Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

it's too bad that West Village restaurant where the staff would sing the Maude theme to you on your birthday still isn't open. At least for Surmounter's sake.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha .

xcited to see rue down the line

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

"God'll get you for that one"

omg she is just too funny.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

she (allegedly) shat in betty white's dressing room because she hated her so much. whether that's classic or dud, i'll leave up to your discretion.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

i never ever want to believe this, it makes me sad, considering how beautiful their onscreen chemistry is, and how much i love both actresses.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

maude just spent a whole episode trying to get arrested for posession of marijuana to save a kid who was being sent to jail for 3 years for having a quarter of an ounce

Surmounter, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

When will the second season DVD come out dammit?!

Eric H., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

I believe this is the only show to have a character actually go through with an abortion. For that alone, it's awesome.

ENBB, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

no, there was that very special episode of punky brewster

gershy, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

Beatrice Arthur is a woman of class and distinction, not to mention enormous talent, and I will stand behind her any day rather than giving some nut

tremendoid, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

What season did she get the abortion?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Season 1 --

Maude had an abortion in November 1972, two months before the Roe v. Wade decision made abortion legal nationwide, and the episodes which dealt with the situation are probably the series' most famous and certainly its most controversial. Maude, at age 47, was crushed when she found herself pregnant, and everyone agreed with her that having a baby at her age was very risky and not a wise thing to happen. Her daughter, Carol, brought to her attention that abortion was now legal in New York state. After some soul-searching (and discussions with Walter, who agreed that raising a baby at their ages was not very wise), Maude tearfully decided at the end of the two-parter that abortion was probably the best choice. Noticing the wide controversy around the episode, CBS decided to rerun the episodes in August 1973, and members of the country's clergy reacted strongly to the decision. At least 30 stations dropped the show.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Series started Sept 12 '72, so it had to be within the first dozen episodes or so.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

the abortion episode is great.

the writing on this show is really smart and touching.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

so Florida's husband just tried to make her quit working for Maude. and they got in this whole conversation about how it's not a bad thing to be proud of hardworking black maids who support their families.

it was really a brilliantly acted scene.

Having never seen Maude before I've now rapidly consumed the first eight episodes. What an amazing show. Bea Arthur!! Holy Cow! She is unreal. I honestly had no idea. I couldn't help being reminded of Fawlty Towers with the insane and intense lead character who is the architect of her own misfortune, surrounded by beautifully written and acted foils.

The final moment of the episode where the Bill Ayers-style black leader finally shows up to Maude's now deserted fundraiser to be greeted with "Welcome to an evening with Maude" totally reminds me of Basil's absolute refusal to either admit defeat or admit to deceit.

But of course Maude is better than Fawlty Towers, I think because Maude herself is someone you wish was real, whereas Basil can thankfully only be fictional.

Middle-aged people *did* argue about FDR in the early '70s, though; it was their formative political experience. I heard them.

Marlene Warfield (later of Network) was on that show?
