The best crisps in the world are Ready Salted. They are part of what has made Britain great. In moving to stupid non Ready Salted crisps, the English (and Scots (and I suppose we should mention the Welsh as well)) are betraying their heritage, their culture, their very genes. If the men of Waterloo had known what crisp related travesties would one day be visited upon the nation they would have thrown down their muskets and cried "Vive Napoleon" to a man - for a Britain without Ready Salted crisps is not a Britain worth defending, nor is it really Britain at all, just some stupid island off the coast of Europe.

So ready salted crisps, yum yum.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love ready salted crisps the way visitors to America love waffle bars.

And our american friends call crisps chips. Their version of crisps is sad and pathetic.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unyums ahoy ahoy

mark s, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My genes are smokey bacon.

Tim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Certain Irish-run London pubs do a roaring trade in tasty Tayto products also, DV, showing that you chaps are no slouches when it comes to the world of the crisp.

Tim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was about to say, another endless crisps thread? DV, god can tell you what's been done. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmm, Tayto.

Every great country should have its own nice crisps.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got a nice big multipack of Hula Hoops which I am v happy about as I haven't had a packet of crisps for MONTHS.

DG, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oo there's a pub here that has Tayto chips on the counter, I've been finding the name hilarious for weeks now. Are you saying I should actually *eat* them?

Pyth, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am saying exactly that, but only if they don't stock Seabrooks or Walkers. Or Scampi Fries, num.

Tim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tayto crisps are very very good.

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CRISPY BACON HULA HOOPS. madness.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan: WHERE?

Tim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The collins canteen, and i'm sure country wide. BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.

I always imagine a sort of Al Murray character at the Hula Hoop factory on seeing presentation from the marketing ponces just shaking his head in disbelief. "Crispy Bacon! It's just not right. Salted. Always has been, always will be. No need to mess around with all these elaborate new flavours. it's not NATURAL I tell you", etc

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am an American and have never heard the term "waffle bar" in my life. Seriously.

Sean, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, I'll try them out on Wednesday and report back after. If you imaginary interweb types steer me wrong, there'll be hell to pay. And Tim I'll never bring you duty-free booze again EVAH.

Pyth, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ulp!

Tim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can you still get those plain crisps with some salt wrapped in a twist of blue paper, so that you can shake your own salt in? Most of the salt went on the first crisp, num.

Old Time Crisp Eater, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whatever happened to Spring Onion Tayto's? They were delish. Burger Bytes, Barbeque Hula Hoops, Rancheros were nice, they aren't as salty any more tho'. DV: Do u remember Barry's Gloves? Sausage and Tomato flavour and some other weird concoctions. Lovely.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am an American and have never heard the term "waffle bar" in my life. Seriously.

It's one of those all-American things that we see a lot of in the films. You know, like grit barns, flossgates, anicurists, beer muffs, etc.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't remember Barry's Gloves, thank Tobit.

But I do remember Captain Crisps, a Judge Dredd rip-off who sold crisps.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DV is a man whose judgement I normally respect but he is bonkus if he thinks people like ready salted. How come I buy a box with 192 packets of crisps in, the last ones left in the box are always ready salted. Even beef tastes better.

Billy Dods, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember Monster Munch, which weren't actually crisps, rather some sort of wheat or corn snack type things. I used to eat them on the way home from swimming after school. I wish they would come back.

rainy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Monster Munch used to make me hyperactive. Some weirdness to do with a food colouring

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seabrooks; NUM. See thru packs! Crinkles! Indian Tandoori flavour! The bestest thing about seabrooks is their cavalier attitude toward puncutation conventions; they used to bill themselves as being

"MORE" than a "SNACK"

then when someone picked mister Seabrook up on the dogy quotes they duly changed it to

MORE - than a - SNACK

YAY VER 'BROOKS!

misterjones, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with plain crisps, they are my crisp of choice, as I've mentioned on another thread, my absolute favourites are those that you only get in Europe that taste merely of fried potato.

But Burgerbites = num!

chris, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Daf M is talking about SALT AND SHAKE! Which I think you can no longer get in singular paxx0r from ye shoppe, but can easily get in SIX PACKS (phw0ar) from Tescos.

GARLIC AND HERB SEABROOKS! THE MOST GARLIC YOU CAN EAT WITHOUT CHOWING DOWN hem hem on a CLOVE! Ace!!! Oh Seabrooks my heart belongs to thee. I am going to order a box of 48 from THE INTERWEB and set up a TUCK SHOP.

Sarah, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seabrooks fans near Oxford should try one of the newsagents on the Cowley Road, the big one nearest the Zodiac on the city centre side. Unfortunately all the carrier bag they gave me says is "more than a newsagent", so I can't tell you the name. I bought a bag of Canadian Ham Seabrooks after everyone here said how great they were. They were ok but did taste a bit like eating a chemistry set in places. (I think it was about 21p but I bought other stuff too so I'm not sure.)

Rebecca, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three months pass...
Tayto cheese and onion are really great and in lots of GB pubs and supermarkets. Or order them on the net. www.tayto.com

SH, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can u get em sent straight away? I'm starving!

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh shit! We call them chips in Australia too! I thought crisps was American and so have avoided calling them that. I must amend my ways. I like Lays Texas BBQ (despite the obvious American influence), Pringles plain ones (despite the American origin) and the health-food brand ones that are just potato and oil and NOTHING else. They rock, they are yummo.

I am partial to the occasional bag of Walker's French Fries, meself.

http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/prodpix/fri_2pk.gif

Only the ready salted ones, mind. Not the smelly cheese'n'onion or salt'n'vinegar imposters.

I am an American and have never heard the term "waffle bar" in my life. Seriously.

Years ago, there was a waffle bar across the street from UCI. You would order a waffle with your choice of fillings and get something that resembled a cross between a stuffed crepe and a waffle cone. They weren't bad actually - I was quite fond of the ham and green pepper one. Best of all they were incredibly inexpensive, typically between $2.50 and $3.50 depending on the fillings. The Czech couple who ran the place (it was called Wafra House) claimed that customized waffles were all the rage in Czechoslovakia (this was pre split).

In sheer Irvine irony, the other tenants in the Irvine Marketplace complained about Wafra House, claiming that their prices were too low (seriously) and after a year or so their lease wasn't renewed. I forget what other loser business took their place, but the space is now a game-oriented cyber cafe.

Walker's Posh Lime Flavoured Crisps, sorry, 'Gently Infused Lime & Thai Spices', are as luverly as they are poncey sounding.

(actually, looking on the back they are actually 'Gently Infused Lime & Thai Spices Flavour' which means they are all artificial. oh um.)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

As Christmas is on the way even more peculiar flavours of kettle crisps are on the shelves of my Tesco. Gammon and mustard, yum yum, Stilton and Apricot, hmm, will try this weekend.

Walker's Posh Lime Flavoured Crisps, sorry, 'Gently Infused Lime & Thai Spices', are as luverly as they are poncey sounding.

Are those the kind of sweet crisps that taste like lemon puff biscuits? No thanks. Tayto cheese and onion is the crisp for me. I do wish Mister Monkey would stop coming home from snack-buying trips with meat flavoured crisps. I hates 'em.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

i REALLY miss m&s smoky bacon and roquefort.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Every time I visit Northern Ireland I come home with hand luggage crammed with Taytos.

Discovered on recent trip to Germany: Zwiebli-Ringe! Onion ring corn snacks, but so much nicer than any onion ring crisps I've had over here (even the Taytos ones are, uh, not at all nice, unless you like paprika-flavoured polystyrene). I wish I'd brought some back with me but every packet I bought got eaten within minutes. Someone distribute them over here please.

Also enjoyed lately: fancy limited edition Thai-spice-flavoured Pringles, the only tube I've seen so far. What else is in the range and why can't I find any in the shops?

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

m&s smoky bacon and roquefort.

those sound amazing. i was up in the North, near Scunthorpe last spring, and at a gas station i had to buy Lamb & Mint crisps. freaked out all the other americans in the car and i even made it 2/3 through the bag.

i REALLY miss m&s smoky bacon and roquefort.

That does sound good.

I'm kind of fond of Miss Vickie's JalapeƱo chips but my favorite at the moment is this

http://www.snackaisle.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/kkpepper.jpg

Salt and Pepper sounds boring but because it's not overpoweringly flavored it has a multilayered, nuanced taste that's addictive.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

m white otm about salt and pepper kettle chips.

search: kettle chips, sainsbury's thai chilli, wheat crunchies, mccoys

destroy: WALKERS (too thin, too flavourless, too greasy, generally disgusting)

Rebecca, the heresy! Northern Ireland Taytos are totally different to Republic of Ireland Taytos!

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Great, now I have an image of N.I. Taytos provocatively marching through neighborhoods where they're not welcome.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

the bacon/roquefort ones are so good because they actually taste a little bit like bacon/roquefort. i find that most imaginatively-flavored crisps end up tasting like spicy msg, and the disappointment can be crushing. i had SUCH high hopes for tesco's limited xmas edition brie and cranberry flavor.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

Rebecca, the heresy! Northern Ireland Taytos are totally different to Republic of Ireland Taytos!

Are they? Oh dear. I've never had any from the Republic so I don't know what I'm missing. Different company or just a different recipe?

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

The first thing I saw on entering the terminal last time I arrived at Belfast International was a giant poster declaring that 70% of people in NI prefer Walkers, which amused me. Signs saying "welcome to Belfast", "this way to customs", etc = much less important than an advert (no pictures or anything, just plain huge text) saying "our crisps are better than Taytos, honest".

This is possibly not amusing outside my head.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Have we not had enough of this snacktarian strife?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

I think they're a different company.

ROI Tayto

http://images.ciao.com/iuk/images/products/normal/140/Tayto_Cheese_Onion__5329140.jpg

NI Tayto

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but the ROI Tayto people claim to have invented cheese and onion crisps. I'm not saying that's true, but it's what they claim.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

N.I.

R.O.I.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like they are different companies, but how confusing - the mascot's similar, the logo's similar, their websites both proudly declare them to be 50 years old, but they were founded in different years by different people and neither site mentions the other.

I must try the REAL Taytos at some point.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 19 October 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

When my younger brother was welfare officer in Strathclyde students' union all those years ago, he used to organise meetings of the Irish society around my mother's visits, because she always brought a box of Tayto with her.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 20 October 2006 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

Walkers new 'Chilli and Lemon'. very spicy. almost unpleasantly so.

Crisps with black pepper = always classic.
