s. morris, Friday, 19 October 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

I wish they included a google map marker so I could avoid the area

Don you're setting yourself up for some classic strikethrough action there

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I would be happy to refill your glass with some whisky, friend.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

Don't worry, I was planning on leaving my kids at home for this bender.

That article was unintentionally hilarious, BTW.

Dandy Don Weiner, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

I totally get that only one person has been caught re-offending, totally think this country could use more rehab and fewer scarlet letters, but I still think it would be nice to let new people renting know that 50% of their neighbors are sexual offenders (though it sounds like they must not allow families to set up camp there).

I agree with this - I'm pretty fierce on civil liberties generally, but I spent ten-plus years working with children, and that colors my opinions on this stuff. I mean: I have personally worked with adults who'd crossed that line, been horrified with themselves, wanted to fix themselves. But the prevailing logic among professionals remains: you're gonna want what you're gonna want, and removing the stimulus is the only sure way to extinguish a behavior.

However, all this is boring. "Trailer Park Is Sex Offender Haven." Come on, now.

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

Headline I'm getting is "Trailer park becomes 'paradise' for sex offenders" which is even more awesome, imo.

Royals To Get A Taste Of Angels' Colon

da croupier, Friday, 19 October 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

It seems like if it's an adults-only community, and the owner is very purposefully using it as a sort of halfway house for sex offenders to readjust to society (in an environment where they're both not stigmatized/isolated and kind under watch!), you'd think she MUST be doing some level of notification, even if it's in a circumspect way.

nabisco, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it does seem like there's a whole story to be told here of somebody who 1), on the cynical side of things, saw a market that would come to her & be loyal customers, and, 2), on the hopeful side of things, realized that there was a class of people who even the would-be Mother Theresas of the world weren't willing to reach out to, and said "well, what the hell, if I go adults only, why shouldn't these people live here"

which is pretty right on: dudes are fucked up, you can loathe them for their actions if you like but it's seldom the case (not never, though) that they chose to be monsters, some ridiculous percentage of them suffered utterly dehumanizing abuse when they were very young and that's how they became what they are: it's lovely that there are human beings who can find it within themselves to look past the revulsion and toward giving such people, may God keep them far away from all children, a place to live in peace

however

"Trailer Park Becomes 'Paradise' For Sex Offenders"

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

yes yes and yeslol

estela, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm willing to concede that this trailer park is probably pretty okay safety-wise, but "'paradise' for sex offenders"? Wouldn't that involve at least a few kids?

Royals To Get A Taste Of Angels' Colon

one thing I love about this is how basically ANY verb would be hysterical, "Royals face Angels' Colon" "Royals take on Angels' Colon" "Royals get ready for Angels' Colon" but this writer could not resist mining for gold.

da croupier, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

postgame headline was what? 'royals get blasted by angels' colon'? 'angels' colon dumps on royals'?

Serial Stabbing Suspect a 'Gentle Giant,' But With Alleged History of Violence

in fairness the article does state that it's a 'complex' situation

the feel totally is Pythonesque - "He was a gentle giant. Of course there was all that bit with the serial stabbings, but leaving that aside, he was a gentle giant"
