THERE IS SO MUCH GREAT STUFF COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER AND I AM BROKE! :-(

Especially since I've been purging my CD collection of late and told myself it's time to stop spending money. It seems that all year we've had a media drought and then along comes November with umpteen releases that I've been looking forward to for ages...
Post your early-Christmas Wishlist here:

Tom Waits - Orphans, Brawlers and Bastards (Tom, Y 2 Brake heart with triple album when me broke?)
Joanna Newsom - Ys
Mighty Boosh - Live at Brixton Academy (I was there! Yeah!)
Family Guy - Season 5
Shameless - Season 3 (am I the only fan of this on ILX?)
Planet Earth on DVD
Peep Show - Series 3

SO UNFAIR!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't buy any of these.
With Tom Waits a ten-year period of silence would be welcome.
Joanna Newsom is overrated poppyflock.
And I don't buy DVDs anyway.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Mighty Boosh - Live at Brixton Academy (I was there! Yeah!)

i hear that you and your sidekick have done a student revue routine and got a tv series out of it

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

the tom waits thing is ok but not worth spending actual money on or anything.

I have momentarily pondered the idea of copying my entire CD collection and then selling the originals on ebay or amazon or something. Even if I only got a couple of quid each for them, that'd be like thousands of ££.

But then I couldn't be arsed.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

have you heard it lex? why is it just "okay"?

I have momentarily pondered the idea of copying my entire CD collection and then selling the originals on ebay or amazon or something. Even if I only got a couple of quid each for them, that'd be like thousands of ££.

I've basically done this although I'm not selling on Amazon/e-bay because I can't be arsed/don't really know how. I'm selling to my mates but really they're going for 50p-£5 but verging on the former. Niggaz b broke these days.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

if you've spent money on series 1-4 of family guy you've only yourself to blame.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Seinfeld Season 7 out late November
A wok

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

But that would make you like DLT, with no record collection because he taped them all, and you would be the subject of sorrowful glances from the John Peel de nos jours.

(xpost x 2)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Garth Merenghi's Darkplace came out recently too!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

-- benrique (miltonpinsk...), October 31st, 2006 11:45 AM. (Enrique)

I've said it before and I'll say it again that you are very silly.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

i have been toying with putting all my old videos on ebay but it can't be worth the admin really.

the marenghi series was a bit repetitive but the dvd apparently has in-character commentaries so i'm tempted by that.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Mm, I can't remember when I last bought a CD or DVD. The nice people at Lovefilm will be sending me the Boosh and Peep Show though. Although I probably will end up buying the latter if nothing else this year.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

have you heard it lex? why is it just "okay"?

because it's the same as ever and there are no new ideas whatsoever apart from the (quite good) iraq song and waits' entire appeal is the way he frames these over-familiar outsider clichés which means that when it's good it's a nice way to pass time but not wirth spending money for 3 cds' worth of the stuff.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

And the Pavement Wowee Zowee reissue....

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

no, the word is old rather than silly

xp

acrobat (elwisty), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I run a bit of a sideline selling books on amazon - it's very easy to do, and I make a couple of hundred extra quid a month for not much effort. I love books, and it's just fun to trade in them.

You just go to amazon, search their site for the book (or in your case, the CD) you have to sell, and click on the "sell yours here" button. You then list yours, and away you go. The first time you sign up, you give amazon details of what bank you want them to send your payments to, and they just transfer the dosh straight into your account every month. They take their cut of course, but they pay you postage for the items so it's swings and roundabouts really.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

It is nigh on impossible to sell videos, in my limited experience.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

And the Pavement Wowee Zowee reissue....
-- wogan lenin (doglati...), October 31st, 2006.

you can't get excited about a reissue if you own the original. come on now.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

you can get excited because it's got an extra cd-and-a-half's worth of unreleased stuff on it.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

cheers CJ, I may need to try that.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

it's more the complexities and hassle of setting up paypal that puts me off.

Looking at Boomkat is utterly foolish in these circumstances... I think I've just about escaped needing to buy anything else in Nov/Dec now after a way too busy month and I'm looking forward to a break and getting to know my music better again for a while!

Few things I'm suprised even I can't find enough reason to buy recently - last MoM album, Immer 2, most techno/minimal-house right now etc

I can't afford DVD's and music :/

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

i think people are upset because the build up of the thread title "THERE IS SO MUCH GREAT STUFF COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER AND I AM BROKE" promising loads of must-buy items that you would want to buy even if you have very little money, and was let down by the frankly underwhelming list of items that, well, many may think twice before buying even when solvent.

it's like the sky sports advert a while back "GREAT LINE UP OF SPORTS FOR JULY" and then it was like "LAWN BOWLS WORLD TOURNAMENT", "MEXICO CHAMPIONSHIP SLALOM", thanks, sky.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

Planet Earth DVD would be well worth owning, in relative terms.

only if it's owning as in headshot.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

not yet anyway

DVDs are not cheaper than cinema tickets.

they frequently are. cinema tickets can be like £9

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

why do people even breath air anymore?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

but DVDs are like £10.99??

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

but you can always resale a dvd and get some of your money back. money for a movie ticket is gone forever.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

but DVDs are like £10.99??
-- ken c (pykachu10...), October 31st, 2006.

some of them are. varies! some of them cost more than £20.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

with VHS ownership it was more about building up a film collection in the same way you would build a music collection. obviously this continues and has probably expanded with DVD and if you love film as much as one might love music you're going to want to own the material - seems reasonable enough (there's an implication that generally a favourite film might not be watched as often as a favourite album might be listened to but can't be arsed to speculate too much about that - although i do wonder if there's a film i've seen more than 10 times in my life personally).

;_; (blueski), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

i suppose. maybe buying DVDs 2nd hand is the way to go. or just renting them, if you watch lots.

i tried to breath air less actually cos it emits CO2

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

xxpost £20 is still more than £9!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

VHS movies were ridiculously expensive to buy originally weren't they?

;_; (blueski), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

owning films at home is so that you can invite girls to come back to watch with you innit.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

i used to watch videos more than once, hell yeah. on the other hand, there are some that i *never got round to watching at all*.

but then people a) don't read all the books they buy b) don't read them twice.

xxpost £20 is still more than £9!!!
-- ken c (pykachu10...)

yes. SOME dvds be cheaper than cinema tickets.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I understand girls will be allowed to own their own films at home from 2008.

LIES

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

even six-seven years ago a new video would cost about what a new dvd costs now. taking into account inflation + comparative awesomeness of dvd, they were insanely pricey.

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

will girls be allowed to be invited to see films they already own at home come 2008? with rights come responsibilities.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

here we go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_Video (sounds like no one film was first on VHS but 50 simultaneous releases via Fox?)

but when you bought video tapes you could tape match of the day over the cassette later if you wanted, but NAH UH with DVDs, so VHS was better value.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

no but it records onto a hard drive and you can also burn things onto blank dvds. there's really no point in having vcrs anymore.

no. of people in the world who actually recorded something else over a movie they bought on VHS: 34

(i did this a couple of times with albums I bought on cassette and was disappointed by)

the sooner it's all streamable/downloadable on demand the better.

how much is a DVDR/HardDisk recorder these days? and do they work well? i still think of them as being in the 'new tech' category i.e. buggy as hell and hard to use/lack good features.

like CDRs in the early days when you'd waste 20 blank CDs before making a working one.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

it's called a "wee". that's all i know.
