Another Tiny Nail In The NYC Coffin: Evergreen Video Closing

Couldn't find the NYC Video Stores thread so here it is: what's possibly NYC's finest movie rental spot is going away for good at the end of the month. I found this out yesterday as I went in for my going-on-two-months-now weekend rental of obscure noir and Mexican Bunuel movies. The person behind the counter didn't state a reason but at this point why even ask. The owner's supposedly keeping all- or most - of the stock which I hope means that incredible stash of movies will pop up again somewhere nearby in the future.

Where else (besides Kim's) to find, say, Rossellini's made-for-TV historical bios or mindblowing '70s Argentine films with hilariously oversized subtitles? NYC, I love ya -- but F*** You.

i was impressed with the noir selection at film noir video on bedford near manhattan ave (right by the nassau g station). it's an odd little store, run by a nice polish hipster guy, with a modest selection of new releases and the rest of the space devoted to noir and horror/exploitation. not in evergreen's league, but if the location is at all convenient to you then you should check it out.

I still haven't found a replacement for tLA. Looks increasingly like gotta be Kim's. Do they have a memb fee?

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

it's been a long time since i got my membership there, but i think the fee is in the form of a hold on your credit card.

lauren, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

(which, i think, is how tla operated.)

lauren, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Except that TLA could run debit cards as well. Kim's cannot: you need a credit card unattached to a bank or $150 cash deposit.

bigger nail in NYC coffin: cops on segways.

Yeah, when I found out about this I couldn't find the bricks and mortar video thread either so by some bizarre logic I revived the Coliseum Books thread and posted on there. I loved Evergreen Video, my biggest Evergreen 'events' being renting the complete Heimat I and II from them.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 2 June 2007 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I never made it through Heimat. :/

C0L1N B..., Saturday, 2 June 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Most bizarre thing about the Kim's membership: after I stopped working there and had to get a proper membership, I tried to put down a cash deposit using a debit card, and was told that wasn't possible. And I explained, you know: I'm not trying to start the membership on this card; I just want you to charge the cash deposit off of it; I know you can do that, because I pay for purchases/rentals here with a debit card all the time. And yet ... no, not possible?

On the plus side, Mr. Kim's film would appear to available at Kim's locations now. And once you've seen Mr. Kim, it's difficult not to be curious about his film.

Thanks for the recommendation upthread, Lauren. Unfortunately, W'Burg's not local for me + I work a block from Evergreen. Still sad...

i didn't know the TLA had closed. man, i am so lucky that the flagship store has been 5 minutes from my parents' house since i was 6.

I'm pretty sure they're still open in Philadelphia--they just closed the New York store.

http://www.greencine.com

Netflix with more obscure selections.

dan selzer, Sunday, 3 June 2007 03:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Let's face it: movies were meant to be seen in theaters.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 3 June 2007 09:01 (sixteen years ago) link

no, I know they're still open in Philly. people around here swear by it. all the other stores have gone out of business, for the most part. in fact, i'm going to roll a j and go there this afternoon to pick up Apocalyto and some other selections.

is the one in san fran still open? maybe the super gay selection there would keep it more afloat in such a city.

cinema is meant for theaters, movies are base you cretin

sanskrit, Sunday, 3 June 2007 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

If you want to profit from this, you can buy their new Criterions at a slight discount.

They've purged the VHSs and are selling (mostly recent) DVDs for $10.

So all that's left now is Kim's?

Or was Kim's closed a while back too, due to legal issues

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 1 October 2007 12:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I finally joined Kim's.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I may have to go back after a long hiatus.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I used to belong to the one on Bleecker Street.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

two good stores still in greenpoint: photoplay and film noir. the former moved recently into a new, larger space which is nice to see what with other indie stores folding.

lauren, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:46 (sixteen years ago) link

four years pass...

another one bites it. This was my go-to place for stuff like that early-00s Japanese film Eureka:
