Swap Shop, Number 73, Wide Awake Club, Wac90, On The Waterfront, Motormouth, What's Up Doc?, Going Live

There were loads of these. I can't remember them all. I remember the awkardly titled "8:15 from Manchester" being fairly well clued up, with the Inspiral Carpets, Beats International and St Etienne getting played quite a lot. They had a feature called Rap Attack whihc had kids coming on and doing raps about random stuff. I liked it when I was about 9.

TISWAS

onimo, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Hen Fap's Half Hour

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^^ second dis

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

It was hosted by Anthony H Wilson and a small latex squirrel puppet called "Ashley".

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

Some rubbish kids morning magazine shows: Scratchy and Co, Fully Booked with Morag the Cow and Les Vegas

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

TISWAS is the only correct answer.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

I vote for whatever Trevor & Simon were on.

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

(answer: possibly acid)

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck me, Parallell 9 - I remember the Shamen playing on that.

"8:15 from Manchester" being fairly well clued up, with the Inspiral Carpets, Beats International and St Etienne getting played quite a lot.

to be fair, the inspiral carpets were played every episode, as the theme tune

I remember the awkardly titled "8:15 from Manchester" being fairly well clued up, with the Inspiral Carpets, Beats International and St Etienne getting played quite a lot.

The Inspiral Carpets did the theme tune for it. Where is the nu-rave Sat morn show eh?

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

yeah. i remember a segment where clint boon showed you how he worked his two-tier hammond organ thingy. and an interview with the black guy out of beats international, norman cook preferring to sulk around behind lindy layton back then.

the next grozart, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspiral_Carpets it was "find out why"

Alan, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'll only base my answer on what cartoons each programme would show.

So whoever showed Dungeons and Dragons=winner.
Also WACADAY gets a mention for Transformers
Get Fresh classic for The Centurions.

actually fuck that,
Going Live, just for Gordon the Gopher.

Ste, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

N.73 was rubbish

Ste, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

two not mentioned (for good reason really):

UP2U (ft. TOTP presenters Anthea Turner and iirc Tony Dortie)
Get Fresh (ft. Gilbert the ali-hen)

On The Waterfront = under-rated (Flashing Blade, Lantern Jaw, taking the piss out Bernie Nolan, that one time Vic & Bob were on and Ross Thingy inviting viewers to win whatever was on the end of The Man With The Stick's helmet...)

blueski, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

Saturday Superstore is also missing from the list, but it too was pretty rubbish.

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

gilbert the alien sang a song about hitchin apparently, although i don't remember it.

the next grozart, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

ah SS, yes with Mike Read. I actually enjoyed that one.

xp, "how far to Hitchin, it's Hitchin I'm missin"
I remember it well.

Ste, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Gilbert the Alien >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gordon the Gopher

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

anyone remember Charles Golding's 'What's News?' on mid-80s Sunday morning ITV?

blueski, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

i liked No73 a lot

Alan, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

Did Roots Manuva nick "swing your pants!" from Trevor and Simon?

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Trevor and Simon = CLASSIC before they realised adults were watching. DUD thereafter. In fact, careers over.

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

"Where is the nu-rave Sat morn show eh?"

where is ANY sat morn show? nu-rave cookery, more like

Alan, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Regional disaster The Untied Shoelaces Show:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/aboutus/wirelesstoweb/decades/clip_display.shtml?decade=80s&clip_name=untied_shoelaces&size=v&media_type=video

This 58 second clip manages to illustrate exactly how bad it was.

onimo, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

It's fondly remembered by millions of grown-ups who want to reclaim their summer childhood mornings!

LIES

onimo, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

TISWAS - "This is what they want!!!"
Swap Shop was your boring uncle by comparison.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

http://bp1.blogger.com/_AzT5pruwnbg/Rn5YaDqdzTI/AAAAAAAABec/6Vn0fMyFndY/s400/selling+bob+1988.BMP
Indupitably the greatest moment in kids' tv ever: Gilbert meets Dieter Meier. (More than even I remembered here: http://80sactual.blogspot.com/2005/05/gilberts-fridge.html)

Stevie T, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, oh wow, I wish I'd seen that!

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I hated TISWAS (and all other ITV). I vote Saturday Superstore because of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCdhMN1ZCO8 (winner of Saturday Superstore Search for a Superstar).

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

ITV ruled Sat'day mornings. Always did.

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Some old bloke (possibly John Gorman) smashing himself over the head with a tin tray whilst singing "Mule Train" + clips from Kentucky Fried Movie and various Kung Fu flicks = every other kids programme ever can F right off.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

We always watched the BBC shows in my house. Never saw Tiswas, only Swap Shop. The only thing I watched on ITV Saturday mornings was The Chart Show.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

That's tantamount to child abuse.... hey "tantamount", what a great word!

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Regional disaster The Untied Shoelaces Show

ha, i was an audience member for that once, all i can remember is that peter powell was the special guest. big woo.

zappi, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Swap Shop = Noel Edmonds & John Craven = LOL

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Although The Mersey Pirate with Cap'n Duggie Brown was pretty unbelievable.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

BBC = Grandstand, Frank Bough, David Coleman, Bob Wilson, fucking Showjumping from Hickstead

ITV = World of Sport, Dickie Davies, WRESTLING

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Testify brotha

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

but ITV also = Saint & Greavsies terrible football shows

zappi, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

BBC = athletics and skiing and rugby special ergo winner!

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dickie Davies = underrated pimp

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Though that is pm (x-post)

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Where is the love for Shirley Crabtree?

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Athletics + Skiing + Rugby Union = I am on the other side with Big Daddy giving it Ee-zeh! Ee-zeh! Ee-zeh!

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

Also, speedway amirite?

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

If I remember right then World of Sport was where I saw my first American Football too.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

BBC = athletics and skiing and rugby special ergo SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Except for Eddie Waring.

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

But Seb and Steve and Fatima and Franz and Pirmin!

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

OK OK I AM A SQUARE

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Not 'alf

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Waring is hated in Hull, the biased git.

xpost I only like Ovett out of them guys. Cheering for Seb Coe felt like cheering for Thatcher, even back then.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think playing the Seb card is going to win Tom over somehow. x-post

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Graeme Garden doing Eddie Waring is awesome forever tho.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot to mention Brendan Foster, what a wanker!

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Ovett vs Coe always felt like real life Alf Tupper vs Randolph Twistleton-Featherstonehaugh.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

(ahem, David Icke, ahem)

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

What was wrong with Saint and Crosby?

TTTTTTT, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

Final Score more authoritative on BBC tho.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

More fun on ITV tho. More reports. Gerald Sinstadt reporting from Carrow Road. John Helm reporting from Vicarage Road etc etc

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

every saint & drunky episode
drunky : wassat allabout eh pal?
st : HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA ha ha ha ha ha ha (five minutes later) ha ha ha .... you kill me greavsie

zappi, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Final Score more authoritative on BBC tho.

Definately - the Vidiprinter made it feel like you were right there in the studio. I didn't follow football but I'd still watch Final Score.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Teleprinter when I first remember it. Still ought to be on, making that type-y noise.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

I remember it as the miniprinter. Did anyone else race the man to the bottom of the scores? I must have driven Dad nuts.

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also: shut your eyes and predict the second score by his tone of voice.

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

I still get sick listening to Wolves lose on the radio like that.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

More fun on ITV tho. More reports. Gerald Sinstadt reporting from Carrow Road. John Helm reporting from Vicarage Road etc etc

Stuart Hall's reports were good fun too though!

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hehe, I just realised Ovett is also a Steve - I had the handsome Cram in mind when I typed that.

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Also: shut your eyes and predict the second score by his tone of voice.

Forfar five... Fife...

NickB, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Cram, ugh, Brendan Foster's mini-me, can't abide him either

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Forfar five... Fife...

Listening to the Scottish team names and wondering where all these places were... Motherwell, Queen of the South, etc., etc..

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

Stuart Hall's reports were good fun too though!

Stuart Halls insanity reports are still fun on Five Live

zappi, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

He's a bit of a self-parody these days tho. Still has his moments.

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I figure he's overdoing it a bit lately.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

He was always so understated in the past......................

Tom D., Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)
