"bop" is Oxford-ese for a college party or social event, usually organised by elected student reps and held in e.g. the college bar or common room. fancy dress themes are common bcz how else do distinguish your specially-organised night of going to the bar and drinking from what students do every other night anyway?

The best part of these stories is going to the student newspaper's coverage where lots of future frat-party-lawyers give some truly brilliant arguments. I think they've really opened my eyes to my OWN hypocrisy!

While many Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapters today claim that Noble Leslie DeVotie was the first person to die in the Civil War, this is in dispute. DeVotie lost his footing while boarding a steamer at Fort Morgan, Alabama, on February 12, 1861, hit his head and drowned. His body washed ashore three days later. Because Alabama had already seceded from the Union in January of that year, DeVotie is viewed by many to be the first casualty of the war. He is recognized as such by the state of Alabama.

At my school they were famous/infamous for allegedly having a parental income requirement of at least 6 figures for any prospective pledges. Their house was a huge stone mansion.
