I seem to remember once reading that it was an Olympic sport in the 1930s. Why it isn't today probably has to do with cricket's nonpresence in the United States.

j.lu, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was about 2 or 3 olympics back. It might be something to do with professionalism...technically no pro sports people can compete in the olympics. It would be really great to have one-day cricket included!

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pardon my ignorance but dont even the shorter version of the games take forever?

Mr Noodles, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

just a day dude! Start at 11pm, finish around 6.30...with a break for lunch inbetween innings.

j>e>l, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bring back the timeless tests!! the olympics lasts for weeks! you could have dozens of full five-day matches in that time... cut away to ahem highlights during the dull bits of the dressage

m>a>r>k>>s, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BECAUSE THEY APPLY TO MUCH PASSION

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

because it is a very poor game.

JM, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

because if it waz test cricket, the series would go on for longer than 4 olympics put together.

Geoff, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus it's winter, you know.

David Raposa, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tho if England are all out for 89, as they were last weekend vs EnZud, then cricket over in 1/2 day hem hem.

AP, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Considering that only 12 countries played the last world cup, I think even test cricket can be played in Olympics..... But I think it would be awfully boring... I would not mind one day though.

Atul, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't be bothered finding the old Olympic threads so let's keep it going here....

-All the females in ice dance look like hi-class mid-mileage HOOKERS. ALL OF THEM.

-All the German chicks in Nordic combined look like Randal from "Clerks" with long hair and light acne.....

-Apollo Anton Ohno represents but his face bothers me....he looks like the kind of guy that does the following at a party: 1) when a really good fistfight is about to break out, he breaks it up. 2) wears shorts. 3) cockblocks.

-The men's mogul skiing judges were fucked up more than the womens (Mosely didn't even medal?!?) as were the snowboard pipe judges (Ross Powers is a hula-hooping, no-grabbing styleless punk)....it's like the judges for all the "style" sports are all eurotrash oldfolks that have no idea what's actually considered good style by people that actually do the sports, dig?

-I CAN'T BELIEVE I BIGGED UP HANNAH H. THAT MUCH AND THEN FORGOT TO WATCH MTV DIARY!!!

-I love how unhealthy the euro distance ski-jumpers look....i counted 3 skinny muthafiggles with white spots on their teeth....

-Lots of NBC's commentary at night for sports that didn't make the daytime cut is recorded after the fact so it all syncs up to the editing....it sucks the life out knowing the amped-up commentator knows how everything turned out and is just plain bullshitting. w3rd

Ramosi, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cricket was definitely in the London Olympics in the early 30's??? I think, and possibly a few others, then disappeared out of sight along with rugby (the current holders of that are the USA iirc) The cricket was in the Commonwealth games a few games ago though, but I think it was judged unsuccessful.

chris, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

for the world cup to work with 12 teams you need a country with several first class grounds, I think 8 were used for the UK edition a few years back. No city could build that many cricket grounds to such a standard. Cricket would have to be played in schoolboy length games to fit it all oneto one or two pitches. Plus it is a minority sport, mind you so is ice hockey.

Ed, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cricket was only ever in the Olympics once: Paris 1900. It wasn't an officially sanctioned event (no medals), though tug-of-war, live pigeon shooting and obstacle race were. No sign of cricket in the London games of 1908 and 1948.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A good summary of why cricket isn't in the Olympics.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That'll be the false memory syndrome again Mike, or maybe I was thinking of the commonwealth games all along??

chris, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it because cricket cannot be played on a running track?

alix, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have you never played RUNNING CRICKET Campbell?

Ally C, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate all these team sports being in the Olympics. Especially big ones like football that have their own proper world championships. The Olympic versions just end up being Mickey Mouse. Olympics should be about faster stronger further and that's all.

N., Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, Lily, but I have played Lethal French Cricket. Just ask Carsmile.

alix, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

THEY CAN PLAY TWENTY20 NOW

(Jagger, back me up on this now you're back.)

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

I've been calling for this since 2020 began, but not very loudly, as I don't really care much about the Olympics. Would be good, though.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

eh all these super popular team sports basketball hockey cricket etc they just dont feel olympic theyre already all set up w/their own situations they should just do that - olympics is best for weirdo shit like the one where u ski then shoot a guy

jhøshea, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

Basketball at the Olympics is good because it's wonderful to see some relaxed Americans for once.

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, keep cricket out of the Olympics. I don't even think football should be there. But, in terms of making lots and lots of money for somebody or other, it would be a good idea - just think how many more people (millions, hundreds of millions) would watch the Olympics in India (and the subcontinent)

Tom D., Friday, 30 May 2008 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Would have been great to see the Chinese Cricket Team, as they would have qualified as hosts.

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

20/20 would be ok

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

China vs India cricket match - surely the biggest potential audience in sport?

Tom D., Friday, 30 May 2008 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Can't wait for the test series.

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

It's funny when you see these old threads revived and see yourself bringing the knowledge, like it isn't something you just looked up. I have absolutely no memory of knowing that stuff about cricket in the Olympics...

Michael Jones, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

YEAH PROBABLY LOOKED UP WIKIPEDIA HEY

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

four years pass...

this would be the only way cricket would get shown on American TV
someday...

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Thursday, 14 June 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

I've said before that a sports version of BBC America -- with cricket, darts and snooker plus whatever else they could get rights to -- would be on 24/7 in my office.

Biff Wellington (WmC), Thursday, 14 June 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

ESPN Britshers

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Thursday, 14 June 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

I'd watch the hell out of that. If there's not any international MMA, just show some Aussie rules football.

Biff Wellington (WmC), Thursday, 14 June 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

i wish i could give you access to all of this stuff i'm able to watch in return for your tennis channel ;_;

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

Rather a shame that the man who looked most likely to break cricket in the US is starting a 110-year jail term today.

Surely it has to be on cable, or something, though? Nowhere a significant number of Indians live would be without it.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

?! to whom are you referring?

goole, Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

Allen Stanford.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

ah yes, "Sir" Allen.

wait a few years for a bigger south asian diaspora in the US. if that doesn't do it nothing will.

but yes, it'll be the cashed-up South Asian IT workers that will push Cricket to the heights of Arena Football and Lacrosse in those United States of America

Gentlemen Take Instagram Photos (King Boy Pato), Friday, 15 June 2012 08:37 (thirteen years ago)

here's hoping, we just got an arena football team this year

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

i was about to say that there's no reason for cricket not to be an olympic sport considering the fact that baseball is one and has just as few countries playing it but googling shows that it is out starting from this year's olympics (first sport to be kicked out since polo in 1936 says wiki !)

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

Baseball as an olympic sport never really made sense anyway. Major league baseball isn't going to interrupt the season so the players can go to the olympics so you end up with a bunch of minor leaguers. The olympics should be for the best athletes in the world.

Although I suspect that there are more countries which play baseball than cricket.

silverfish, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

i'd venture that a larger number of ppl in the world play/care abt cricket than baseball, even if th number of countries isn't that diffnt

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

basically it's USA, Japan, and Central America/parts of south America for baseball
vs. south Asian subcontinent, the anglophone world minus USA, some Africa, some Arab world

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

ya poorly phrased up there, i meant it in the way m bison explained, population-wise.

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

I think Bud Selig, Dr. Morbius and a few others are involved in a conspiracy to keep cricket off of US tv.

Biff Wellington (WmC), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

quick, dial mi6 for some undercover murdering

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

this reminds me, the other day i was talking with my dad about cricket and we were wondering what other sports there were in which the second team knows exactly how much they have to score to win? i'm talking about one day cricket & twenty20 here, where one team bats, puts up a score and then the other team has to beat that. most sports have both teams trying to score at the same time (football, basketball, handball, hockey, rugby etc), stuff like baseball you have multiple rounds etc.

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

I guess in baseball in the bottom of the 9th

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

btw this fact is one of the reasons cricket is so entertaining to me... the end of games where the batting team knows exactly how many runs it needs and how many balls and wickets are left makes it really tense !

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

don't totally agree with you there m bison, mostly cos you don't have a fixed amount of bowling. bottom of the ninth you can get 3 outs in 3 balls or get endless runs scored against you. in cricket you know you only have x balls left to score x runs.

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

but if you're the home team and you are down, you know exactly how many runs need to be scored to win. it's not perfectly analogous to cricket bc there you know the precise number of bowls available to do it, but I think it meets the scoring criteria

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

i'm totally not good at explaining what to me makes a huge difference between baseball and cricket. but basically baseball lacks the whole urgency of the last few overs in cricket imo (keep in mind i'm totally not a baseball fan and have probaby seen less than 10 games in my entire life, which probably means i shouldn't even be making such comparisons).

its a bit past 11pm here and i'm a bit drunk so i really can't seem to be able to make my point so i'll just leave it at that. but if you have any other sports that come to mind about the whole chasing a score, i'd like to know what they are.

Jibe, Friday, 15 June 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

oh I can't think of any myself and it's 10:30 in the morning here.
I mean, there are similarly exciting moments in most sports when a team is down a large sum and slowly comes back to win the game in the end. but there's lots of back and forth in basketball, hockey, or American football.
