Not altogether obviously, but I seem seriously addicted to eating biscuits and chips and other rubbish at the moment and need to stop.

Try smoking instead?

G00blar, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:26 (sixteen years ago) link

How about a juicy piece of fruit or a nice healthy salad. 'Cause they really satisfy those fucking junk food cravings, right.

Carrot sticks? celery?

C J, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:41 (sixteen years ago) link

get married and divorced and start drinking a lot. or, just do something stupid to ignite some sort of shitty depression, and get drunk. you probably won't feel like eating then.

andi, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

hello! try this thread for ideas!

ken c, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Not buying them and having them in the hosue is often the best way. Biscuits etc are the kind of thing you eat when you're bored/ just because they're there and nice. If you're prepared to go to the shops to get it, then it's a justifiable craving and you should buy it and eat it. I do this with cheese.

Anna, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:48 (sixteen years ago) link

try and replace biscuits with toasted nutty cereal in either honey or with fruit. i like those poncey yogurt pot things a lot of places do now (pret etc.) but you can make your own easily.

chips is harder but i've found eating more protein foods tends to make me crave them less - or you can just go for baked potato more (i NEVER eat these anymore tho, daamn).

blueski, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:51 (sixteen years ago) link

If you're prepared to go to the shops to get it, then it's a justifiable craving and you should buy it and eat it.

it's like the calories you burned walking to and from the shop the bad food you bought puts back - so you haven't actually gained weight. definitely!

blueski, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:53 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost Drinking makes me want to eat though. Not having biscuits in the house is not an option. The kids would kill me and then steal my wallet to buy biscuits.

I like those yoghurty/granola things they have in EAT. But it's the going to EAT and just having that that is the problem. It makes me angry too, because I think really it's down to willpower and I should have more of it. It's pathetic really.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 23 August 2007 10:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Most cereals are as fattening as anything else if yr gonna snack on them like chips. It really is all about eating less, sadly.

Depression helped me lose a shitton of weight, but obviously thats no solution :/

this is really good advice, and is the reason my flat contains no chocolate, crisps*, biscuits or sugar. it's full of all manner of other crap, but hey, you've got to start somewhere. Also, no sugary cereals! Check your cornflakes packet, it's usually full of the damn stuff.

*actually i relented on that front last week but i'm regretting it now.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 23 August 2007 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, but like Ned says, it's different if you have kids in the house. Unless you just don't buy those things as part of the weekly shop, but give the kids money to buy them for themselves on an individual basis? It might reign them in a bit as well if they have to make a conscious decision to go to the shops every time they want something sweet, but at least you're not denying them. I don't know how practical this is, though, because I don't know how far you live from shops.

My nearest shop is a twenty minute walk away and I live in a village that's just too far for any fast-food place to deliver to. I have lost about 20 pounds just because of this.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 23 August 2007 11:12 (sixteen years ago) link

As you have the biscuit/crisp/piece of chocolate in your hand, before eating it ask yourself if you REALLY REALLY want it.

Also, if you find yourself craving sweets, make a cup of tea or get a glass of water then walk away and wait half an hour. If you're still craving it - eat it!

marianna lcl, Thursday, 23 August 2007 11:17 (sixteen years ago) link

As you have the biscuit/crisp/piece of chocolate in your hand, before eating it ask yourself if you REALLY REALLY want it...

... then say YES, and eat it like you mean it!

ken c, Thursday, 23 August 2007 11:24 (sixteen years ago) link

A couple of years ago I lost 2 1/2 stone on weigh watchers. Keeping track of what I was eating really made me realize how the biscuit/crisps etc. really add up. I loved WW though because you can really eat whatever you want - it's just about balance.

Boredom = weight gain for me so I do what Anna does and don't buy them, but also (because Londis is 1 minute away) I keep myself busy with something. Knitting is particularly good for keeping you concentrated on something and your hands busy.

Madchen, Thursday, 23 August 2007 12:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I suppose if you don't know how to knit, you could try wanking.

blueski, Thursday, 23 August 2007 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link

what you need to do is buy all the chips and cookies you can and eat them for like 5 days straight.

sunny successor, Thursday, 23 August 2007 13:29 (sixteen years ago) link

In the healthy snacks department, we've really been digging the heirloom cherry tomatoes this year. If you have any room for gardening, even container gardening, grow cherry tomatoes. Dozens of times this summer, my wife and I have wandered into the kitchen to find something to snack on, eaten a handful of tomatoes while we looked, and wandered back out happy and chipless.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 23 August 2007 13:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Become a lighthouse keeper on a remote coastline and omit to bring any biscuits, chips or rubbishy food. Do bring a good book. A very long good book.

Aimless, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Drink lots of water and non-sugar packed drinks like vegetable juice. Then when you feel like snacking out of boredom find something else to keep yourself busy. (easier said than done, I know)

Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I really try not to have any snack food around, it forces me to either cook and/or assemble a whole meal that will be filling and also keep me busy, or just decide "fuck it" and have a cigarette instead. That way I have lots of caloric intake left for beer.

Laurel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i wish there was something like cigarettes that wasn't smoking. i think the biggest thing keeping me from smoking is that i'm against corporate cultural domination. the next biggest thing is the health issue, obv. i like the whole idea of 5-10 min breaks throughout the day to do something enjoyable - that isn't harmful (e.g., smoking, eating junk food) or socially unacceptable in public (e.g., sex, massages) or detrimental to my workday (e.g., w33d, booze, long conversations abt tangential stuff)

anyway, yeah, no junk food in the house is the best idea. also, i think giving the kids an allowance for it is a good idea. you could even give yourself an allowance. knowing how much you're spending on junk food wld be pretty sobering, i bet.

also, cognitive behavioural therapy

rrrobyn, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i think the wanking is the best advice so far.

it's cardio vascular exercise as well as keeping your hands busy

ken c, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Exercise, then you won't want to eat so much crap.

Jordan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I sometimes have the same problem re: kids, so I usually try to buy stuff he likes and I don't. I've also been eating the hell out of blueberry applesauce because for whatever reason my brane thinks it's enough like candy that it satisfies my craving.

luna, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

socially unacceptable in public

Smoking is definitely headed this way.

For breaks I usually just get a soda and walk around outside a bit. On days when I don't go out for lunch or have meetings outside my building getting up from the monitors is U&K. (meaning: walk is good substitute for smoke break or snack.)

Ms Misery, Thursday, 23 August 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

oh i just figured out another thing that is a good break/distraction:
listening to a song or two that you really like and that y'know takes you away for a bit
like right now i'm listening to over the hills and far away and it is awesome

Buh, anyone who has worked in a grocery is going to hate me, but how I got to stop BUYING ricockulous snacks was: I would carry it around with me in the store and then stuff it somewhere it didn't belong. "This bag of miniature Almond Joys does not belong next to the barbecue sauce and mustard! Hahaha, SOMEONE is going to think this is the craaaaziest grocery store ever!" (Well, it wasn't so much about the toddler-level of comic sophistication as I got to ditch the item as impulsively as I picked it up, which is equally fun in its own way. For me.)

Back when I cared more and was committed to losing weight and also working out in every spare moment of my free time, I ate a low fat (never more than 25%) diet w/no convenience/snack foods every day except Fridays. On Fridays, I got to indulge the food fantasy I'd been having all week - chocolate or barbeque or crispy duck w/ plum sauce or cheesecake. Then it was back to beans and salads and lowfat plain yoghurt on baked potatoes. It worked for me for as long as I needed it to.
