stet, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Fck it - up to 60 dead now according to some.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Rivers said there was remarkably little security near the motorcade considering the sizable security risk Bhutto presents. Bhutto's return angered some sectors in Pakistan because she was a female head of state who is perceived as being aligned with the United States.

"We remarked on how lax security was around her," Rivers told Blitzer after the explosions. "We got within touching distance of her vehicle. There was no security around, nobody stopping vehicles getting close to [the motorcade]."

omar little, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's pretty late over there so he could well be in bed anyway.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

LOL

chaki, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

This is pretty fucked up, I just mentioned it to my pakistani coworker, although I have no idea how interested he is. NPR's been covering her negotiations and return to the country for the past few months so I'd imagine I'll be hearing a lot more about it on my drive to work tomorrow...

mh, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

AP reporting 108 dead.

gr8080, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

i honestly hope heavo ho is ok

chaki, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Speak, Heave.

W4LTER, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

jergïns, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

i was talking to him the other night and didn't get the feeling from him that he'd be close to all the commotion once she landed, but who knows....

gr8080, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit that article. Too horrible to even imagine.

Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

jeez that photo

omar little, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

the fundies waiting in the wings in Pakistan make the Taliban look middle-of-the road.

dally, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Aren't they pretty much the same people?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

BBC report at least 125 dead.

I trust, and hope, that Heave Ho is alright.

Matt, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

xpost yeah, not really sure what dally means there.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

He's just trolling a thread where people are expressing heartfelt concern for a poster's well-being.

dan m, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

omg watching footage on lou dobbs right now.

awful.

gr8080, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

It's germane to the discussion, though. I wasn't aware that there was much of a distinction between Taliban and Pashtun militants. Or if there is. There'll be some blurring, surely, the Taliban aren't an ethnic/tribal grouping, so presumably some of them are Pashtun, or am I wrong?

xp

Matt, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

No I'm not, I was referring to the Jamiat-e Ulema Islam party, which supports the Taliban but is also even more right-wing. Things are going to get very even worse there in the coming months.

dally, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

They also enjoy a lot more popular support than the Taliban ever did.

dally, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

I know The Heave Ho has been going through some problems, what with being sent to the sin bin during 1p3 ROCKTOBER but I hope he hasn't resorted to suicide bombing to protest the actions of other authority figures (with whom I disagree with)!!

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

man this is depressing

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

guys, as many as 20 million people live in karachi

gabbneb, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

But only *one* Heave Ho!!

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

12.3 million

also, london

also, Heave Ho seems pretty nonpolotical to me (see the answers on Ask Heave Ho ). that could be a good thing

jergïns, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

i was not aware that heave ho lived in karachi.

gbx, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Check-in soon, HH.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

be safe, hh. we <3 you.

lxy, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

is also even more right-wing

this is horseshit. there are certainly theological differences, but it makes no sense to distinguish between the two based on how far to the right they are.

horseshoe, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

124 dead, 320 injured.

gr8080, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

(Use of the right/left notion is part of what you're already objecting to, right, Horseshoe?)

nabisco, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'm ok - Thanks for your concern!

Heave Ho, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

sanskrit, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

keep your head up HH

elan, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

(Use of the right/left notion is part of what you're already objecting to, right, Horseshoe?)

actually, I was confused about dally's terms (as was no doubt intended). there's basically no ideological difference between JUI and the Taliban as it ruled in Afghanistan, as Noodle Vague said above. they both originate in the same interpretation of Islam. and characterizing them as right-wing seems sort of inadequate, yeah.

horseshoe, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, thanks for caring. I'm/we're okay. Yesterday was a very busy day. When my girlfriend walked in the door at 4:30 I gave her the biggest hug and we spent most of the night calling everyone to make sure they were ok or to tell them we were ok and we got very drunk. It didn't seem right to be drinking, but it sure was better than watching the damn buildings falling down on endless repeat all night.
She had to walk over the 59th street bridge with a crowd of people. Totally bizarre. She was exhausted.

Does Bush seem angry to you? He seems confused to me. This isn't the reaction I was hoping for.

gershy, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

gershy do you ever have anything to say outside of your own cut-up metalanguage or are you just like that guy Dada from a couple years ago who could only communicate in google image search results

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

Dada thread revives in 3... 2...

gr8080, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

Heave Ho knows I care

gershy, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

you know it's really nothing against whoever gershy is but I just think I am biased towards posters I can at least imagine having a straighforward conversation with on a topic

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

i used to be a fairly "straight" poster, people still called me asshole all the time so I stopped taking any of this seriously and just tried to amuse myself..... sorry if it bugs ya

gershy, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

it's the internet

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

of course it bugs me

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)

Glad you're okay HH

Noodle Vague, Friday, 19 October 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Bhutto reported dead

gabbneb, Thursday, 27 December 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

Let's hope he dies in this one!

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 27 December 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

BBC News now reporting Bhutto has been killed, though also saying that's just one report and that other reports have her injured but alive.

ailsa, Thursday, 27 December 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

...by a member of her own security detail, apparently.

Heave Ho?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 27 December 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

this thread is sorta embarrassing
