I am boring and always eat chicken rogan curry with plain naan bread. What delights am I missing out on?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

great, now i have to go eat some curry.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Tandoori lamb chops and duck tikka for starters, or Dosas and Bhel puri

Saag Ghost makes a hearty main, I'm a great fan of anything with lime cooked into the curry, but the names tend to vary from restaurant to restaurant

Ras Malai for desert.

Ed (dali), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

I never remember what curries i like so I always end up eating something different, which I like doing anyway

Lamb korma! Mmmmm almonds....

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Jalfrezi, Silsila, both yum. Rogan Josh is also good. My favourite side is probably saag paneer.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

sticking to the veggie side of the menu...malai kofta, pretty much any spinach curry (saag paneer, saag chana, etc), baingan bhartha. one place i used to order from had a completely astounding tomato curry, can't remember what it's called. place closed, sadly.

well i know what i'm getting for lunch now.

ALL CURRIES

gbx (skowly), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I want more curry choices!! Portland, Oregon is seriously deficient in good cheap Indian / Pakistani cafes and restaurants. We somewhat compensate with a plenitude of good cheap Vietnamese joints out near 82nd Avenue.

Haha Anna, you have a lot of choices:

katsu curry - Japanese and turmeric/curry powder chemical taste, but all the better for it
thai - green, red, masaman, panang
burmese - time for a trip to Mandalay I say.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

But Indian curries are best. God bless the British Empire!

One of my favourites

I cooked a good chicken and onion one out of Madhur Jaffrey the other week, maybe I'll come and transcribe it here when I can be arsed.

i had a spectacular orange thai curry with various squashes a few weeks ago. my new mission is to replicate it. otherwise i'm a fan of pretty much anything involving lamb.

i did have curry for lunch, the daily vegetarian special at the place on the corner -- saag paneer with chana masala, liberally dosed with mint and tamarind chutneys. now i want more.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 27 October 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

all curries are equally great in the eyes of god.

my wife's been making mushroom, peas and paneer as a curry with yoghurt, it's killer.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 27 October 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Dahi Murg turned out pretty well! I recommend it! Hooray for curry with yogurt! My apartment smells really lovely as a result of the mint and garam masala. The recipe makes the perfect amount for 2 hungry folks.

molly d (mollyd), Saturday, 28 October 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

now y'all should post recipes! please?

Tonight for dinner I had - from my fave local restaurant where everything's faarreshhhh - biryani with 1) motor paneer 2) dum aloo 3) vegetable subzi and
really amazing curried eggplants and karela fried with sweet onions. And chapatis.

I went out for 2 curries last week, both unexpectedly delicious. One was in Lyme Regis of all places and then in Leamington Spa something called Honey Moon Chicken that was ridiculously tasty despite a bizarre list of ingredients (including honey).

i had a curry from the chinese shop last night. it was great, made of basically your standard curry paste, but loaded with MSG. SO WRONG, YET SO RIGHT.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

For vegetarian options, Aloo mutter and Navaratan Korma are trés good. I made up a vegetable korma curry a while ago - it had onion, garlic, potato, pumpkin, carrot and peas, as well as the spices and curry paste. Naan bread and raita are such good accompaniments.

A friend from Singapore cooks awesome curries and she makes this side dish with cucumber, celery, red capsicum and yoghurt which is so yum.

salexandra (salexander), Monday, 30 October 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

I've just come back from eating nothing but curry for a fortnight and I'm now a dedicated Xacuti convert. Shame you can't get it in most places in London.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 30 October 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

I branched out. Cannot remember what the thing was called for the life of me, but it was very tasy and had bits of shredded potato in the sauce.

six years pass...

my wife thinks i'm weird for eating chicken vindaloo leftovers cold, straight from the takeaway container the next day. but i like it.

ian, Friday, 25 October 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

done it, loved it

surm, Friday, 25 October 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

reheating takeout is weird imo. unless you're making something new, like fried rice, which is always a good idea by the way.

stylings (Matt P), Friday, 25 October 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

yeah i dunno indian especially, i like masala cold sometimes too

surm, Friday, 25 October 2013 21:43 (twelve years ago)

maybe it's the cream content? i wouldn't want to eat, say, pot roast cold. *thinks about it* i like food

stylings (Matt P), Friday, 25 October 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

i wouldn't want to eat, say, pot roast cold.

absurdity... roast beef?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 25 October 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

Indian leftovers are highly prized in our household. We do, however, heat them up.

I make little piles of different curries over a bed of rice and nuke it; spouse MIXES ALL OF THE CURRIES TOGETHER WITH THE RICE and heats it in a pan why because he hates microwaves.

quincie, Saturday, 26 October 2013 06:21 (twelve years ago)

This is for breakfast the day after, I should say. There is nothing, NOTHING, that I will not eat for breakfast that I would eat at other times of the day.

quincie, Saturday, 26 October 2013 06:22 (twelve years ago)

i agree with the breakfast thing but i am NOT a mixer, so that all the curries with the rice in the pan thing freaks me the fuck out

one of my friends does this with her eggs and hash and all that. i like my separate portions.

surm, Saturday, 26 October 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

Cold curry is the best breakfast.

Chicken Bhuna atm for me. Tomatoes, Onions, Ginger, Garlic, Spices, Chicken, Chick Peas, Water, Tomato puree and Coriander and lemon juice to garnish - it's done in half an hour!

calzino, Tuesday, 26 June 2018 22:36 (seven years ago)

Yeah I'm a fan of tomatoes and peppers etc so Bhuna, Jalfrezi, Korai, Dopiaza. To be honest, I'm not super-sure of the difference between all these beyond a change in the balance of spices, but they're my go-tos and the curry I make at home is kind of a hybrid of these

v much enjoying my coconut fish curries atm. some variation or combination of: coconut milk, coconut oil, hake or similar, prawns, ginger, lemongrass, lime, onion, bell pepper, chili, fresh coriander, fish sauce, whatever dried spices & seasoning I'm feeling like, all done inside half an hour. what's not to like?

saag in all its many varieties not mentioned enough itt - love a lamb saag

topless from 11am (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 10:37 (seven years ago)

I never had mango chicken curry til I started getting it from this place in Flagstaff and now it's my favorite. I don't even really like mango! Def doesn't have a fruity taste to it. Haven't tried it anywhere else so could be that this place's version is different from "normal"?? Can't get good Indian closer to my home so pretty much anytime I'm up there I get at least 3 dishes + 2 naans to have for the next few days (mango chik, madras curry, veggie korma is #1 combo mmmmm)
