Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it depends on the poll; really. Sometimes I vote, sometimes I don't.

nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

I rarely vote because while they're not the death of ilx, they're generally boring as fuck - who gives a shit what the best song on some canonical album is? not me

J0hn D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

That'd be the "give a shit" option then. But there are TWELVE THOUSAND ilxors out there (er maybe); the most popular polls only get 100 votes. Something's gotta give! Who are the shirkers, the free-riders, the disenfranchised, the bored?

ledge, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

the point of the best polls isn't really the result, john d.

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it ain't the picking either. I don't care one way or the other. I prefer just yapping away.

nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

I rarely vote for ILM polls, because they tend to be about rock bands I know little about.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

A whole ton, probably most, threads only have a handful of posters per thread as well though.

if there is a single vote in this poll, ilx will implode in a poof of logical impossibility

Just got offed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

1,2,4

maybe 5 also

I have not voted in this poll because it's hard to pick one answer, and also because I'm not sure if 1 and 5 mean the same thing

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think that if ILX was going to implode in a poof of logical impossibility it would've happened by now

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

1 = no knowledge
5 = no interest

it took a lot of guts for him to make such an uncharacteristically autobiographical post

But yeah, when it's said and done that's how people will summarise ILX

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

You forgot, has poll display turned off.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is a non-issues. Culture has been without clear definition for quite some time in the West. Current academic mainstays like Bhabha, Gilroy, Hall and Clifford tend to avoid delimiting the term. Likewise, Mark Slobin's book Subcultural Sounds, which has been at the centre of popular music studies over the last decade, rejects the attempt at definition:

"To pretend to a clarity of analysis of any musical grouping, moment, style, or context is to bypass this complexity for the sake of oversimplification."

Sorry to be off topic, but I thought this should be addressed.

acrobat, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

the point of the best polls isn't really the result, john d.

yeah I know, but I also don't have any interest in discussing: the best song on abbey road, the best song on sergeant pepper's, the best song on revolver, the best song on satanic majesties' request, the best song on ready to die, the best song on all eyez on me (surprisingly not a poll yet as far as I know), the best of the sinatra capitol albums, etc etc - beginning a discussion with "which is a the best of this list?" seems to be the least interesting way of leading off a conversation, and I do this that points of entry matter a lot. I'm pretty uninterested in where a conversation that begins "which song on this album is your favorite?" is going, with a few exceptions; ditto "which album by this artist is your favorite," etc etc etc. That hasn't stopped me from joining in from time to time, but, y'know, I also eat potato chips a good deal, I just don't pretend they're fine dining.

J0hn D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

"I do this" = should be "I do think"

libcrypt, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

IML polls are the 11th circle of hell.

Not untrue, but they do have their moments, like when UB40 beat out ABC, Human League etc and won the "best New Pop album".
