When I was about 10 or 11 I got really into Punch. Our town library had back issues upstairs in the reference library and I'd spend hours up there reading them. Then I'd borrow Pick of Punch anthologies to take home. Obviously I read all the cartoons, but of the articles my favourites were always the ones by Alan Coren. For a couple of years there I thought he was the funniest motherfucker alive. He had that silliness that reminded me of the Goodies books my mate lent me. He made me lol a lot.

Now my opinion of AC changed down the years, but I've always got love for him cos I remember how much he made me laugh before I became a cynical old man.

I always thought he was the funniest and most engaging of all the people they have on those Radio 4 comedy shows.

Was Coren part of the Private Eye/ That Was The Week That Was bunch? He'd have been about the right age...

Not to my knowledge. Probably for reasons of politics.

Like Noodle Vague I was really into Punch for a while. Coren was Editor from 1978 to 1987 - how rapidly it went downhill after that! Classic for Punch, his R4 contributions and his books. But I agree with Dom that it was a shame he ever bred.

Why can this not be about Anna Coren? Please. I'll pay anything.

one year passes...

I bought a secondhand book yesterday (Dylan Thomas 'Adventures In The Skin Trade') and have just noticed the name on the flyleaf - Alan Coren, Wadham, Oxford, 1961. I am quite thrilled by this.
