I must say my go-to is always Bombay Saph, even though I know there are better gins to be had.

Trayce, Thursday, 1 November 2007 05:25 (sixteen years ago) link

tanqueray #10

electricsound, Thursday, 1 November 2007 05:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i like a tanq 10
i really want to try old raj but it's like $60
hendrick's is all the rage these days with my alkie friends

gershy, Thursday, 1 November 2007 05:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to drink beefeater as a youngun :( No wonder gin made me hurl.

Trayce, Thursday, 1 November 2007 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

bombay w/tonic, bombay sapphire in martini

currently working a bottle of plymouth 1793, it's good, verrrry smooth

hendrick's is weird but good, almost like cucumber-flavored vodka

m coleman, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:01 (sixteen years ago) link

that sounds awesome.

gr8080, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

No Blackwood's, no credibility.

What strength of Plymouth are we talking about here, regular or Navy Strength? Also, the Plymouth Gin Distillery has a very nice bar, even if the bistro isn't that hot.

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:28 (sixteen years ago) link

i get tanqueray when i'm feeling ritzy. would love to try hendrick's. right now it's whatever's on tap.

strgn, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:31 (sixteen years ago) link

uh well. if only gin were on tap

strgn, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, what does "go to" mean in this context - the one you'll drink in a normal pub, the one you'll use as a bog-standard easy drinking gin, the one in a bar with a decent gin selection, the one when you fancy an unmixed gin, the one for cocktails...

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 10:56 (sixteen years ago) link

tossup for me between tanqueray and hendrick's, this is all the "decent gin selection" you need

bombay sapphire is garbage, sorry

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2007 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Hendrick's

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 1 November 2007 11:15 (sixteen years ago) link

bombay sapphire is garbage

This, I can get behind. I tried some again at the weekend, bleh.

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 11:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I convinced my sis-in-law to buy the Rangpur Tanqueray and...it's kind of a disappointment. I felt bad but she had never had Tanqueray 'regular' and was into it.

Gin is SO. GOOD.

Went for Hendricks, of course.

Ed, Thursday, 1 November 2007 13:48 (sixteen years ago) link

For Martinis: Bombay

For G&Ts: Tanqueray, 209, Plymouth, Hendricks, whatever's available.

Hendricks in a walk.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Gordon's Export is nice

C J, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Tell me why Bombay Sapphire is bad, and what I might like better. That's what I usually drink, but that's pretty much just habit and I am willing to branch out and try something new and different. My favorite gin drinks are martinis and gin rickies (gin, club soda, splash of lime juice).

Jenny, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

hendricks is going to win anyway so I voted for rangpur, the only tanqueray that isn't shit

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

a gin rickey, that's what I've been drinking all this time! I had no idea, I just thought I was weird for hating tonic.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Tanqueray is gorgeous!!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

hendricks is nice but overpriced for what it is. I mean it's fucking gin people, gin does not cost $40 for a 750.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Tracer you and I are going to have to agree to disagree on this subject, I like a sapphire martini and think that one of the ingredients in regular tanqueray is probably old men's piss

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Bombay Sapphire is too 'hot' for me, Jenny.

CJ's right about the Gordon's Export, too.

Michael White, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

tanqueray and tonic is sincerely one of the nastiest ways to get drunk I have ever subjected myself to (after tanqueray and milk)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Too much tonic - aim for around 2 parts gin to 3 parts tonic.

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom that's called "organic filtration" now, get with the times

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Bombay Sapphire has always seemed like a gimmick gin. Like the Grey Goose of gin. I bet it's not even made with real sapphires.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:03 (sixteen years ago) link

we should be able to add a bonus question for twist vs olives
personally I believe olives belong in vodka drinks bcz proper wadka tastes like the null set
a twist is all a good gin should require/tolerate

El Tomboto, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I could agree with that.

aldo, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I do like a twist, Tom, but good cocktail onions in a gibson are delicious and the best is not even olives at all:

Michael White, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Hate a twist, it makes the gin taste almost refreshing

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:13 (sixteen years ago) link

bombay/bombay sapphire is bad and expensive, i don't understand the appeal

i'll go w. tanq & booths for drinking and gilbeys for mixing

remy bean, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

seagrams isn't ass-terrible either.

remy bean, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm out of gin :(
whiskey to the rescue

gershy, Friday, 2 November 2007 02:51 (sixteen years ago) link

gin is def. my drink of choice. i am partial to gin + home-made ginger/sugar syrup w. tonic.

remy bean, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:04 (sixteen years ago) link

hendricks is nice but overpriced for what it is. I mean it's fucking gin people, gin does not cost $40 for a 750.

It's $25 at Trader Joe's. I like it 'cause it's the least ginny of the few I've had (not a fan of the juniper berry).

nickn, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

trader joe's is a fucking godsend for lushes like me who want the topshelf stuff at semi-reasonable prices

gershy, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I like Hendrick's, but it's definitely the non-gin drinker's gin of choice.

Plymouth is my go to for mixing, but I also use Beefeater, Bombay, Boodles and Bookers. For sipping on the rocks or neat I go with Junipero, Old Raj, or Hendricks.

Miller's Westbourne Strength makes the best martini I've ever had, but it's very hard to find retail around here.

Has anyone tried Bluecoat? It's a new gin out of Philly that I've heard nothing but raves about.

I picked up some really odd cask aged genevers in Amsterdam this summer, I'd never guess they were gin-related from a blind tasting.

I DIED, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't really like gin. perhaps i'll try this hendricks.

gabbneb, Friday, 2 November 2007 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

(xpost) whoops, I meant Brokers, not Bookers.

I DIED, Friday, 2 November 2007 04:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Tanqueray. Oh yeah.

SeekAltRoute, Sunday, 4 November 2007 01:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I am as unschooled in the ways of gin as most guys. I drink Sapphire when I drink it at all. A while back, I liked Tanqueray Malacca, which has apparently been discontinued.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 4 November 2007 01:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I am working my way through a bottle of Blackwood's at the moment and it is truely the greatest gin I've ever had. In its absence, I go for Tanqueray.

Hendrick's

My uncle used to favor gin in a bottle that was a straight tube (not contoured) and fluted on the outside (like cardboard turned inside out). Can't remember what it was called but it was hard to get in Bergen Cty, NJ, apparently.

Adnams gin is very nice. They have two gins - I actually prefer the one that wasn't declared the best gin in the world.
