ailsa in London, Sunday afternoon FAP at the Duke of York (Holborn) on June 10th

Right, so, I'm back in London for a couple of days, ostensibly to go to a wedding reception in Soho on the Saturday night. I might be around for small amounts of moderate drinking in the afternoon, but feel in view of the late night stretching ahead of me, that a Sunday lunch (food and/or liquid variety) would be a better idea before I send myself back home again.

So, yeah, it'd be good to see folks, if you're around. If not, recommendations of good eating places around Covent Garden/Holborn/Soho would also be appreciated.

Find it here...

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Abeno on Coptic St for Okonomi-yaki, japanese drunk food pancakes
The New Seoul on Clerkenwell Rd for amazing Korean
Medcalf on Exmouth market for excellent british/french
There is a new British place on St John st I have not tried yet but the advertise a breakfast martini and I want to find out what that is.

Sunday lunch would be good, I could get back to town for that. the Norfolk Arms on Leigh st may be appropriate for that. Are you flying or on the train?

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Breakfast martini = gin, cointreau, fresh lemon, marmalade.

aldo, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

sausage, bacon, beans, vermouth, fried eggs.

ken c, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

want, either version

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Breakfast martini sounds like something I could go for. In any variety.

I'm flying - home out of City at 7.40 on the Sunday.

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

are you around on the Friday, or flyin' in on Saturday?

Dr.C, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

Sunday afternoon drinkin' is go then, you'd want to be near the central/jubillee/DLR though.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

If sunny then outdoors is important I think.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Flying in on Saturday, Dr C so no Friday drinking for me. Also I don't think Neil'd appreciate another trip turning into a massive drinking session, hence suggestion of Sunday lunch as that's something we'd have to do anyway.

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, that's a shame, as ever I'm kinda booked up Sat/Sun - you'll have to come down for longer than just Sat/Sun sometime! Shame yr not around for the gig weekend too.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe sunday lunch at edinboro castle, with brothers cider and scrabble.

ken c, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

I will be down August Bank Holiday weekend for some twee shambling picnicky pre-ILX mentalist bollocks (see Are you, or have you ever been, a member of sinister? for details), so get yer diary in order now, Dr C.

xpost, mmm, brothers cider. mmm scrabble. Hang on, you're not even going to be there!

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

That would not be a bad idea, their sunday lunch is pretty good and outside spacious, however not too convenient for city airport.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno if twee shambling picknicky stuff is my kinda thing.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Steal their lunchmoney.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

I meant I'll be down the whole weekend for that reason, not that you were to come and be twee with us...

Ed, Edinboro Castle is OK, because we could get the Northern Line to Bank then change to DLR, yes? (or is there still work going on at the weekends)

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure about that weekend's engineering, however, this weekend all the nothern line engineering is north of camden.

I am in favour of this plan.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Nope, just looked at tfl website, scrap that, the Northern Line'll be closed that weekend between Camden and Kennington via Bank. Bugger.

Plan B - somewhere on teh Central Line please.

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

bum, let me do some divining

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

x-post Ailsa- oh right, yes I see. Will make a note.

Didn't mean to be disparaging about picknicky thing btw, if it came across that way.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Gunmakers, (near Chancery Lane) does a great sunday lunch but has no outside.

Medcalf on exmouth market, you can sit outside and get a phenomenal Sunday lunch, but is pricey and one would have to book.

Trying to think what would be possible round spitalfields/hoxditch.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Also the little Duke (of York) is good for chancery lane, has good food and has a little outside space.

Ed, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'll probably be free for Sunday lunch that day! And central line is good cos I can get a train to Liverpool St that takes 18 minutes.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

hi dere. i haf theatre to go to on the evening, but am free in the afternoon :)

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

damn i will be in paris so cannot sqabble with ailasa in person! why coyuldn't you come down the next weekend?

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa would love a pint with you and the mr! Sadly not to be. Come over here soon yeah?

kv_nol, Thursday, 31 May 2007 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

By the way: why is it faP and not faD (a drink) or faB (a beer) ? "Pint" always makes my brain think of milk, and when the thread title is "(lady's name) FAP?" I always have to stop myself from replying "why, are you lactating?" :-(

StanM, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

i can't help but recommend here for sunday lunch: http://www.myspace.com/theoldepeculiar

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

I vote duke.

G00blar, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what Carsmile is going to see.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

by theatre he means cockfightin'

blueski, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

somewhere within a 20 minute bikeride of the rfh would be nice since i may have to nip up and down there 3 times on that day.

also YAY!

also this time i will be sober, at least at the beginning.

emsk, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

We really ought to organise a cockfight one day.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Shiver me timbers! Basil Brush has taken to the high seas!

Basil and his all-star supporting cast go on a swashbuckling boom-tastic adventure on the deserted tropical island of Coco-Loco to search for the precious lost treasure “The Golden Jelly Baby”!

With buckets of audience participation, join in the treasure hunt with singing and dancing, games, magic and loads of laughs!
But keep an eye out for the Pirates – Ooh Arrrrr!
This year’s must-see treat for Basil fans old and new! A great giggle for all the family!
Why do pirates always have a bar of soap? So when they’re shipwrecked they can wash themselves ashore!
Ha Ha! Boom Boom!

Tickets: £12 adults, £10 kids, Family ticket £42

PJ Miller, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yay people!

Kate, I already discussed with you the logistics of Al changing the date of his wedding to fit in with ilxorpalooza. I don't think it's a goer. I could squabble more with you on ILX to make up for it? :-)

Right, people, PUB! Criteria: does food. is cheap. is on central line. Get to it, steering group!

Also, StanM is weird. You Europeans and your metric alcohol.

ailsa, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hang on, I could do Central/District to Monument or Tower Hill/Gateway instead, couldn't I?

ailsa, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

i'm going to a birthday party that involves rounders on primrose hill and then drinks in the union tavern on sat the 9th...any overlap possible? sunday is probably taken up with car boot sale and other moving shenanigans. but would be nice to see ailsa while she's here...

colette, Thursday, 31 May 2007 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

Bump!

(colette, I have no idea what I'm doing on the Saturday at all yet, but if I sort something, I shall let you know - be good to see you before you disappear off)

ailsa, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

seeing as no one else has expressed an opinion shall we say the little duke?

Ed, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

is that where we went before, where we met the climate change denier? wasn't cheap, or food wasn't anyway. don't remember drinks prices but i was spinning in the fresh delirium of being paid in actual money iirc.

emsk, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

no that was the gunmakers

Ed, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

This one? Looks OK to me. Is it not a bit of a trek for Emsk from RFH?

http://fancyapint.com/pubs/pub340.html

Is anyone else coming out?

ailsa, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

tis the one, Emsk'll be on a bike and I can cover that distance in well under 10 minutes. I can look at places round the aldwych but they won't be as nice and maybe much more closed

Ed, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, looks fine to me.

ailsa, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

aye

emsk, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

my favorite pub, innit.

G00blar, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I will come if deadline is passed.

suzy, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

D'oh! Just reminded my cousin is visiting on Sunday, wants to be 'shown around' town. Doubt that means the duke.

G00blar, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

it's in town, what's the problem ;)

i am unsure what i am doing sunday afternoon yet, possibly facing a big wall of ruin...

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Walk from the British museum to St Pauls, and oh, isn't this a nice little pub about halfway, shall we stop for refreshment?

Ed, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

the theatre i am going to see it this:

http://www.artsadmin.co.uk/projects/project.php?id=165

mmmm, lovely forced ents...

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Will see what I can do; just gonna be more difficult than the relaxed sunday i was picturing.

G00blar, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

How many cousins do you have, Goobs?

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Too many for wedding planning, that's for sure.

G00blar, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

I am in London on Saturday! I have a spare ticket for a gig if anyone is interested! It is in the afternoon! In Brixton! Exclamation marks!

(Apologies for thread hijack, it would be nice to have drinks with Ailsa maybe if I can make it to wherever people may be on the Saturday......)

tissp, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

tissp, what and where is gig? I have a Saturday to fill with stuff.

ailsa, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's "An Afternoon With The Broken Family Band" at the Windmill in Brixton (doors are 3pm). Unfortunately we only have one ticket and it's sold out, so I dunno if this would be problematic...

tissp, Thursday, 7 June 2007 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Carsmile meant lovely forced entries there.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 7 June 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Also on Saturday night, I think I may be at Spiral Scratch if anyone is interested

tissp, Friday, 8 June 2007 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

ailsa, there is this on all weekend:

http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/overture/

free
nice
was down there last night and there was some spookyass choir floating down the thames all lit up red and blue and purple and singing in a language i didn't understand being broadcast to speakers along the sides of the river and on the bridges. i'm really hoping they were practising for something this weekend cos it was awesome.

emsk, Friday, 8 June 2007 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Cor, some of that looks fantastic. Think I might be around there for some time on Saturday. Cheers Emsk.

See some of you on Sunday then!

ailsa, Friday, 8 June 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

please clarify 'afternoon'.

koogs, Friday, 8 June 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

The bit after noon (yay pedantry). I dunno? 2 o'clockish? That's when I think I might be there.

ailsa, Friday, 8 June 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers people (Suzy, Ed, Colonel Poo, Emsk) for a very pleasant afternoon. We made it to the airport with plenty time to spare, but there was a huge bus-related panic which nearly put paid to our marriage as I had to put up with a whole bunch of "told you we should have left earlier, you shouldn't have had that last pint" etc etc, and all my "don't worry about it, it'll be fine, in fact why don't YOU just get off and go straight to the airport yourself from here and I'll go get the bags and follow you out and PROVE that it can be done in time" wasn't going down too well. But we made it. With time to spare. Hurrah!

Emsk, I PROMISE next time I come to London I'll try not to be leaving a pub just as you arrive :-/

ailsa, Monday, 11 June 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

i was at work all afternoon. missed friday's, saturday's(?) and sunday's get togethers. worst thing was not really being able to do anything whilst i was here...

koogs, Monday, 11 June 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

next time i will not spend half the day on a sofa in camden reading bloody grazia and eating lollies before, like, looking at my watch :/
