking into consideration the ridiculous platitudes of the script, which were sort of an inevitability considering the concept of the film, does anything in this movie ring emotionally true? Gyllenhaal falling for Ferrell, and their subsequent relationship? Everyone's reaction to Ferrell's 'condition'?

I think I hate this movie like Chaki hates 'Brick.' Also, 'Brick' is still my favorite movie of the year so far.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 16 November 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Marc Forster has got to be the worst arthouse director of our time.
this movie == not funny, not insightful, and full of itself

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)
