Holy shit - myself and a friend were walking around Greenwich yesterday, and we thought about walking right past it but opted to go round the back way and into the park. Her reasoning was "I've seen the Cutty Sark before" and I was like "yeah me too, it's not exactly going anywhere".
Some of my earliest memories involve hanging around with my parents near the Cutty Sark. :(
― Matt DC, Monday, 21 May 2007 08:07 (nineteen years ago)
Well, you wouldn't have seen the Cutty Sark yesterday if it's any consolation. You'd have seen this (and several yards of 10-ft blue hoardings):

― Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:06 (nineteen years ago)
Given that the Cutty Sark was a tea clipper that spent its days whoohing back and forth between Britain and China I'm not sure how it relates to our "glorious history of raping other countries".
It was built in 1869, a full nine years after the second opium war ended.... So what part did it play in "raping other countries"?
Just curious.

If you tore down or destroyed every monument in the world that had it's roots in exploitation, oppression or violence you wouldn't be left with very much, to be honest.
― Matt DC, Monday, 21 May 2007 09:40 (nineteen years ago)
Ugh stray apostrophe.
Nah. Just fucking about. But my points if there was some might be about symbols always producing different meanings for different people, plus something about transience being built into history and being sadder about the Library at Alexandria burning down than some boat. Plus misanthropy.

Thank god. I thought this was going to be about Sara's cat.
― Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)
Anyway, no it's not the Vasa, which is, as far as I know still in a museum (but, good point, has anyone checked?). It is the Götheburg. From the ST...
Götheborg is (not surprisingly!) the first replica of an East Indiaman that has ever sailed in to London. The ship gave a eight shot salute from her iron cannons as she sailed through Tower Bridge. The salute was returned by HMS Belfast firing - a perhaps even more astonishing first as it is the first time since her berthing in London that she has done so. Then Götheborg continued into London Pool.
So maybe the Cutty Sark was shot by friendly fire?
― Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)
Cutty's ark was burned down by Gawd himself, since He didn't order one like He did with Noah.

Anyway, no it's not the Vasa, which is, as far as I know still in a museum
yes, it is, it's in a museum in Stockholm - I've visited it. It's actually the most-visited museum in the whole of Scandanavia. There's no way the Vasa can ever be refloated. It has to be kept in the dark and sprayed with water to stop it crumbling away. Bear in mind that it sunk (on its maiden voyage iirc) and had to be dredged out of Stockholm harbour many years later.
― Grandpont Genie, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)
when i turned on the radio this morning I thought that it was the Belfast that had caught fire on a/c of the reporter erroneously referring to a "historic ship near Tower Bridge".
