I wouldn't do it. Would you? It's like moving to a new town. Only....not.

i just couldn't be bothered to start again, to be honest - much like with my real friends :-)

I haven't come across a better board yet. And even if I did, all the memories would probably still keep me here.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)
there's always yahoo chat, when you need a break.

I come *here* for a break from juvenile insults, recurring topics and long-running spats on another message board!
― Forest Pines Mk2, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)
Railway Enthusiasts UK board gone downhill for reals
― blueski, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)
I think it's since they launched their sister board, Everything Enthusiasts UK.
― Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)
I moved here from another place, which had a long history of failed spin-off boards started as a result of inter-poster arguments/hookups/breakups. They were strange, strange people. Lots of anger and bitterness, and they never got my jokes. I'm actually quite funny, you know.
― C J, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)
i joined this one
― ken c, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)
They were strange, strange people
Definitely not like this place then.
― Dr.C, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)
I joined this one
I joined that one too.
Funnily enough, on the board I was talking about, one poster got banned from the entire site ostensibly because he only ever posted on the Everything Else board and not on any of the on-topic boards on the site.
― Forest Pines Mk2, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)
If it's fleeing assholishness/zings/negativity, trust me, most board go through this shit, unless it's supermoderated. And even then...
― nathalie, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)
There was a guitar site that I used to frequent occasionally, where the site founder used to ban people for minor transgressions and then try to force them to pay him $40 to be allowed to re-join. Minor transgressions included criticising any aspect of the board or basically having an opinion of any kind. The board was segmented by types of guitar and all the people on the bit of the board that I posted on left and founded their own board (OffsetGuitars.com) which is really great. It's pretty nerdy, but very informative and friendly.
On the other hand the Harmony Central guitar forums are occupied mainly by gun-totin', truck drivin' Texans who play guitar in 'worship bands' in church each Sunday. It's not the place for dry wit and controversial opinions. I don't bother with it any more, only as occasional amusement.
― Dr.C, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)
KSS forums on harmony central are similarly grim.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, there they ban people for minor progressions
― ken c, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)
Miner joke in 5..4..
― Mark G, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)
I used to frequent a different board, but it went through a major design overhaul and ended up looking like shit, so most of the posters left for another board. Everyone was there for a while, but it became stale to me and I left.
A few months later, someone I knew from that board recommended ILX to me, which I was unfamiliar with. I remember being really confused the first time I saw it, because I didn't know what "TS," C/D", and "POO" meant.
I grew to like ILX, though, so here I am (even if I rarely post). It's much better than the other forums I used to frequent. The discussions are funnier and more interesting.
So for me, classic.
― Nathan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)
I post sparsely on a small handful of boards rather than a lot on one. I get different things out of all of them. I've also never ever had an 'internet friend' in what I'd call a meaningful way (don't do MSN or AIM chatz, pretty much only use Myspace out of necessity)
― DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)
ILX FOR LIFE, BITCHEZ.
srsly: i have no real understanding of how i ended up here. it's sort of alext's fault, but only indirectly. i've taken lengthy breaks from it in the past but i can't imagine anything upsetting me so much that i get all OMG I MUST LEAVE, principally because, y'know, it's a fucking internet message board and it doesn't actually matter all that much, does it? don't get me wrong: i like ILX tremendously. but a sense of perspective is kinda helpful, i feel.
if i did ever quit or lose interest, though, i very much doubt i'd go anywhere else. hell, i barely have time to read this one.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't know what "TS," C/D", and "POO" meant
Good point Nathan - whilst I appreciated that a lot of interweb slang is common to all boards, each has its own argot too, and I am not sure that I have the patience to learn a new lot!
― Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)
grimly should be running the board this week, it would have helped a lot, you feel.
― darraghmac, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)
The things that piss me off about boards are universal between them, so why not stick with the funny one that doesn't have sigs and avatars or anything phpbb-y?
xpost o the thought. he'd only have spent his time trying to work out who started the Sub-Editors I Hate Them thread and banning everyone.
― stet, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

i spent a few seconds trying to imagine it, then my head started hurting and i went for a little lie-down in a darkened room.

ah! what news, my liege? THE NET DRAWS IN.

I look at a couple, but rarely tend to post, usually I just look for new release news. Band-specific fora tend to be boring, or jokey in a really lame way, or bunker-mentality kultist in my experience. Maybe bands I don't like have great forums though.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)
every now and then i'll google something and end up on (or follow referals back to) band fora, and they're rarely band-oriented threads. i guess communities can grow from something specialised like that, but it seems like an odd place to start for. actually what wouldn't? :-/
― Alan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)
Alan, yes - N£W 0rder 0nline. To be fair they are more than just a message board - they've got 2 tribute bands, have made two compilation CDs, organized a charity gig with Hooky DJing! They're also home of the N£w 0rder Vikings - a bunch of fans who have followed them all over the world, or well used to :(
I know some of them IRL, and don't check in more than once a week or so, but it's an ahem, interesting place. Some very, very, very obsessive fans there. Some have seen virtually every gig! I am obv a New Order lightweight, but occasionally swan in and remind them that I saw Joy Div 15 or so times :)
― Dr.C, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)
i used to post to alt.music.new-order and had occasional arguments with a1 j a rv is about NOOL; ie he would say: "this place is shite, you should all post on NOOL" and i'd say: "get to fuck." actually, we did nearly come to metaphorical blows ("is that a threat?" ISTR saying ... or was that him?) although it wasn't over that. it was probably over hooky's bass sound, or something. anyway: a decent bloke, but yeh, frighteningly obsessive.
for some reason, usenet band groups seemed less intense than web ones. i couldn't be fucked joining NOOL and having a shitey avatar and crappy newbie status etc, basically. also: after "get ready", my inclination to hang about anywhere discussing new order was somewhat reduced.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)
basically, before i pitched up here i posted on alt.music.new-order and uk.comp.sys.mac and, er, that was it. the latter was a really nice group, actually. some oddly ILX-ish personalities.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)
x-post Hehe - I know him, and I've met him many times. He's actually one the less obsessive ones in terms of discussing trivia and technical stuff. But he's the so called leader of the V1kings - drinking and fighting their way around the world. Have you seen what he looks like? If not it's exactly what you'd expect him to look like. (look at my Facebook 'friends'!)
― Dr.C, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)
i have, somehow, and i'm not sure how ... but yeh, he was precisely as i imagined :)

are there any other message boards out there like ilx in that there isnt a specific topic range.. i need a backup in case i have a hissy fit and quit ilx
― homosexual II, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)
I've never been a fan of hissy fits. This may be due to having a syster who is the Old Faithful of temper tantrums, every hour on the hour. She's sort of more chill now that she's going to waxing school.

www.panteraboard.com
― Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)
Suprisingly, not so much about Pantera.
I lurk around on spiritualized.com every so often, but signal-to-noise isn't that great and there's some idiot JavaScript thing going that makes it near impossible to open up threads in separate tabs.
I also lurk around on the boards for owners of Ford Thunderbirds (the retro ones from a couple years back) but they have the same problem that Dr. C noted with most guitar boards. (the TapeOp forums are pretty good though)
The best board I've seen for signal-to-noise the Wreckchasing aircraft archeology board.
