How hard/expensive is it to make a website for myself?

Somewhere I can store mixes, without having to use file factory and the ensuing porn pop ups for people who want to download them, and perhaps host a blog too.

Does it cost much? And also, how difficult is web programming? Would I pick it up and manage to make my site look neat and maybe even...good?

NOT VERY!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

next question: how do I do it?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

it depends. file space and traffic being the big factors.

looking at 1and1.co.uk, 1G space with 15G of traffic a month is a fiver plus vat.

it's very easy to make terrible looking websites. 8) but a basic site can look ok and probably wouldn't even qualify as 'programming'

http://www.warlockmag.com

0 skills and I think my benefactor pays 20 Warlock Bucks/annum or something.

Warlock Magazine (Warlock Magazine), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

its cheap, unless you're storing gb's of music. then it might not be so cheap.

depends on what you mean by web programming. if you're just talking html/css then yes its a doddle and you'll have a pretty looking site.

Flash might make the site even more wizzo, if done sensibly. Although some people are put off by Flash ran sites.

i stick with blogs now, on a seperate host so i get a reasonable domain name and more space for files, as its easier to post new entries (and I blog to it from my phone too)

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

rotary?

Warlock Magazine (Warlock Magazine), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I guess I didn't mean programming really...just "how do I made website"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

do you have a broadband connection?

you can always just install a web server program on it!

e.g. http://www.seedyuk.com = my computer at home.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

Some providers offer free installation of blogs. Yes, yes, BLOGS (so passe) but you twiddle around with the HTML to make it look like you have a PROPPER website.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

You have to mess around with dynamically-updated DNS records, though, to do that. And it's probably against your broadband terms of service - some providers do block you from doing it, others just give you a wrist-slap if they catch you.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

(Offer your mixes on YSI or smething. I think if you have a *deluxe* account it stores the mixes longer?)

does this mean your computer is on 24/7?

;_; (blueski), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

yeah.. i mean, i kind of use it 24/7, pretty much!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

and supposedly when the monitor's off it uses less electricity than a lightbulb

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

you need to be comfortable with a decent text editor (not a word processor) and how files are stored on a pc (ie directory structures)*. each page is a separate .html file etc. image editing skills also required. and some idea about colours.

ste's blog suggestion seems a better idea tbh.

i'd be worried about the legality of uploading hours of music, albeit mixed, onto a site traceable back to you...

* microsoft etc seem to be trying to make their operating systems 'easier' by abstracting the low level file system stuff, hiding extensions, 'My Documents' etc, which means people don't know this fundamental stuff anymore. sorry, personal bugbear. don't get me started about the twunts who use spaces in filenames...

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

> and supposedly when the monitor's off it uses less electricity than a lightbulb

and you'd leave a lightbulb on all day?

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

So just keep my blog and buy some webspace?

I don't want to use Yousendit etc

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

so many bloggers doing it now, plus i don't think people mind as much when it comes to mixes anyway - the material is not isolated but in a particular context among other material. i only had trouble when it was suspected i was selling mixes rather than just giving them away.

;_; (blueski), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

This is how I started:

- sign up to blogger and mess about with a blog for a while

- learn html from various websites (takes seconds!)
- with you're new found skills mess about with your blog template html (you can always revert back to the default template if you fuck up)
- learn css when you're comfy with html (to tidy up your layouts - blogger uses css a lot)
- again mess about with the blog template with your new found skills

- purchase a host server place, shop around for best price
- change the settings in your blog so it publishes to your new host (that way you get all your files and pages in one location and easily accessible by yourself)(but its optional)

- chuck all your mixes onto your server space in a new folder, link from blog

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

mixes seem to be fine. yesterday one of the artists posted a comment thanking me for the support.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

but but but Word can edit HTML files!!! :-D

i might consider leaving the lightbulb on all day if i can access the light it provides remotely from my office during working hours!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

and/or if it's more expensive to buy light from a light provider than purchasing the electricity.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

can you not host the files maybe on backlash?

making a site is pretty easy with just html and css. a good thing to do is just a 'view source' on a site you like, and see how they've done it. flash is kinda contentious, a lot of people dont like it. i find it irritating. you can make the website on your own computer, to see how it will look, before uploading somewhere.

i think its worth getting a domain and space rather, you can incorporate blog/myspace should you wish. a lot of artist sites seem to have myspace/flickr links from frontpage. and a blog section can easily become a news section

decent text editor

for pcs, i have found notepad a worthy program. notepad is better than word anyway, who would want to process a word

-- (688), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

We have the light on in our office all day - cos we don't have any windows.

Notepad is a bit rubbish if you need to do anything intensive. I use emacs.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

or link from blog to myspace, is that possible? instead of another host server.

xxpost

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

> but but but Word can edit HTML files!!! :-D

yeah, and i can put screws in with a hammer if i hit them hard enough. 8)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

For text editing: textpad or editplus - both easy peasy entry level text editors with syntax highlighting (essential!) plus tons of other features for making your life easier. Editplus my personal fave.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

i'm really suprised Microsoft still aren't providing the syntax highlighting option in their 'free' text editors. it's so handy.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

just think: why microsoft would ever want people to be editing syntext with a text editor?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

syntax

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

you dont really need to highlight txt for html!

-- (688), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

Well I wouldn't say it's essential... oh, I did say it's essential. Ok well it helps a little. Certainly makes it look more fun.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

does editplus have a thing where it indicates where the corresponding closing tag/quotes/brackets are? that would be v. handy (like in EMACS where when you hover over one of a pair of tags or brackets it'd make the corresponding one blip on the screen) very useful!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it does - or it should do! Mine seems to have stopped but it definitely used to... :-/

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

you dont really need to highlight txt for html!

well no you don't but it sure can make a really messy html page easier to read sometimes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Home broadband upload is pretty bad for a site where you download MP3s

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

I use Crimson Editor. Nice colour coding for elements, values, variables, etc. plus handy highlights to show me where I fucked up my quotes/brackets and a split screen drag down thingy.

ONIMO has fallen into changing screen name HELL (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)
