I was on the G to Greenpoint right before the one that derailed. Phew

after weeks of incapacity, i finally tried a subway trip to acclimate to motion and see how difficult going to a doctor tomorrow will be
random dude comes on the f train in rush hour splays out on a bench and starts jerking off

when i gave him a "what the fuck?" look he said "don't look at me homeboy"
and it's like, i think you give up the right to complain about people staring at you when you masturbate in public
fairly sure that's in the constitution

why we're a capital of the world, as the Blaze said yesterday.

anyone tried the Hudson Yards 7 terminal yet? that got done "fast," huh?

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 03:24 (eight years ago) link

what's been wrong w u forks? :(

I work in the Starrett-Lehigh building (11th and 26th) so the hudson yards is now the closest stop to my work. I did it yesterday and today. (Lorimer G to Court Sq 7 to Hudson yds).

The station itself is nice, idk if they are planning shops or anything but rn it's basically big and empty. And it's hella deep-- the escalator to the lobby level is one of the longest and steepest I've been on.

If you're headed inland you can exit right into civilization on 10th etc; as for me the walk down 11th from 34th to 26th is boring and bleak, all construction with no real sidewalks, just those safety divider things.

A creep on the 7 this morning got some of his sandwich on my leg. But better mayo than 'mayo' (cf forks)

Jon: spinal injury that started as a herniated disc in my neck then led to what's been diagnosed as a postdural puncture headache and three weeks of debilitating migraines. vaguely more manageable now but can't really comfortably go out of the house yet. seeing a neurologist today.

funny you should ask, it's the one thing i did the most while i was convalescing! played through 2/3 of scholar of the first sin lying flat on the couch in a haze of metallic pain as a means to distract.

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

btw forks there is now a pilot program to get "showtime" onto the sidewalks anfd off the trains.

7 will now be the closest train to the Eagle leather bar.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link

i would be fine with showtime on the sidewalk as long as it doesn't BLOCK the sidewalks
i love b-boying; i just can't handle people relentlessly fucking with me

I work in the Starrett-Lehigh building

I love that building!

chinavision!, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 18:08 (eight years ago) link

I also checked out the new station. The escalators were disconcerting. The angle of the ribbing on the sides and the small patch of floor that's visible made it feel like I was headed straight down.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 18:10 (eight years ago) link

you don't get the same effect on the long ones in london because they have advertising oriented horizontally

but on this one there's no advertising and the tiling is parallel to the escalator, not to the horizon, so it's weird!

Now I wonder if they could find a way to solve the Amtrak-track stampedes, something about the layout of that waiting area is just so conducive to awfulness. But ultimately I guess you have to announce a track and then have people line up and that's the way it is.

MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast took to the podium Friday as well, promising to "re-invision" 30 subway stations by 2020. The MTA plans to make these stations "cleaner, brighter... easier to navigate, with better and more intuitive wayfinding, as well as a modernized look and feel." This means more On The Go touch screens, new signage, new lighting.

Rather than close these stations on nights and weekends to accomplish this "renewal"β€”the Governor described the current approach as "piecemeal"β€”the MTA will shut down entire stations for an average six to twelve-months per station to expedite renovations. Will your neighborhood's subway station be one of them?

My local stop is on there and I see zero reason to renovate it. So many better things the MTA could do with the money.

riders waiting for their trains will be able to takes calls and connect to the Internet at every underground station.

on the plus side, two extra cars for the G means that i will not have to haul ass as it comes into the station to meet it halfway down the platform

Cuomo sounded like a fucking crazy man last week, or a rich dad pretending to understand his kids' whims. "I want to listen to music, make a phone call... I've come to expect that."

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 19:36 (eight years ago) link

would bet money the "shut down for years" option is in some internal study only to provide a "porridge is too cold" benchmark of how long it would take if they did that, versus the more realistic options that would actually be pursued. but yeah cuomo's shit re: transit is forehead-slappingly annoying as always. at least he didn't propose anything as outright stupid and destructive as last year's LGA airtrain scheme, but the idea that his little cosmetic lifestyle adjustments corresponded to a Moses-like shaping of infrastructure and use for riders was laughable.

yesterday morning my stop on the F/G was more crowded than i'd ever seen it . . . then two packed F trains went by without stopping

at least when all the stations have cell and wifi i can text my boss to tell him i'll be half an hour late

Often, a can or a piece of aluminum foil is enough to fool a track circuit. β€œSomething as simple as that can create a Conga line of trains,” Habersham says.

This is adorable. Or would be if it weren't infuriating.
