The R doesn't go through Jay Street/Borough Hall does it? Or maybe there's a transfer, through a tunnel or above ground with metrocard

Radio Boradman (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

Seems like the G to E transfer would be about the same if the transfer time were zero. Or under 5 minutes.

you could probably calculate the ~ideal trip~ by looking at time tables online

iatee, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

yes. even when it's *not* shuttling

mookieproof, Sunday, 18 March 2012 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

yeah looking at timetables the g + e without the transfer or the wait is already prob a tad over 30, whereas the f is under 40. def the f.

"Signal Problems"

Sorry

My Elusive Memes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

Man that sucks.

I saw something in Metro or AM today about how they're going to permanently extend the G to those southern stops, which is good news. Really they should consider building another brooklyn-queens line now that brooklyn is such a *destination*

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

an express line that runs into Manhattan on or near the current M line (the part that goes to Middle Village) would be really nice too

hahaha stop it

mookieproof, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

u mad cause I see possibilities where you see only hopelessness

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw they actually did manage to improve the L train a lot lately in spite of bumps. I'm no longer crushed every morning.

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

I found out about the 7 problems @ times square and took the q32 instead. actually ran into my roommate on the street and saved him a lot of headache.

iatee, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

I'm free! My usual half-hour trip took almost an hour and a half, but the real tragedy is that i missed my yoga class.

They should bring the G back to Forest Hills...though I have to admit the 7 to the g has been working for me lately.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

in terms of need there are tons of places that need subways to manhattan more than we need another brooklyn-queens line, but the tribororx might happen some day just cause it could be cheap:

xp

iatee, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the g to forest hills doesn't really help us anyway. they are actually bringing back some services that were cut w/ the last massacre but that probably won't be one of them.

God today was terrible. I knew the 7 was having problems when i saw the huge crush of people on the platform at times sq so schlepped over to the e, which was filled with all the overflow 7 train commuters. The train kept stopping every 5 seconds. Then when we finally got to Roosevelt, the bus lines were massive (again, abandoned 7 trainers) so I walked home and melted as I walked--wrong day to swing by trader joes and to have my laptop on me...

rayuela, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

Oh how long is the q32 ride from ts to wherever u took it to? Never thought abt that. Where in times sq does the q32 stop??

rayuela, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

it doesn't stop at times sq, it starts next to penn station on 32nd then goes east then down madison. the amount of time it takes depends on whether it's rush hour or not, but maybe 30 mins to get to where I live in sunnyside?

iatee, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

My Elusive Memes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

actually it's kind of amazing how much of queens is nowhere near a subway -- are there historical reasons for that, like did residents oppose it?

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

well there's not really just one answer, that's the answer w/r/t certain late 20th century proposals in queens, but the big reason is that the ind 2nd system was shelved due to the depression. after that there weren't really any megaprojects anywhere, including manhattan.

today's posts = I will move to the Pacific NW ahead of Queens.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:46 (eleven years ago) link

haha there is seriously no one on ilx who would be a worse politician, I like activism tho

ian, there's a medium-length work online that's quite thorough w/ the history but not long enough to just be boring technical stuff, I'm trying to find it

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 03:48 (eleven years ago) link

as long as Morbz is around, i think that that is just not true.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:01 (eleven years ago) link

that's the tough thing about being a pol or a pop star, you have to appeal to ... never mind

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link

you'd blow it by mandating that TMC run non-stop Jerry Lewis movie marathons, and that's just for starters.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

def want child-free cars on the trains

(that's actually a buncha stuff and not one piece, but in any case that site has everything you'd want)

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't the G still have by far the lowest ridership?

Also why are there stops every 4 blocks on the 1 train and yet they can't build a single fucking station btwn Houston and 14th on the East side??

alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link

14 blocks is an okay distance between stations. furthest someone would have to walk is like 1/3 a mile, and even then that's going to be rare - like 1/14 people. in return every single person who takes that train anywhere gets a faster trip. there is one abandoned station for the 1 train and one for the 6, in both cases cause they determined people could just walk from the next station. if the 1 were being built today it wouldn't look like it does but if they were built today they wouldn't be built instead of being built.

the g is always going to have the lowest ridership. people take the train to work and work is manhattan.

iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:46 (eleven years ago) link

err to clarify 'takes that train' was a reference to the future-future 2nd avenue segment that will be built from houston to 14th on the east side. there won't be any other train / station in that area in our lifetimes, nor in alphabet city. maybe some crazy light-rail project if we pray.

also another thing worth remembering is that the 2nd and 3rd ave els provided service to that part of town back when the subways were being built. so when you're thinkin 'why is there nothing here', there was, it just went away.

also I realized there are other abandoned stations for the 6 train but in my head I was thinking only grid-manhattan

err I'm going to bed
