grady, is Hawaii more difficult/expensive to live in than New York?
Curious.

i have never lived in new york, so i really couldn't say. but coming from chicago and having friends that live in NY, i'd say Hawaii is more difficult and NY is (slightly) more expensive.

as in the job market is tougher. unemployment is low, but when you factor cost of living into the job market, its rough.

So if I was ever gonna try to move to Hawaii, it's about getting a job before packing the van, eh?
It's always been kind of an errant dream, but I've never had any idea waht it might entail.

do you love living in NYC?

not that my opinion really matters--i grew up in NJ and spent a lot of time in NYC, and i lived in hilo (on the big island--poor and semi-rural) for about 3 1/2 months when i was 18, and i loved it but i never would have wanted to stay there permanently. it was way too suffocating for me--i dont know if growing up w/in an hour of two big cities made me feel more claustrophobic, but there's something weird about knowing that everywhere you can go via car exists within an hour's drive and if you ever want to go to a big city you need to fly. im sure living on oahu is different, but honolulu isnt exactly NY... all that being said i would love to live in hawaii for the short-term, i just dont know that i could deal with it long-term.

just for a few days, and it was mostly business so i never really left waikaloa. i want to go back and get over to the hilo side and see some hott lavaa too.

lets get some people together and rent this placefor a week.

but yeah man hilo is great! its pretty small but theres a $1 movie theater and a great farmer's market every sunday. volcanoes is reallllly incredible--like visiting an alien planet. my favorite part of living there was how excited all my neighbors got when it snowed on kilauea--i drove up with one of them in his pickup to bring home a truck bed full of dirty snow to throw at his kids. also there's a pretty good library. and theres a japanese place that was great but i cant really remember where it was.

i do love new york; it's really a pipe dream. for th' future.

then come here on an extended vacation, or some kind of employment with an end date, ie: 1-2 years.

that would be my best advice. because you will miss the city real bad after a few months.

but what do i know?

did you know the big HO kicked it just this past April? i was going to go to his funeral but i didnt. i was going to start an RIP thread but i didn't. i did just eat at the Don Ho restaurant a few weeks ago. its overpriced.

Like Martin Denny, he once had a residency at the hotel where I now work.

BIG HO aka the kahunasinger

Forks, a good friend of mine wound up living in Honolulu for a while and wasn't too happy there - granted this was partly because of her marital situation, which was also the reason she was stuck there in first place. But yeah, cultural options are limited, living ain't cheap, and everything that isn't Hawaii is very far away. The seafood/sushi is supposed to be fantastic though.

i worked with a girl in rochester whose husband was stationed in hawaii and she left and went and lived there with him but after a few months ended up moving back to rochester because she didn't like living there. maybe it was military living? i don't know, but there's gotta be something weird going on when someone choses to live with their inlaws in rochester and work at a crappy job than live in hawaii with their husband and not work.

Honolulu has NY/LA similar cost of living but the kicker is the wage index is like 65% of those cities.

I was at Kahala Resort a few weeks ago, and they have a wall-of-fame of all the famous people who have stayed there. It's quite an impressive collection of famous peeps going back several decades. It's kind of odd though, because they'll be a picture of Prince Charles, Ronald Reagan, Jack Welch, and Jordan Knight all lined up. I was wondering if they take down pictures of then famous, now forgotten celebs.
