Steven Erikson's fantasy saga - read the 1st book, does it get better ? So far it beats George RR Martin and Bakker IMHO as it seems full of possibility, weirdness and a different take on fantasy cliches. Bot it rips off the Black Company bigstyle............

I couldn't finish the first one. it was original, sure, but the pacing was terrible and the plot was way too convoluted.

finished the first one. enjoyed it, but it didn't blow my mind like i was hoping.
someone was raving about them on one of the fantasy threads (chap? hi dere?) and i think they said that the series got better as it went along. can we confirm before i make my decision to purchase second or write series off?

basically they improve up through either 4 or 5, which is kind of balls-out WAU amazing, then settle back into a comfortable "you'll enjoy this if you've come this far in the series" groove

Essentially how much you'll enjoy the series rests on how okay you are with the idea that Erikson is much more interested in showing you how magic effects his world than in explaining how people do it, at least until pivotal book 4 or 5 at which point I basically went "okay that is awesome and you would have to do the literary equivalent of kicking me in the nuts to make me stop reading these books"

that's pretty comprehensive as a recommendation. cheers.

And now the tribute album, kinda

Presumably you won't be able to understand half of what's going on musically until they release a few more volumes in a series.
