Has anybody read any of these YOUNG BOND books by Charlie "out of The" Higson(s)? The new book is currently available in SHINY shrink-wrap in Borders/Blackwells etc 3 for 2 offers. I like shiny wrapping! I like mysteries! I like James Bond! I even liked James Bond Junior - do you remember the cartoon? OK, I was bored those days BUT STILL.

Synopsis of Blood Fever:
File Note: Strictly Confidential - Authorised Personnel Only. Subject: James Bond. Description: Age 13. Dark hair; blue eyes; tall for age; surprisingly strong; fluent French, good German. Essential components: A Mediterranean mystery. One kidnapped girl - feisty, blond, superfit Amy Goodenough, sister of James' best friend Mark. One villainous pirate - Zoltan Magyr. Mysterious Latin-speaking men lurking near Eton. One fast car.

Repeat til Charlie Higson = millionaire.

So... anyone?

(I have no idea what this voting for the title malarkey is all about, probably cos I don't watch Newsround anymore).

For DOUBLE OR DIE:

In North London cemetery, a professor is kidnapped at gunpoint. A suspicious letter crammed with cryptic clues arrives at Eton. To decipher the deadly mystery, James Bond must take a series of dangerous gambles. Once the code is cracked, he has just forty-eight hours to save the professor from the dark forces that threaten to destroy them both. And, if the professor can't escape, it's not only his future under threat. It's the rest of the world's ...

In my head this is going to be like a bonkers Christopher Fowler plot, but with YOUNG BOND instead of an aging detective duo - but it will probably be like the Mark Gatiss books without the g4y1sm ie not much hem hem. No offence Mark I actually quite liked 'em. Keep writing them. Instead of rub Dr Who episodes.

xpost: Bond + trucker hat = argh!

Sigh - is it a proven fact that people don't read past your first sentence online these days? I'd believe it from the lazy snark at the Guardian online alone...

Are these books available in any sort of 3 for 2 offer? And - forgive me, I've often wondered this - what are your opinions on shiny wrapping?

the idea of (live action!! rrowr) Young Bond has an irresistability quotient up there with Young Sherlock Holmes, although it's more complicated than YSH because with the latter it's easy to determine the kid's "type" - a reclusive know-it-all who's already beyond precosity and into the realm of wunderkind. But Bond is so automatically *adult* - the sex, the violence - where would you pitch the age of the kid? 13? 14? 18 and he might already be too rough around the edges, though

Well each blurb has mentioned his attendance at Eton and the loss of his parents - so I imagine there'll be a lot of transitional stuff from going to a fairly knockabout child to a more 'worldly' (in the class sense at least) adolescent. The GIRLS issue is something I have no idea about - boys only skool? I imagine there will be a lot of CLIMBING OUT OF WINDOWS etc. They probably will not address what I hear generally goes on in boys only skools.

Violence and s3x are pretty big motivators at high school age for certain types anyhoo - just less automatic weapons (one would hope)!
