sit up straight!

Why, do you think all this slouching has something to do with why my upper back, shoulders, and neck are always sore?

Good posture has seriously improved my life. It also makes your boobs look bigga.

I have discovered it also makes a difference when I sleep: ie flat on back or stomich=fine feelings throughout day; wacky pseudo-fetal pillow-covering=o the pain. I quit cuddling the pillow and started putting it over my head. Works great to obscure light.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

I try to stand up straight not to make my boobs look bigger (when you're small, it's hard to hide that fact with anything other than implants or something), but rather to make my belly look flatter. It is sitting at a computer that I have a posture problem with. I also tend to carry tension in my shoulders, which helps nothing.

Re sleeping - I always sleep on my side, but always with a pillow between my knees; otherwise I have lower back aggravations. I also got one of those Tempur-Pedic pillows for my head, which I like... but they are expensive. Also, you can't fling yourself onto them like you can with regular pillows because they don't have enough "give."

Also on men.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think that's better than manboobs gently resting on their globe bellies, although the manboobs appear to be peaceful & content in said scenario.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Good posture makes you feel PROUD!

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

gar. this is why people always think i have big boobs when i do not really. i just have good posture and okay bras. uh.

i went to a yoga class this morning, which always reminds me that key to good posture is pulling shoulders back and down as if you were trying to get your shoulder blades to touch - so, not so much abt sticking chest out in fact. my shoulders would be land of tension located around my ears if i didn't think about this every day.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

it is also a good thing to be aware of when running or walking or bike riding

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it is all shoulders and neck, and they need your love!

The boobs thing isn't rly an incentive for me, either. It's just true.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

i have terrible, terrible posture despite having a history doing ballet AND a lengthy stint with pilates post-ballet. i just can't keep the idea in my head to keep my shoulders where they should be :(

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmmm, maybe yoga could help me. Or Pilates.

Earlier today I was also thinking about trying to make time to do the classic modern dance class exercise where you slowly roll forward and then stand back up, concentrating on going "one vertebrae at a time" in both directions. I tried it a couple of times and realized how stiff I've gotten... this is probably as a result of the questionable posture habits I've developed.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

My good posture is the only aspect of my health that I have managed to maintain over the last few years of being horrible to/with my body.

One-time ilxor Cpr3k once upon a time got a kick out of/made fun of me for my good posture + predilection for listening to music with eyes closed.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that is a good exercise!
xpost
the yoga i do is all about alignment, holding poses, and, e.g., countering every forward bend with a backward bend - balance but also awareness - which i find ideal - sitting in a chair looking at computer screen for most of the day is not so good for the shoulders and neck and awareness...

i am totally into the part in yoga class when we close our eyes and say OM too

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

also, i have a mom who may be somewhat hippie but said "sit up straight! shoulders back!" throughout my childhood, adolescent years, 20s, and still does... i mean, she says it to her husband even. totally works tho.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

feet flat on floor - winnah

I think of Mr Dastoor as having excellent posture.

I have dreadful posture - I'm slumped forward in my chair now, butt perched on the end as if I'm renting the seat by the centimetre.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm always catching glimpses of my reflection in store windows as I'm walking down the street, and my first thought is almost always "Who let that chimpanzee get out?!!!" Then I straighten up, but that lasts only about 3 minutes.

nickn, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I have noticed that my shoulders are totally rounded, and they hurt now and again. This is not good, has anyone tried the Alexander Technique? I can never get in to a yoga routine. Maybe I could just get a new back, I don't wanna be a hunch back!!

jel --, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

shoulders back, people!

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

i need to get back into yoga. skiing/biking has ruined my lower back. i'm like two inches taller when i stand up straight

river wolf, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Sadly, my posture has not improved since this thread started. I think I need it to randomly pop up on my computer screen and nag at me in a loud voice.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

Geez this thread made me sit up straight too, heh. I have *terrible* posture and bad back/shoulder/neck.

Trayce, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't change anything about my slouching (?) posture.

nathalie, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

Me too, but my first Alexander technique class is tomorrow afternoon. Hooray! Tomorrow I fight back against rounded shoulders and back pain. And necklessness.

suit jackets arnt fitting the same anymore :(

chaki, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

I can now click the tune to Miss Marple with my back, years of fine tuned posture have given me amazing ski11z0rs.

klankton, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

I have the worst posture ever. My shoulders have started to click pretty loudly if I correct it. Having quite a large chest (not quite man boobs as such, more rib cage) hasn't helped because sitting up straight means sticking it out which feels silly. So I tend to go round holding my chest in and so awkwardly tucking my shoulders in too. Been trying to do back exercises and a few postural changes, but it isn't really helping.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

Is it cos we is all nerdsies who sit in front of a computer all day that we have such wrecked spines?

Trayce, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yes it is. Also the fashion at our school for never ever carrying your rucksack/schoolbag on both shoulders. Always one shoulder - fucking ridiculaous.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:08 (nineteen years ago)
