A new survey has confirmed the belief of many men - that women are the grumpier sex first thing in the morning. They are not only grumpier more often, they also stay in a bad mood for longer. The survey by the Sleep Council found 24% of men said they never woke up grumpy, as opposed to only 14% of women.

It also found 13% of women stayed in a bad mood for two to four hours, compared to 10% of men.

Just in the morning??

Womens suspicions are true: Men like more in surveys

LIE more, I mean (hi dere freud)

24% of men said they never woke up grumpy

Or any of the other dwarves, either.

C J (C J), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

And, typically, it's actually all the mens' fault!

Nearly three in 10 women blamed their partner's snoring for their sleep problems, but only 13% of men said their partner's snoring was to blame.

nobody is more grumpier than me in the morning, and i'm all man!

(ha)

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's quite well established that females tend to assess themselves more harshly and males tend to assess themselves more leniently in surveys and interviews. 24% of men NEVER waking up grumpy? This doesn't really ring true.

And what does "grumpy" mean anyway?? Some people just need to wake up properly in the morning before doing anything too involved, like maintaining a conversation. Although lack of sleep and time pressure can make one feel hostile.

salexandra (salexander), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not all that grumpy in the mornings because I like mornings, unless I've not had enough sleep (having sleep problems lately but mainly due to rubbish pillows). I am grumpiest on returning home from work in the evening, but usually just because I am hungry then plus know chores obscure leisure.

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

I tend to wak up happy. It's only if I then remember previous stresses or future annoyances (such as getting up for work) that I get pissed off, but even then it's not "grumpy" as such.

The only thing other than lack of sleep (only an occasional problem for me) that makes me grumpy is being too hot.

I usually wake up sleepy (another dwarf!) and don't feel much else until becoming orientated.

And it seems that men are generally more grumpy overall. The stereotype of the grumpy old man didn't come from nowhere. But who cares about the gender war really? Some people are grumpy and others are not.

salexandra (salexander), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

I used to wake up bashful.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

rarely see the missus in the morning. it's like that advert for bike crashes.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

I am permanently knackered, yet manage to remain alarmingly cheerful at all times.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 October 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

I’m knackered all the time as well due to 3 years of not much sleep, but as long as I have a bloody good moan about something, I’m fine and can be moderately cheerful for the rest of the day.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Recent fatherhood in effect, I fancy.

Your partner is sleeping late to spite you.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I have never met a woman as loopy and goofy as I am early in the morning. I infuriated my ex-wife one morning after an acrimonious fight by waking up the next morning and absent-mindedly humming and impersonating various cartoonish characters (as is my wont) as if nothing had happened.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 26 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I was being sarcastic about the cheeriness. I'm a right fucking misery guts really.

But in all honesty I am more likely to be grumpy when I get home.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 October 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

i'm grumpy then too!

who am I kidding I'm grumpy all the time.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Thursday, 26 October 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

The idea that there are any percent of people who have NEVER woken up grumpy is ridiculous, male or female--those people are lying. Even the most cheerful, morningy people I know sometimes wake up in a bad mood!

Also I'm basically disoriented like 99% of the day so I am not really grumpy in the mornings.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not grumpy in the AM, I just don't want to talk about it. At all. Verbal communication is beyond me until coffee is consumed.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm grumpy pretty much all the time...except when I'm depressed. It adds to my mystique.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, as Laurel has it, if you want to see me grumpy in the morning, insist on talking to me about something serious before I've had my coffee.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 26 October 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really grumpy AND huffy in the morning. Apparently, I have this annoying habit of sighing angrily if I have to get up before anyone else. I hate the morning. I hate getting out of bed. I hate it if I didn't set up the coffee pot (timer) the night before. Mornings and I are not buds.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 26 October 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Molly, you charmer!

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 26 October 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I am a delight!

on the news this morning some wag had txted in to say:

oh my sides...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 26 October 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

I am usually the first person to get up in my house and I kind of like the quiet alone time before the rush of the day hits.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 26 October 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Sleep Council promotes the benefits to health and wellbeing of a good night's sleep and the importance of buying a good bed.

The basic message is, if you're not feeling or looking your best, you may not be getting a good night's sleep and, if it's 10 years old or more, that could be your bed's fault.

We have a number of helpful free consumer leaflets offering advice on buying a new bed; how to get a good night's sleep; and a good night guide for children.

We also work hard to expand our knowledge, carrying out or sponsoring research or surveys into people's sleeping habits or attitudes.

The Sleep Council is a non-profit organisation, limited by guarantee and funded by bed manufacturers, retailers and suppliers.
