Why, do you have a cold?

Mark C, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Goth Morris Dancers! I saw some of these in Camden once, they had facemasks (like Slipknot, rather than pore-cleansing CLAY based ones you mite get at 1x health spa). Beyond classic, obv (although I don't think you should let the deranged near those big sticks).

Sam - In a lot of the world, this is Labo(u)r Day, commemorating the union movement generally and the Haymarket Riots in particular.

Of course, here in 'Murka, Labor Day is at the other end of the hot season and has been pretty well divorced from any notion of such treasonous commie bullshit as collective bargaining.

Just learned that here in the USA today is both "Loyalty Day" and "Law Day". They might as well go ahead and make it the official "Strike Breakers Appreciation Day" or some shit.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 May 2007 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ironically, it was here in the U.S. that May Day became a day of commemoration for the left after the Haymarket Riot in Chicago.

how do you plan to celebrate?

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

well, i looked up some information, and it turns out that may has oft been a symbol of fertility. so i'm going to have a baby. haha not.

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:46 (fourteen years ago)

laurel
those dancers are so badass i can't even handle it

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

i have a book that tells me everything i need to build and properly honor a maypole (among other things) but it's REALLY complicated and i don't have a yard. i'm going to have a picnic, but it'll be contingent on weather. so i'm trying to think good thoughts.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

picnic in a public park, that is

i think we might burn something if we can get away with it.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

Maypoles are a giant pain in the neck. Try lifting some garlands instead!

surm, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to ponder my potential for fertility, because just because it isn't exercised doesn't mean the power isn't there. And think snakely thoughts of rebirth and renewal.

http://badatsports.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/IMG_0024-450x600.jpg

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

Lech, I first heard either that particular version or a very similar arrangement in the British Library - they had an exhibition on linguistic changes in English, and that audio exhibit sent a shiver up my spine. It actually took a while for me to cotton on that they'd used it in The Wicker Man, I thought the familiarity was some sort of pagan ancestral kinship...

emil.y, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

That sounds like an extremely memorable exhibit. How lucky you were to have seen it! All I know about that song is that it's purportedly the first song written in English, thereby making it the oldest known English folk song. I don't know anything about how that came to be known or decided, though.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

decided, more likely

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

I suppose there's a reasonable amount of historical detritus left from that period, so they'd have a good stab at being right. Though there's always a certain amount of elision and elitism - 'first' is accepted as 'first with a written record', which is obviously going to err towards the educated and the ability to create and keep such records.

emil.y, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I meant -- it's the Sharp approach, right? I'm trying to remember things I learned when I read Electric Eden but my brain doesn't retain information unless I use it immediately (and even then...), so I only vaguely remember that there was a Cecil Sharp, and he favored a very scholarly approach to folk music.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

why is this not a public holiday?

fine with 49 (sunny successor), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

That is a very good question. Drinking opportunities? Check. Parade opportunities, check. What more do they want?

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

the goal of peace and full employment is a perfect reason to take a break from said employment and enjoy some peace

fine with 49 (sunny successor), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

We have a bank holiday around this time, though every year someone says that there are too many too close to the same time, and we should get rid of it. Funnily enough, it's always the one that's related to the workers' cause that they suggest scrapping.
