RFI: finding a room in or near Dublin

Any ideas? I'm being kicked out of the country I'm in (not for crimes or anything, they just refused to extend my visa) and looks like I'll be heading to Ireland in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any experience in this?

yeah, you get a room with fifteen other people for about 600 euro per month.

i'm not an expert really, but you hear horror stories.

check out a site like www.daft.ie, if you don't know anyone that can do a bit more localised searching for you, i guess.

I think daft.ie is the main site people use, though as I still live at home I don't have that much great advice on this, only shame!

Keep this bumped tho as I'm sure Kv_nol or Accentmonkey would have some better tips here.

thanks, i will keep searching.

i've also been told "go back tomorrow and yell at the bureaucrats until they extend your visa," which i don't really see working but i guess i have to try. aaargh. i want to know what country i'll be in a month from now!

where are you getting kicked out of?

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:16 (sixteen years ago) link

greece. and the entire $#%@#%@# schengen zone at that.

Maria, www.daft.ie is your best bet. I'm afraid I don't know of anyone looking for a flatmate at the moment. That said, nearly all the colleges are back up and running so at least every place you see won't be competing with 100 odd students :) Have a set email ready to fire back to any adds put up. Also try gumtree.ie and ireland.com (iirc there used to be flats and things). Boards.ie could also be worth a look. What is schengen zone?

It's that mainland Europe visa agreement that stops each country from having to check your paperwork at the border.

Maria, I echo everyone's suggestion that you should check Daft.ie. I don't know anyone looking for a flatmate either, but I'll certainly keep an ear out for you.

Also, I'd be happy to help you out for a couple of nights if you need it. I live quite a long way out of Dublin, but at least you wouldn't be homeless.

Maria, can you not leave the schengen and re-enter (boat trip to cyprus or Train to Sofia/Istambul)

Ed, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 11:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks all...I don't even know if I'm going to Ireland now, I might be going to Turkey, but I have to wait to hear if I can do an internship-type thing there. Argh! That has definitely put a halt on the apartment-search. I appreciate the advice though, I may use it next week!

Ed, the Schengen rule is that once you enter, you can only spend 90 days in the zone out of the 180 days after your first entrance; leaving and reentering doesn't reset the clock. My 90 days will be up October 11, and I am pretty sure I can reenter in mid-December.

Okay actually it turns out I am going to Turkey after all. WEIRD. Thanks for the advice!

Maria, Thursday, 27 September 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Pure mental. I don't have a room in Turkey to offer you. But good luck.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha thanks. I am actually not too worried because I'm hoping to persuade the place I'll be sort-of-working to let me live in their housing, and until I get it worked out there's a cheap hostel run by Brits with single rooms I where I can stay. (I may beg your help in March though - that's when I now hope/expect/plan vaguely to be in Dublin.)

Maria, Thursday, 27 September 2007 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Good to hear. Start looking in Ireland Late Jan/early Feb to be sure. Revive thread and maybe someone here can help out.

kv_nol, Friday, 28 September 2007 08:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, don't forget we have that huge holiday in March which can sort of affect accommodation (certainly short-term accommodation).

accentmonkey, Friday, 28 September 2007 08:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i DID forget! hahaha!
