The Donnell branch library on 53rd bet 5& 6th gets crowded but there's a decent selection of magazines to browse. Upstairs tables.
The upper floors of the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center are a dream, real quiet. But you'd have to make it look like you're doing research in the collection, not sure if you could just setup yr laptop and start banging away w/o the librarians noticing.

if you're stuck in midtown the business library on madison and 34th is great, with ethernet cables just a danglin' for you to plug in your computer should you want to. no library card required.
